I am contemplating getting rid of my car, as it is expensive to insure and there is car sharing available in my building, and I mostly use public transit these days anyway. But I don't really know how to actually do that.

I've got a '98 Subaru Legacy Outback with 138k miles that I need to get rid of. It runs, but would need a fair amount of work done to continue running for long. It is safe to drive, but I wouldn't want to take it on a long trip. Trying to determine the best option: Selling, donating, or junking. In Philadelphia.

I'm approaching the dreaded moment that I need to buy a new (used) car. I hate the idea of negotiating with a salesperson. I love the idea of no-haggle. But I also hate the idea of getting a lemon. I've read loads of reviews of Carmax online, but they're so mixed, I don't know what to think. Can you offer insight?

I need a reliable car that I can count on. I'm a person with pretty bad credit, but I have a steady income in a job I've had for a while. What are my options? I'm thinking hard about checking out a used car lot; what should I look for, loan- and car-wise?

I have a friend that is having some trouble with a car he purchased and he's trying to figure out what could be the best outcome in this situation. Basically, it looks like his odometer may have been tampered with and has been making far more repairs to this car than seems reasonable. He contacted the AG and they're willing to take the case but he's not sure if that's best.
I don't have all of the finer details, but the gist of it is inside. He said there were other smaller repairs, but these are the main ones. Also, I'm trying to keep it a little vague just for anonymity's sake, but I can provide details if necessary.

Would you buy this used Toyota Corolla? I've got a line on a 1997 Corolla with 150k on the engine, but the transmission was replaced five years ago (after dying at 125k) with a used transmission from
JapanDirect. That transmission now has ~75k on it, in addition to whatever it had before it was installed. I'm having my mechanic look at the car this week, but have no idea if any of this is a warning sign. Is JapanDirect reliable, in your experience? Would you buy a used car with a replacement transmission?

Where do folks in Philadelphia buy used cars? - We need a used car, sensible Japanese economy style. Is there anywhere accessible from West Philly where there are those streets with multiple car dealers on them? The online reviews for some of the small local dealers here are ... scary. Thanks!

I've been looking for a specific, older car model and found one on Craigslist in beautiful condition. It's in Philadelphia, I'm in New York. I'm going this week to look at it / buy it.
I think the guy is asking too much for it. Some people I've asked say don't discuss price until you show up, but I'm not sure if that's right. How do I do this?

Just over two weeks ago a young friend bought used car from a dealer who's 80 miles away. The car came with serious engine problems. The dealer says they'll take it back for a refund but won't return the full price she paid. They say they'll keep their costs, but won't even discuss on the phone the amount they'll return. How best can she get all her money back?

Car selling questions: (1) Is there any reason for me, as a seller, not to disclose the VIN in a car ad, say on Craigslist? A Carfax lookup would reflect favorably on this car, but I don't know if there are "car identity thief" issues here. I know dealers list VINs all the time. (2) What is considered a reasonable precaution if someone wants to take a test drive or have their mechanic inspect the car? I'm not sure what would stop a thief from asking for a test drive and then never coming back. This is an older model car so I don't have any loss/damage coverage, but I'm guessing I should until it's sold.
