We are leasing a new SUV (I don't need any discussion on leasing -- it's the option right now). Looking at the Volvo XC60, the Hyundai Santa Fe, and the Acura RDX. Any insights? [more inside]
I moved from PA to OH a while ago but my car still has a PA plate. I'm still paying off my car which means I dont have the title. What is the easiest process to get an OH plate? Thank you!
I just replaced my 1995 300zx turbo's burned-out headlights with some cheap factory 9006 bulbs and can barely see anything at night. I don't want to get HIDs but would like to find a headlight that actually illuminates the road and makes driving safer. I've narrowed it down to three options: Philips X-treme Vision, Philips HIR2 9012, or Sylvania SilverStar Ultra (which I may rule out, because apparently they burn out really quickly). Does anyone have any advice on these, or any other suggestions? I do plan to clean out the headlights as well, if there's anything to clean out.
I will try to list all the main points to my question. I am getting confused as to what steps I need to take and which forms I need to complete. My parents own a car in NY. They want to give me the car as a gift. I live in Pennsylvania. I am trying to make sense of the title transfer paperwork and the affidvait of gift form. Has anyone done this before? If so, can you walk me through which forms I need to fill out? Do I need proof of insurance before I attempt to register the car? The car is currently insured through my parent's and I am listed on their policy. This is my first time registering a car and I don't have much experience with PennDOT. Not sure if this matters but I have a PA driver's license. Thank you!
I'm feeling frustrated with my automobile situation and don't really know where to start. The gist of it is that I can't really afford the payments and maintenance on my car, and I think I want out, but I don't know how. [more inside]

We're going to drive to the Buffalo area to sell the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid mentioned in my last question, "How to sell our Ontario-registered never-imported American car". The car has 111,000 miles and is missing its front bumper cover due to a collision with a deer but is otherwise in good condition. [more inside]
I car share with my former partner. How do I get myself to buy my own car? [more inside]
I recently acquired a 2007 Toyota Camry XLE. I dislike this car far more than I ever would have thought possible. Please help me learn to tolerate it. Many more details under the fold. [more inside]
Hello, I am thinking of importing a car from Japan to Canada. To import to Canada, the vehicles must be 15 years old, but usually have very low mileage. I have done this before with Japanese models with great results. Now I am thinking of importing either a 2000 Alfa Romeo 156, or a 2000 BMW 3 series Wagon. Both have relatively low mileage of around 75K... [more inside]
Took our Subaru to the transmission shop recommended by the local Subaru mechanic. That was in October. It's still there, and we are at the end of our rope. [more inside]
Help me please I did a dumb and now my car reeks of the acrid stench of defeat. [more inside]
The AC compressor attempts to run when I start the defroster, presumably to dehumidify the air. For some reason though either the compressor itself or the belt that runs it (and the water pump, I think) is smoking when the compressor is on. I'm not worried about humidity and I can't think of a downside. Is there some safety or reliability reason I shouldn't do this? If not, is it as simple as disconnecting a wire?
I have to jump my car almost every time I drive it in the wintertime. Help! This is not fun at all. [more inside]
The passenger side doors on my Honda Odyssey keep freezing shut in cold weather, and last night the windshield iced over on the inside. Do I need to have it checked out, or is that normal? [more inside]
In October 2014 I bought my first car – a used 2003 Audi A4 3.0 convertible – and despite being in excellent condition, there is some work I'd like to have done on it in the future, but is it worth it? [more inside]
I'm looking at yet another maintenance issue on my expensive-but-fun (and 100% paid off) sporty car. I'm starting to think the maintenance overhead trumps the value, and looking for advice on knowing when to say when, in terms of cutting my losses and buying another vehicle. [more inside]

I switched cars with a friend because they needed to borrow mine. I parked their car in a parking lot. Came back to find that their car had been sideswiped and no note left. Parking attendant didn't see anything. What are my next steps? [more inside]
Our 2004 Chevy Venture minivan (120,000 miles) developed major transmission issues pretty much on schedule that would cost an estimated $2000-3000 to fix. Its condition minus the transmission issue would put it at the lower end of good/upper end of fair, with about a $2,000 trade-in value. Its only strong point is that following a catastrophic engine failure a couple years ago, we put in a brand new engine that now has only 23,000 miles on it. What's the best way to get the most money when we get rid of it? [more inside]
I just bought a 2000 VW Golf, which has a cassette player. Can anyone recommend a convertor to play music from my iPhone? The best review I've seen is for the Sony, but there is still a lot of criticism. Please recommend the best option, whether it is the Sony, or another. Thank you.
I have a 2011 Toyota Camry SE (4 cylinders). I need to replace the tires. What kind of tires should I get? I'm a bit uncertain because of the rims. [more inside]
My 2007 Ford Focus just refused to brake on a wet, slightly snowy road at 30 mph. The weather conditions really weren't that bad and everyone else on the road was driving at normal speeds. This car has failed to brake in snow before; I thought brand new tires last year had solved the issue. I just had the car checked over completely, in preparation for winter, and the tires were pronounced totally fine. I've noticed nothing wrong with the brakes and the car's had regular maintenance. It has less than 100,000 miles. [more inside]
I sometimes lock my keys in my car, my friends do sometimes, I like to be uber-prepared, i already carry around jumper cables, and a small repair kit, and I'd like to add a car door unlocker kit to my car. I see a slim jim is a common tool, and an inflatable bag thingy. Is this the best way? Will it damage the paint/car? What are my options? Thanks.
Hi MeFi, I was on the receiving end of a car accident which occurred last week during rush-hour. I was traveling home from work on a very busy Charlestown Ave when I got had another car smash into mine. I had a bad case of whiplash and went sorta blank for a second but after I came out of the car I noticed a busted BMW behind with a driver still sitting there. The girl from the second car fled the scene. My suspicion was that she didn't have a license or didn't own the car or both. So in short, BMW (Car A) > smashes into grey vehicle with (Car B) which in turn smashes into me (Car C). My insurance adjustor is saying this is a complicated case because of how 'many impacts' I felt or heard. What the hell does this even mean? It felt like someone hit me with a hammer. He said the first party which caused the scene hasn't yet accepted responsibility and they have 30 days to do it or not. I'm sorta left broken and had two trips to ER and two MRIs taken which showed I have an upper disc injury in neck and shoulders. The back side of my car is completely damaged with me being unable to shut my trunk. It is still drivable but it looks like hell. I don't want to dish out $500 for a rental since I'm already drowning in bills. Insurance is telling me that I can't get reimbursed for the rental until someone accepts responsibility. Is this how it usually goes with insurance companies in USA? I'm flabbergasted. Should I get an attorney?

Car Talkers of MeFi, help me solve a mystery! My 2001 Subaru Forester had a cylinder misfiring: car shook, check engine light flashed. Then it healed itself and the mechanic couldn't tell what was wrong, or that anything was wrong at all, so I brought it home. Then it started misfiring again tonight. Then it healed itself partway, but the check engine light is still on. What should I think and what should I do? Details below the fold. [more inside]
I'm in the market for a new Mazda. Invoice prices, holdbacks, dealer cash, special financing deals, and the like are all out there on the Internet. We are staring down a new car -- both of our 12/13 year old cars are on their way out. We have no clue what to do, because we put very low mileage on our cars. I know conventional wisdom is that leasing is not as smart as buying, but I'd like to understand why. Here is where we stand: [more inside]
My wife removed the stereo from our 2006 Renault Scenic to extract a coin that had been stuffed in the CD slot by one of our lovely children. This wasn't the first time she'd done this, and there haven't been any problems in the past. However, upon returning the unit this time, the dash controls for the stereo were found not to work, only those on the steering column. She removed the unit again, checked the fuses, replaced the unit - and now the bloody air conditioner is dead. [more inside]
Yesterday I was involved in the first automobile collision I have ever been involved in, and am unsure what the best way to proceed is. The pickup truck behind me was rear-ended on the interstate, resulting in it being pushed into my own vehicle. My car is practically undamaged, and I don't think I want to go through the process of filing a claim. Is this a bad idea? More details inside. [more inside]
Asking for a neighbor: On ~10 year old Honda Accord, door lock broke so neighbor crawled in through the trunk. Upon starting engine, alarm activated (horn) and she couldn't get it to stop. I disconnected the battery & gave her a ride to an appointment. What next? [more inside]
I have a car with a loan I am currently paying that is titled, registered, and insured in Ohio (I am an Ohio resident). I would like to give this car to my grandfather and continue to pay on it, but he is a resident of Michigan. Can I register and insure the car in both states so that he can drive it legally in Michigan?
I am planning on buying a lightly used car in the next few months, so I’m starting to research what kind to buy. What make/models (and years) should I consider? [more inside]
Can this be cleaned? Should this be cleaned? Or should we go directly to replacing the seat? I've cleaned the surface, but it still smells, and I suspect the foam underneath must have gotten soaked. I'm willing to spend the money if it needs to be spent. I do not want to spend the next 10 years trying to excuse a faint eau de crap to my passengers.
In January we (family of 3) are moving to the East Bay area and need to buy a car. Our budget is ideally around $10,000 but we could stretch. What cars should we be focussing our search on? Should we be buying new (obviously more than $10,000 - is the expense justified?), a manufacturer certified second hand vehicle, second hand on Craigslist, or ...? Is having a warranty important? I have a 2006 Honda Pilot with 150,000 miles. I have a problem with the headlights. [more inside]
I was in an accident in a common mid-90s sports car. Summary: Body work, broken front axle. Because of the age and damage, the insurance will likely declare the car "totaled". My insurance will likely have to pay for repairs to the other car involved. I have liability only insurance, so they're not going to pay me anything regardless. No one was injured. Does my insurance need to care about my car, if it is liability only insurance, besides assessing for "fault"? One of my family members would like to repair the car. Assuming (he has done this kind of thing before, parts are plentiful, and time is not an issue) that he can make it safely drivable again, what do I need to do to make it legally drivable again? Is there anything I can do now to make it easier to get the car on the road in the future? I'm in northern Virginia.
I am driving from Toronto to Philadelphia later this week for my brothers wedding. I have an opened bottle whiskey that I'd like to bring in the trunk of the car-- it's a bottle of great emotional significance and a family tradition. I know that in the US the open bottle is fine as long as it's in the trunk, but what about Ontario? also, where can I see these laws online?
It appears that my new car I only just got in May has it's first real injury. [more inside]
I remember playing a game ages (ten years?) ago on (now defunct) bonus.com, which involved manipulating different-coloured cars using switches and other things. I played it on a desktop computer, and it used flash or shockwave. One needed to get a certain amount of cars into specific places to pass the level. The game was played from a top-down perspective. There were many levels. I think, though I may be mistaken, that the game had a person's name in the title. Can you help me find it? [more inside]
I know very little about cars. But now I find myself needing to buy a car to replace my decrepit 1999 Chevy Prizm. I can pay cash up to a maximum of $6,000 (including all surcharges, taxes, etc.). I'd rather not get financing, as we're still paying-off my wife's car. [more inside]
Wondering if you could help with a risk-benefit analysis of lowering the amount of insurance on my car. I still owe money on it, but I could potentially pay it off and then save money on my insurance. BUT is the insurance good to have anyway? [more inside]
