When is rebuilding a transmission worth it?

I had my transmission diagnosed as needing a rebuild and they quoted about $2800 in the northern Virginia area. 2007 Toyota Avalon starting problem...

About two weeks ago I started my Avalon and pulled it into my garage. I turned the car off and decided to restart it to pull a little closer inside. It would try to turn over but would not start until after about 4 tries. The same thing today, I started the car, turned it off and went in the house for something, came out and it would not start until about 4 tries. There are no dash lights burning after starting, what could be the problem?

Finding a fair way to split car expenses/insurance with your SO

My SO and I had been sharing car expenses evenly down the middle while I was using her car for work which requires traveling approximately 2-3x/week. By car expenses, I'm referring to the car note and paying half of the insurance premium. I also recently contributed to paying for some of the car maintenance. Prior to being in a relationship with her, I never used a car and would commute via public transit. After moving in with her, the deal was to split car expenses evenly as moving in with her didn't afford me easy access to public transportation. We have since relocated and my work doesn't require me to use the car as much as I can now, once again, use public transportation. However, I still use the car with her to go grocery shopping, run errands on the weekends. My question is, since I have reduced my usage of the car to about 1 maybe 2x/week for work, should I still be paying for half of all expenses? Or what percentage of costs seem fair as far as paying for the car note and insurance?

How do you buy a car? Also, what car should I buy?

My insurance company totaled my car, so in a few days I'll have a check and they'll stop paying for (part of) my rental car. With my current level of car-buying sophistication, I think my strategy is to walk into a dealership and say "Can I have $13,000* worth of car, please?" What safe, high mileage, 10-15k used car should I buy? How do I know whether to finance or pay cash? And, how do I actually, you know, do it? *I don't actually have a firm budget yet, of course. Registering a car in the US with expired registration from Canada

My partner moved from Ontario to Massachusetts two years back. His car was registered in Canada. He put his certificate in the washer and it came out in pieces that he taped together. MA didn't accept this torn up certificate when he tried to register the car, and ON was unresponsive about mailing a new certificate, so he procrastinated the registration. Meanwhile, we just realized that the ON registration expired a few months back, so he shouldn't even be driving this car. What are his options now to get the car registered in MA?

How to keep our cat from urinating on our car?!

One of our cats is a habitual out-of-litterbox toilet user. Due to this issue, we've had to put him in the garage at night when we can't keep an eye on him. However, we recently purchased a new car and plan to begin putting it in the garage - but we're not sure how to keep that cat - plus possible one other - from urinating on the car. Can anyone think of some solutions? Right now all I can think of is a cover or tarp.

Will admitting fault void my LDW on a rental car?

Returned a rental car recently, had some damage in a crowded parking garage. Seems like the rental agent was trying to get me not to admit fault, but I was dumb and did so. Prius MFD weirdness

The Multifunction Display in my 2003 Prius will cheerfully display the settings for the Audio and all that, but the main screen which shows the fuel efficiency is just black. If I show the audio or the Display settings, that comes up just fine, and brightness is normal, but the main display won't show, and the backlight doesn't seem to be lit when on that display. I hooked up a code reader to the socket under the dash, but it's coming back clean. Any ideas?

How do I (and do I need to) deflea a car?

Someone who lives in a flea-infested house got a ride in one of our company-owned cars (we found out about the fleas later). A co-worker just sat in the car for a few minutes this morning, and she found a flea on her person a few minutes ago. She does not have pets, so we're pretty sure the flea came from the car. I have to drive the car home. I have cats. What, if anything, should I be doing to deflea the car? Car is a four-door with cloth upholstery.

Got in a car accident last night (in Philadelphia... a block from my house). (Both drivers alone and ok.) Do I really need to bring my car in for scheduled maintenance already?

I received an email from my Kia dealership today saying that it's time for my "next regularly scheduled maintenance visit." It has been three months since I bought the car (a 2015 Soul), and the owner's manual states that the first recommended maintenance visit should be at 6 months or 12,000 km, whichever comes first (and I'm nowhere near that number). There are no signs of anything being wrong with the car, and I've been regularly checking fluid levels, tire pressure, etc. Can I just ignore this email? [more inside]
