I'm going to be in Los Angeles from June 6 to June 11. I'll be hiring a car to get around L.A. - though we'll mostly be sticking to Central LA and Santa Monica over that weekend (7/8 June). I've been to L.A. before and done most of the touristy things - relying on both local buses and hop on/hop off tourist buses. Because I'll have a car this time, I was wondering what recommendations people have for things to see and places to go that are tricky to get to without a car. Anything within a couple of hours drive of Los Angeles. Thanks.

How would I track down someone who holds the most or at least multiple licenses for driving? Ideally someone who's legally cleared to drive anything from a motorcycle to a locomotive. [more inside]

We are off to Lake Tahoe this weekend and we're bringing our dogs
. Does the green have any tips or experience for the long drive (3 hours) or secret canine friendly haunts on the south shore?
We thank you as do the puppies.

Tell-me-what-I'll-need filter: I'm going to be making an 11 hour drive, alone, and all in one day, then a couple days later I'll turn around and do the whole thing in reverse to get back home. I've never made so long a drive by myself before and need suggestions to make it as . [more inside]

My car was totaled, (totally not my fault) and I'm in the market for a newer car (yipee!). I was in a 2003 Mercury Sable and found it was too much car for me, now I'm leaning towards a coupe or smaller hatchback. Help me decide! [more inside]

Possibly going to move and work as a caretaker of a small farm-sanctuary in upstate NY. The problem? It's on a windy, steep dirt road and my car is less than good. Help! [more inside]

The state DMV won't let me renew my registration on my current car because I owe property taxes on the old car. Is that legal? Can the state refuse to help me comply with one law if I am potentially violating another one? [more inside]

If a person has a valid out of state license and has had their in-state (lets say... Virginia) license revoked, and is pulled over driving in Virginia, if they produce an out of state license, can the police officer link this valid out of state license to the revoked in state license? [more inside]

How dangerous is it to drive with earphones? I drive a noisy, noisy little car with a crappy stereo, and the tempation to just listen to my flash mp3 player with some Koss isolating earbuds is pretty strong, yet I don't want to endanger others or die in a fiery wreck. But at some point, with the car as noisy as it is, what's the difference?

AutoFilter: In a moment of terrible mental absence this morning, I drove about half a block in second gear with the hand brake engaged. While the right rear wheel smoked and the brake glowed visibly red, there seem to be no other consequences an hour after the fact. Does this merit a call to the mechanic to check it out if other malfunctions haven't arisen?
