The cheapest car, period. Don't care about safety, looks, frills, country of origin, or anything else except as to how it relates to cost.

I need a car for a daily 6-mile each way commute. There are no public transportation alternatives and carpooling is not an option. Cycling is also not much of an option. I'd like to buy the cheapest car possible ($5000 or less, preferably much less), use it for a couple of years and then sell it or just donate it to charity.

What is the protocol for buying a new car in seemingly high demand and non-existent supply? When is a wait list really a wait list, and how do I actually get this car?

Oh no! My Volvo 240 is going down the tubes due to a transmission that just decided to start clanking. I've decided its not worth the $1000-1700 to fix it, so I need to buy a different car relatively soon. I've never bought one before. How do I?

I want to buy a new car - specifically, a Volkswagen Multivan (called a Caravelle in the UK). I've seen lots of good advice for people in the USA but some of it's not applicable here, especially the stuff about finding out how much the dealer pays. How can I find this stuff out?

A new car costs, say, $16,000. A state's sales tax is, say, 8.5%. That would add an additional tax of $1,360. Which is about the price of a nice new laptop. Is there a way to do this interstate over the internet to avoid the extra tax?

I'm thinking about buying a new car in the next year. I live in Seattle, Washington, where the sales tax is about 8.8%, but I visit Oregon frequently, where there is no sales tax. Would there be any drawbacks to buying the car in Oregon to avoid the sales tax? I would still register and insure it in Washington.
