The eternal curse of the career changer

Hiring managers of MeFi: say you're looking at the resume or cover letter of a candidate who is a mid-life (or later) career changer. They are attempting to come into your field with much professional experience in a totally unrelated career, but little-to-no professional, paying experience in your field. Are there things about them that would make you run screaming? Things that would make you go "hmmmm...maybe..."? [more inside]

Resume/Job Search Question #1001

In May, I will be graduating with a master's degree in applied anthropology. I'll be meeting a potential employer this week (possibly tomorrow) at a 3-day long design/innovation bootcamp. How and when do I broach the subject of employment and ask to send him my resume? Bonus job search questions abound! [more inside]

Career Crisis- How to get hired after only 2 months at current job?

Hello, Metafilter! Long time lurker (10 years), first time poster. To sum it up- after a failed stint as an AmeriCorps VISTA (6 months) following graduation from the University of South Carolina with a degree in International Studies and a minor in Economics- I have spent a year unemployed, a year as a bank teller, another year unemployed, and over a year as a server and a tax season as a tax pro at H&R block. I went back to school during the time as a server to get enough credits to sit for the CPA (one computer apps class away from obtaining accounting certificate at a local community college). Moved back to SC and spent from 07/12-06/13 as an Assistant Service Manager at a car dealership (hated it because A, I have asthma and missed a ton of work due to complications from working outside, B, I knew nothing about cars, and C, I am not a fan of Customer Service/commission pay). How can I make my work experience relevant for a job in academia?

I am in need of some help... I've just completed an M.A. in Anthropology, I'm trying to pull together a CV for a job teaching as an adjunct professor or community college professor. I don't have professional teaching experience, even though I've got loads of experience teaching to my peers in graduate seminars. (I'm also not sure how to convey that, other than in a cover letter.) I've got some of my written work (Academia.edu), and one of my presentations on YouTube. I'm in the process of revising some other papers to put on Academia.edu... Hoping, I suppose, that displaying my work will make me a better candidate. Now, here's the question: How can I make my existing (non-teaching!) work experience relevant to applying for academic jobs? [more inside]

6 Month Old Promotion Never Finalized Before Layoffs

I accepted a new position at my company with the caveat that it would take a significant amount of time to have the new position, and significant promotion, finalized by HR. It is in the same department as my previous position, but with a new direct boss (I work for a VP now, rather than a manager). I’ve excelled, despite the significantly higher amount of work, responsibility, and visibility to the higher-ups in the rest of the company. However, company wide layoffs (~90% of my building) were announced to occur at the end of the summer, and now I’m at a loss how to depict this on my resume. [more inside]

How Can I Help My Mom Help Herself?

Hey Mefites, here's my question: My younger sister, mother, and I suffered years of abuse at the hands of an alcoholic stepfather - physical, verbal, etc. When we were younger, my sister and I were absolutely focused on getting the fuck out and did, getting scholarships to great schools, thankfully. My mom, not so much. She is no longer in a relationship with him, but they have been living together for economic reasons - she needs his disability paycheck to pay the bills (all of which are in her name, including the mortgage payment.) Downshifting: the sequel part III

Pursuant to two earlier questions today regarding how to get jobs one is overqualified for, I was wondering about taking degrees and job titles off of my resume. Isn't that unethical? Resume help!

I've had the same job for the past 6 years. In that time, my job title has changed 3 times, my department has been involved in four major reorgs and been moved all over the company, my department name has changed 5 times, and I've reported to 4 different people. Throughout all that, the actual job I've been doing has remained the same. How do I indicate that on a resume for an internal position in another department?

Resume Ideas

Where can I find great examples of resumes / cv's? I will be pursuing a new job in the next 6 months and would like to polish up my resume now. I think my resume is pretty good, but I would like to look at some different approaches to brainstorm how I may tighten it up. I am a I.T. project manager if that helps. My Google-Fu is turning up sites with resumes templates that are, ummmm, a lot worse than my existing resume. Any general tips would be much appreciated as well, but I am more interested in format, structure, and wording. Help me find example resumes that jump off a recruiter's desk!
