Recommend a graphics card for my new TV

Do I need a new video card to hook my PC up to my new HDTV? I have a Dell PC with a ATI Radeon HD 2400 graphics card. It has two connections, one DVI and one S-Video.

I used to convert the DVI to RGB and connect that to my Dell monitor at the max resolution of 1680 x 1050. The S-Video was connected to my tube TV, which worked just fine.

The new TV is a Toshiba 40" 1080p, so of course I'd like to feed it something better than S-Video. I tried connecting the RGB, which gives me a max resolution of 1360x768 -- but it leaves me with S-Video for the monitor, which is pretty freakin' ugly.

Here's the question: is there a way I can use a splitter or similar to feed the DVI (or RGB) into both the monitor and the TV at a resolution both will be happy with? Or do I have to get a new HDMI-ready graphics card? If I do, can you recommend one that might last me little while without breaking the bank? Under $100 would be great. I play the occasional game of TF2 but media is going to be the main use. Blu-Ray might be nice one day. I don't need to expand to a second monitor and would be just as happy cloning the same image on both screens. Thanks much.

Here's the deal. I need to use my credit card to get an additional 850 miles QUICKLY to buy an airline ticket. That means, in my card's scenario, that I need to spend $850 (1 point/$spent). However, I don't want to buy anything. I have heard of some place where you can buy coins, I think it was silver dollars, for a very small premium, and you could use a credit card. This would be the perfect solution because I'm using my credit card to buy negotiable currency. Anyone familiar with this, or can offer another alternative for me to build miles without having to get 'goods'?

recovering photos from a gnawed-upon SD card

Are there any services (preferably in Canada) that will attempt to get data from a damaged SD card? A friend has baby pictures on an SD card, which said baby later found and used as an inappropriate teething aid. The card doesn't show up on any computer/card reader, though most card readers do accept it.

I've tried RescuePro, PhotoRec and PhotoRescue, all on Mac. None of them even see the volume.

Looking for cutesy little puns of the kids' valentine variety. I would like to make a series of love notes for my guy in the style of those lame valentine's cards we all got as kids. I plan to draw a little picture to go with each note, so short and simple is best.

Obvious ones:
"I choo-choo-choose you" (thanks, Ralph Wiggum!) with a picture of a train.
"Bee mine" with, you know, a bee.
"You're my sweetie" with a candy or something.

I would love to hear some suggestions that are more creative, clever, and have better puns. Any ideas?

Where do I find a high quality card to congratulate my friends on their engagement?

Please help me find a nice place to buy high quality stationery--either in Boston or online--so that I can congratulate two close friends on their engagement. I'd like to send them a card of higher-than-Hallmark quality. As a young man I'm unfortunately at a bit of a loss for how one goes about finding such things. I was hoping there was some paper maven out there.

They are both well-educated and possess relatively refined taste (e.g. they go see opera, ballet, etc.), so I'd like something that is a bit "impressive," for lack of a better word. (For example, can you buy gold leaf cards?) They're both Renaissance scholars, so something a touch old-fashioned might go over well.

Thanks in advance for any ideas! Also feel free to point out any points of protocol I might be missing, as I'm not that experienced with weddings.

My baby shower was two months ago and I still haven't sent the thank you cards. My baby is now a month old. Can I send out the thank you cards and the birth announcements together, or is that horribly tacky? I feel terrible about sending the thank you cards so late, but I've never written a thank you card before (Yes, I'm awful.) so I procrastinated out of intimidation. Now that I'm finally feeling normal enough to actually get around to it, it's time to also send out the birth announcements. Can I send out cards that both thank and announce? Or put two cards in the same envelope? Or should I mail them separately, even if they're sent out on the same day?

Bonus Question: Do I apologize for mailing them so late when writing the thank you note?

Need inappropriate office party behaviors

For Christmas Card art--what are some inappropriate workplace party behaviors that can be portrayed in a single drawing? I'm working on having an artist do our company annual Christmas card, and this year we're doing a Far Side-ish cartoon of an inappropriate office party. For example, there will be someone Xeroxing their behind, and some people making out in the office supplies closet.

What other types of activities can be/should be included here? The funnier the better. But it can't be too involved, a single frame of someone "in the act" needs to convey the whole bit. But our artist is very very good, so if you have ideas, please post them and he might be able to make them work.

What to do with blank SIM cards?

I have about 30 surplus SIM cards, all for AT&T. They are new and unused SIM cards. Is there any life for new SIM cards with no account on them? I routinely have piles of these unused SIM cards as a result of my job, about 30 to 50 a month. The reason is due to the fact that whenever we upgrade a phone, they send us the new phone with a new SIM included. Not wanting to deal with transferring accounts from SIM to SIM, the current user simply moves their old SIM and keeps their number, and we're left with unused, new SIM cards as well as the matching plastic cards that they've been punched out of.

The waste not want not person inside of me feels that there should be some way to put these to use, either by reselling them or donating them or doing something useful with them, other than throwing them out. Help?

Each year our company sends our customers holiday gifts as well as a calendar (we use employee photos for the calendar). The gift we want to send this year is a 7-inch digital photo frame. We'd like to pre-load an SD card with past calendar photos - for display on the photo frame. I would like to purchase (at lowest cost of course) 200-300 1 GB SD cards. I prefer no retail packaging (we'd just have to spend time tearing into that stupid theft-proof plastic). I've been googling around, and haven't found a good way to purchase SD cards this way. I've tried Alibaba, but can't really make head nor tail out of what I'd be getting. The quantity and zero packaging requirements seem like it should result in a low price if I can find the right supplier.

Any thoughts?

How do you play card game: Bomb City

A couple sitting next to me on a plane were playing a fast two person card game that looked fun. I asked what it was called and they told me it was "Bomb City". Possibly I heard the name wrong. I figured I could easily look it up online and get the rules. No such luck. Does anyone know the rules for "Bomb City"? It was a two person game ( possibly more - I dont' know ), played with a deck of standard playing cards including jokers. I think each person started with three piles of two cards in front of them with the top one frace up. Each game seemed to take 5 or 10 minutes. Thanks in advance. - Dave

How do I get my life on track with high debt and a chronic medical condition? So i'm 26 years old and have been completely on my own since i was 18. I come from a working class family who lives in a small dying town with no jobs. I knew if I was going to make something of my life in any way, I had to get out of there. Being so young and inexperienced, it's not like I could get a well paying job to support myself. And it's not like my family had any money to give me.
So 5 years ago, I took out many many loans and used that money to move myself across the country to " the big (and expensive) city" to attend college and hopefully start a new life there.

I also used the student loan money to pay for everything I would need to live on (mainly rent because the dorms were more expensive than studio apts, food, and school supplies) and even then it still wasn't enough, so I also worked full time in addition to going to school full time, just to make ends meet.

On top of this, to make matters more complicated, I also have a chronic medical condition. I have had it mildly since I was 10, but never had it addressed, or even diagnosed as to what it was, since my family lacked health insurance.

It was still fairly mild even when I moved here, but through the years got much more serious and I am now in constant daily pain and have some serious breathing issues. I tried to get health insurance on my own, but no plan would cover me due to the pre-existing condition. So I had no choice but to pay out of pocket for all medical expenses. Of course I had no out of pocket money to spare, so I used credit cards to pay all my medical bills.

And I never had enough credit to pay for anything medical that would truly diagnose me, so I resorted to many expensive pain management treatments only to be left with my condition progressively getting worse.

Now flash to present day, 5 years later, and I am $60,000 in debt from school, $10,000 from credit card debt. The job market is scarce and no one is hiring on staff. I've been taking very low pay freelance gigs which don't even amount to half of my expenses.

Currently, my bare minimum expenses amount to $1150 per month.

One of them being a health plan I pay 400 a month for after puting myself on a long waiting list for a government health plan that teams with private insurers to give coverage to high risk people. With this plan I was also able to finally get the tests I needed to diagnose me, only to discover (upon confirmation of 6 different doctor opinions to be sure) that I need a surgery that will cost a minimum of $30,000 depending on where I get it done, while knowing full well my insurance plan will most likely not cover because it is not a common surgery, though results are typically favorable.

I also pay 400 a month to see a physical therapist who I have been seeing for a year and a half and is the only source of pain relief I have found to help me (Insurance only covers 25% of 12 sessions a year, which I have already maxed out) Then pay 300 a month for my credit cards and 50 for my cell phone. And every 3 months, pay 150 forbearance fee for my student loans. That is it.

I had to leave my apartment and move in with a friend who is letting me stay there rent free until I figure something out. They are also fortunate enough to make a decent living and have been loaning me money to help pay my bills, eat their food, and use their computer. If anything, they've almost become my surrogate parent and it makes me feel like shit for puting them in that position, but I simply don't know what else to do.

I would get a second job anywhere I could find, but not only have those jobs even been hard to come by, but my health simply won't allow it at this point. I am extremely distressed, depressed, and hopeless. The biggest issues of all is the health and everything else seems to stem from it to make all the other problems worse. I don't know how much more bare minimum I can get in terms of cutting my budget when I'm already miserable and in so much pain.

I have considered going on disability, but I don't know if I would count since I still have been able to work, so long as the work isn't strenuous and I don't have to be on my feet all day.

I've considered welfare and bankruptcy but I'm not too sure how they work or if I would have to give up making enough money to pay for everything I need just to qualify. Or if bankruptcy will just ruin my credit enough to never be able to rent again.

I want to be responsible and make the best choice that will benefit me in the long run, but I don't know what that is or where to go. I really need some advice or clarity on this, so anything anyone has to say, please I'd love to hear it. Thank you.

How to negotiate with a credit card company? Hi, I had some excellent response to a previous question and this is a follow up from that.

I got the recommend book in that thread from Nolo, and I have read most parts of it by now: Solve Your Money Troubles: Debt, Credit & Bankruptcy

Short recap, I recently divorced, ended up with a lot of the credit card dept. I am making minimum payments (barely) and I am not behind, but I am not making any progress on the actual money owed

I cannot get equity out of the mortgage I am upside down in.

Now the book, talks about (briefly) negotiating a lower interest rate, lower the principal and such with your credit card companies.

The problem is I am not very good at negotiations, and I have never attempted it before. How does the conversation go?
What are some of the points to hammer on while talking to the credit card company? What is the credit card companies benefit from making concessions to me? Is there a specific department to ask for?

Has anyone in the hive mind done this procedure successfully?

Any advice, would be great.

Financial filter: I recently received a very fancy mailing from a company in Florida (Trascendental Lending), offering me (due to new government regulations) to consolidate my credit card dept (35K) to a new 5% loan, with much lower payments. This sounds too good to be true so I presume it is? I am recently divorced, and I am having trouble getting the financial ends to meet. I got most of the credit card dept after the divorce.
I am barely able to make minimum payments as it is. All accounts are current though, and I have no late payments.

So one day I got fancy letter from some company in Florida called Trascendental Lending or something close to it, offering to consolidate my credit card dept, allegedly based on some new government program, into a single loan with 5% interest. Which would lower my payments substantially.

Now this offer seems to good to be true, but I really want it to be true. I do not understand why this company would offer 5%-6% loan of 35K which is basically unsecured and without collateral. Unless there is indeed some new government program which makes this feasible.

Can anyone offer advice as to how I might go about consolidating my credit card depth in a reliable way, or other practices that might help me be able to dig myself out of the hole I am in now.

If anyone knows if this offer is legit, or if there are other vendors out there who could make a legit offer.

I'd like something just as lighthearted and flirty (or dirty, that's totally OK too!), and preferably something that can be left in his mailbox (don't worry it won't be creepy, we've done stuff like that before), or I was thinking something that looks like a parking ticket to put on his windshield.

What are the chances of getting a green card back?

Several years ago a friend willingly surrendered his Permanent Resident Alien card in the United States. Now he wants it back. What are his options? This friend spent most of his life in the United States, but his family decided to return to Brazil for him to attend high school. He returned to the States three years later to attend college, but he never completed his degree. He returned to Brazil, and willfully surrendered his green card in 2004, because he knew that he was not going to be living in the States anymore, nor would he be visiting often.
....Until now. The boy has seen the light, and wants desperately to return to the States and finish his degree. In fact, he is here right now, on a regular old tourist visa. Currently, he is pursuing an I-20 student visa, but is also researching the possibility of recovering his permanent resident alien status. Can anyone tell me if this is possible, and perhaps provide me with a few resources?

How to get rid of credit card debt?

Credit Card debt for teh first time in my life, I'm lost as to what my options are. I have literally no one I can talk to about this and I feel like doors are being slammed in my face when I'm asking for help.

I just graduated in the spring with an Education degree and had virtually no money at the end of the semester. I had to move back to my city (better job opportunities) and some emergency expenses as well as bills starting to pile up. For the first time in my life I racked up my credit card because of that and struggled to pay it off, I'm at about $5400.00 on my credit card. I'm looking for a teaching job right now and in the meantime working at a golf course and tutoring in the side any spare moment I can get in.

I'm almost at my limit and am freaking out because I am living paycheck to paycheck. I have been not approved for balance card transfers from other companies or lines of credit, all say I have too much debt and don't make enough money right now. My last resort was my bank to do a consolidated loan and they submitted the application and I found out today I've been declined :( Same thing, I make too little money for a loan. They refuse to lower the interest on my CC and basically said I have no options....I have no idea what to do, I've had an account there since I was 7 and this this the first time I've ever had problems with debt.

I cut as much as I can for expenses, I have no cable, no land line, never eat out, walk instead of taking my car (unless I have no choice) etc. I've always been good about paying off my card, just times have been very rough for me right now. I feel like I've dug a hole that keeps getting deeper.

I'm so angry, frustrated and sad, I don't know what to do :( I'm bawling here... Any advice or ideas? (I'm in Canada if that makes a difference)

Lord of the Rings Playing Card Game

We're trying to find the rules for a Lord of the Rings themed playing card game, and we can remember about 90% of the rules. We've searched online to no avail (including Card Games Website). Hopefully someone here knows.

So far, this is what we can remember:

You use a regular deck of playing cards. Ace is high, order of suits is spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs (highest-to-lowest)

The objective is to collect an ace, a queen, and a king which will allow you to "visit Mordor" and try to destroy the ring. If the suit of the queen matches the suit of a randomly selected, but hidden (to everyone except the person trying to destroy the ring) Mordor card, then you win

There's a small pile in the center, where the players are competing for the top card that's face up, with the basic rules of War. We'll call this the target card.

Every player has a small pile of soldier cards, with the top card face up. This is the player's soldier that competes against other soldiers to win the target card. The player with the highest soldier card at the end of the turn gets to take the target card, unless someone plays one of their character cards (described below).

Everyone initially starts with 5 cards and you put them into a diamond formation (face down), where each of these character cards serves a specific purpose when played:
- An archer, which can shoot an opponent's soldier card if it is a higher number than the soldier
- A hobbit, which can steal the target card if it has a lower number
- A mage, which forces another player to put their current soldier card at the bottom of their pile, and reveal a new soldier, providing that the suit of the mage is different from the soldier it's attacking
- A hero, which we forgot the details of, but we think can take out all face-up cards that it is higher than
Order of play each turn is determined by the order of the soldier cards, from lowest to highest. So, if there's three players, the one with the lowest soldier card goes first

Players can immediately retaliate if their soldier is attacked

The round is over once all of the target cards are claimed, and a new round begins
- To start a new round, all of the players can choose which cards take the roles of archer, hobbit, mage, and hero. The remainder of the cards become the soldier pile (which need to be shuffled).
- At this point, if anyone has the queen-king-ace combo and wants to go to Mordor, they can test their chances
- The new target card pile is taken from a central unused deck, and has N cards, where N is the highest number of soldier cards any player has, plus one.

Each player has a separate discard pile. All attacked soldiers, target cards acquired, and character cards go here.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Are there other card games with this name?

A small warning: we tried playing with these rules, but the game seemed unbalanced, and we were filling in the gaps as went along. Any small rule change to the hero's role seemed to have a drastic impact on gameplay.

Make the birthday cards I send to other people more interesting. What kind of cool, random stuff are you legally old enough to do at different ages? When I was a teenager, one of the things I most enjoyed hearing on my birthday was all the crazy sheet that I was legally allowed to do for the first time (this was much more fun than being told all the things Napoleon and Mozart had achieved when they were the same age).

I didn't want to hear "Happy Eighteen, buy some beer." What I wanted was stuff like:

"Happy 16th - you are now entitled to buy a longbow"
"Happy 18th - You are now able to buy scrap metal. Don't abuse the privilege"

These are made up (maybe scrap metal is true? I'm so old I have forgotten what people actually said to me), but I want true examples. I have a bunch of friends with birthdays coming up (they are reaching their 22-25 years). It would be useful to know if there are any cool things I can mention in my cards to them,. Obviously the amount of new stuff declines sharply as you move beyond your teenage years, but there must be a few things worth hearing.

I'm based in England but I'd like to hear age-restrictions from any country (e.g. if you lived in France, you would now be old enough to breed horses). Also, anything for any age, even if it is outside my friends' age bracket (e.g. you must be over 65 to Prime Minister of Japan, 5 year olds can vote in Paraguay) would be good to know - might come in handy if I widen the age range of my friends or, God forbid, if my friend group ever gets older or anyone has kids. I'm also interested if there is something cool you are forbidden from doing when you reach a certain age. I look forward to hearing suggestions!

Seeking alternative file manager

I need a free file manager for Windows XP that will allow me to specify the order in which files are physically written to an SD Card. Specifically - if i have a folder of music containing, say, 32 tracks of varying length, I want to be able to instruct the file manager to complete the copying of them over according to something like the file name (if each track title was prefixed by the track number) - The order in which Windows Explorer seems to complete copying seems to be based purely on how long each track takes - i.e. shorter tracks copy over sooner than longer tracks due to their file size. I have recently bought a new card stereo (A Blaupunkt Melbourne) with an SD card slot - it's great.

However, after a bit of head scratching, I have worked out that when it plays back MP3 tracks from a particular folder it plays them back in the order they were written to the card.

For example, I have an album of ten tracks in a folder, I drag the folder onto the SD card in Windows Explorer. If tracks 3 and 10 are the shortest tracks (smallest files) they will complete copying over first and they will effectively be treated as tracks 1 & 2 by the car stereo.

It seems to make no difference how the tracks are named.

It's quiet annoying as it means that to listen to an album in the correct order, I have to drag each file over individually!

Scared of going to prison due to tax payments. Need advice... Please note:
*I was based in the UK.

*I know my spelling and grammar is terrible, I have learning difficulties.

* I now live in a EU country

I recently ran a company for 2 years, 1st year went very well and paid all the taxe for the company, myself and the staff contributions. 2nd year I was hit hard due to rates rising and customers going bankrupt. Which left me in no position to lay-off all the staff and leave the company premises. I tried to keep the company running but was failing to keep up with loan repayments and tax. I barely had enough to survive to pay the bills. I notified companies house that I will no longer be trading in the UK. They asked to write them a letter and I managed to get my accountant to sort out. However taxes was owed to the tax man in which I cannot close the company. There is no chance of getting out of it without declaring myself bankrupt. Which in my proffession means I cannot become a professional in that field anymore. I cannot risk this.

So I decided to move abroad to a country in Europe to start fresh. I left all my personal debt behind for personal loans which started up the company in the first place. My old company will becoming struck-off soon as lack of communication. I have been living abroad for about 8 months, starting up from scratch. Same again, finding it hard to pay bills but without owing anyone where I live. (I will no longer loan money). However I recieved a letter from one of the banks that I owe £800 too, I had not left any information of my wareabouts. They have thretened to take my belongings (Which I don't have any, apart from clothes and work computer). I'm baffled on how they found my address.

I owe approx: £30,000 spread out between banks, loans and credit cards. I leave no bad debt for my company apart from the 2nd year tax in which I lost everything.

I owe approx £3,000 in tax. I had to pay my old staff by selling equipment in the office. Nothing left on the old company is left.

My question is:

* Can the money I owe in the UK get shifted to my countries debt handlers? and risk bailiffs at my door?

* My debt: I have been told if I leave the UK for more than 5 years. The money owed will be cleared. However I have to stay annonoymous in my new address. Is this true?

* I know my company is being struck off in the UK, but the tax I owe. Can I risk getting jailtime for this?

* If I visit family in the UK could I be arrested?

* If I become a registered resident of the new EU country. Could I be tracked by other owed banks in the UK?

Bankrupsy isnt an option :(

I'm having sleepless nights over this and feel like its the end of the road.

I really appriciate any serious response, I know I'm bad for owing money to the banks. But that money was personal to setting up the company in the 1st place.

Help me get photos off my SD card from a cafe in Cambodia

I'm in Cambodia and just tried to upload my photos off my SD card, which I've done before. This time, the computer wouldn't show any folders, although the photos do show up on the camera - they're there! It does show there's a gig of material on there. I've tried a couple of computers, a card reader, connecting directly with a camera cable and putting the card in someone else's camera. The pictures only show up on my camera.

I'm betting the SD card is corrupted somehow. Is there anything I can do to get those photos off from an internet cafe in Cambodia?
