Car rental advice please! I have a group of relatives coming from overseas to visit me in southern Ontario for the holidays. We need to rent a minivan to cart everyone around. What is the best approach - for me to book the rental under my name, for them to book the rental under their name, or is there be no advantage either way? [more inside]

We want to rent a car in Las Vegas, and drive it on dirt roads in Arizona and Utah. What is the cheapest company that allows this (or who will be unlikely to notice we've been doing it)? Bonus points if they provide reasonably-maintained cars. Also, should we get a "Standard SUV" rather than "Mid-Size"? Do they use GPS tracking, and if so does it just check that we stay in permitted states, or do they also check that we stick to paved roads?

I am in the early stages of planning a trip from England to Australia and am looking at driving from Sydney to Perth via Alice Springs in March/April 2008. I have visited 40 USA States so am no stranger to driving thousands of miles. I normally simply use a hire car but feel that Australia would probably require at least a 4WD. A Motorhome is always a possibility but would rather stay in Motels. I see that between Perth and Uluru there are settlements named Northam, Merredin, Southern Cross, Kalgoorlie, Leonora, Laverton, Warakurna and Kaltukatjara. A rental car I had rented was scratched and dented. There was damage in the same area prior to my renting the car, which was noted on my rental agreement. I am very suspicious of the way the rental company has handled this since, and I believe they are charging me for more than they should. I recently rented a car for a trip. I was told that if anyone else was stopped driving the car it would be impounded at my expense (even if I am riding as a passenger at the time). Does anyone know if this is for real? Seems very steep. After all it's perfectly fine for anyone else to drive a car that I own.

InternationalCarRentalFilter In May, the girlfriend and I will be going to the Domincan Republic, flying into Santiago, DR courtesy of cheap JetBlue tickets. We plan to rent a car (she is Dominican/Puerto Rican and speaks Spanish fluently) so we wanted to rent a car to see all the country that we could (we shy away from tourist places).
