What's it like being an account coordinator at a PR firm? I've read some job profiles online, but I'd like to hear personal experiences. What's the day-to-day work like, and what sort of person would be good for the job? I see there's a past question that touches on being an account exec, but this is the rung below, right?

My employer is impressed enough with my work that they want to promote me into a position which would ordinarily make for a great career move. I, however, am planning on leaving in a little over a year to earn a degree in a completely different field, and thus have no interest in the job (for reasons explained after the jump.) How do I diplomatically tell them no without jeopardizing my current position, and how much, if any, of my future plans do I mention to them? [more inside]

A local vocational school is offering a 15-week program to train students to become independent insurance adjusters and hopefully pass the Texas All Lines Adjuster exam. I'm sure the 15-week training program is insanely expensive, but supposedly the independent insurance adjuster gig is considered pretty lucrative--especially for someone like me without a college degree. Anyone have any advice for someone stuck in dead end job and considering plunking down the money and time to become an independent insurance adjuster? Can a guy make a living as licensed independent insurance adjuster?

I'm happy at the tech company I work for but am increasingly concerned about my career progression. Nearly a year ago, I took on new role as a project manager, moving from a role with a mix of development and client technical liaison/consulting. My company is currently strongly encouraging me to take on even more of a project management role. I think I'd rather move towards working as a technical lead, I'm concerned that getting myself too far removed from technical work now could make it too difficult to move back later. I could really use some advice from Metafilter-ites with experience in tech firms and technical project management! [more inside]

I've been at my tiny non-profit for over three years. Last summer I got a new boss who's changed the workplace from a fairly egalitarian, self-managed environment to an autocratic, micro-managed one. For instance, I used to have a modicum of creative control over the media and newsletter I produced and now I have none. Folks keep saying I should talk to her but she's very dominant and she informed me the first week she came on the job that she's a micro-manager. I'm not paid well enough to stay if I'm not enjoying myself, but I am highly invested in the people we serve and keep imagining that maybe I'll adjust and she'll chill and we'll be able to go back to "the way it was". Am I hoping against hope? Anyone been to the other side?

WorkingInMiddleEastFilter: So ive been offered a job in Afghanistan at one of the FOB's (Forward Operating Base) there but i know little to nothing about working over there. The money is great however and my family could use the $ to help pay off some bills. The contract is 4month on 2 weeks off. They stress that it is very dangerous work, and just to clarify i will be doing IT work. I have a wife and two small children, 6 and 2 so i have to weigh in what it would be like to leave them for this time also. Can anyone offer any insight to what it may be like? Is it really that dangerous? Anyone with first hand experience?
