We go see my mom in Welfleet, Cape Cod once a year and usually spend the night in Boston after the flight, in which case we pick up a rental in Cambridge where it is hundreds of dollars cheaper a week due to airport taxes (or so I am told by the rental car agencies) [more inside]

The older boy wants a classic car for prom in Staffordshire near Wolverhampton. I found Kitt for £250 for five hours, but it didn't have back seats. The only car available from one classic car website I found is a 1979 Austin Allegro for £300 for the day. Hugely wrong on so many levels. How can I find a classic car in the West Midlands for a middle of the week prom in June?

According to my trusted mechanic, the transmission on my aged buggy is shot (I haven't had 3rd gear for a while, and now the car has begun to have trouble getting into 2nd and 4th) and the car is not worth the cost of fixing it. Fair enough--except that I literally don't have time to buy another (used) one right now. Things will calm down slightly in the second week of May, but not until then. And while I'm aware of other options (the bus, taxi/car services), I don't have the time and money to rely exclusively on those until my schedule eases up. Nor can I afford to rent a car until then. So I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a short-term option that I might be overlooking, up to and including a Magic Car Fairy. Alternatively, if anyone has experience driving a car with this kind of issue and can tell me how safe (or un-) it is, I'd appreciate that input.

We're going to be driving from Seattle, Washington to Ashland, Oregon in July, doing it in one long day's drive each way. We'll be driving a rental. What model of car is the most comfortable? What model has the best gas mileage? What model has the optimum balance between the two? [more inside]

If I pick up a rental car at the airport, can another family member then drop it off for me even though they weren't with me at the time of pickup?
Second, can that other family member also be allowed to drive the car even though they weren't with me at the time of pickup?

We're planning a trip next year and will be staying (for free!) near Lovina on the North-central coast. We'd like to rent a car for the week and day-trip to see the other parts of the island. Is this realistic and/or advisable? How are the roads in reality? [more inside]

I'm in a bad pickle at this time, so I'm reaching out to the Green to help me decide which the best next step is moving forward.
To keep it as simple as possible, I got in a car accident more than two years ago, using a major car rental company. I got an unexpected bill from the car rental company almost two years later (late December 2011) for a high amount (let's say over $30,000) that the other party apparently were given by the rental company due to their alleged injures. I had no insurance when I was in the accident. For many reasons, I felt the collection of the debt was unfair. I had temporary legal representation (a family friend), but he was unable to get the car rental company to forgo the collection, so he bowed out early January. [more inside]

Want to rent a BMW 3 or equivalent when I am in NJ. Pick up Newark airport or any other NJ location within 60 miles of Newark Airport. I found websites that rent out exotic cars for like $2k a day. I am not looking for an exotic car. I just want something like a bmw 3 or audio a4 etc. Can anyone recommend a site or rental company? I can look up the rates but if you know them then feel free to mention it. Thanks!

We'd like to take the train from Boston to DC. Is it possible to rent a car at Union Station in DC or do we have to schlep out to the burbs somewhere?
We need to rent a car since DC isn't our ultimate destination. We'd rather not take the train to BWI and get a car there, so we're trying to figure out our options.
Thanks in advance, everyone.

I'm thinking of flying into San Francisco (SFO), renting a car, driving up the coast, and flying home from Portland.
I'll spend a few days in the city before heading north. I want to avoid renting the car either at the airport or in the city. (This is a fun trip. Driving in San Francisco is never fun for me.)
I've rented before from a small Hertz shop within walking distance of the ferry landing in Sausalito. Are there other rental car shops within equally easy reach from public transportation or a cab from the city into Marin?
