Adopting a dog with IBD. What should I expect?

We are considering adoption of a dog who was diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Seeking advice from people who have experience caring for a dog with IBD. I am concerned about: Scavenging. We live in a dense suburban neighborhood with no fenced area. Doggie gets walked 4 times a day. As hard as I try, he grabs mysterious food items off the ground. Sometimes I can pry the food away from him. Scavenged food is bad for IBD maintenance. Progression of the disease. Can dogs live normal healthy lives with IBD? Or is it a string of crises? Our last dog had a serious heart condition. He lived a long, reasonably comfortable life. But it was costly, time-consuming, and we worried a lot. We grew attached to this dog before we knew about the IBD. I wonder if we should decline to adopt him. [more inside]

the canine's incisor

I have an older dog whose front tooth is loose enough that I can wiggle it with my fingers. I'm taking him into the vet tomorrow, but before I do, I'm wondering: is it possible for the vet to remove a dog's tooth without putting him under anesthesia?

help my dog stay chill

Two years ago, I rescued an older 10lbs shiba inu/chihuahua mix who has a lot of fur and overheats easily. We've already had a few hot days in Los Angeles this year, and I'm concerned about keeping him cool and healthy, especially since we've moved to a new house that gets a lot warmer during the day. I want to see the wheels turning in my dog's head.

My Old English Sheepdog is bored with his Kong. What brain-teasing toys and games do you entertain your dog with? I am very impressed with the design and concept of the Dog Brick, however budgetary constraints compel me to seek out less expensive options from the hivemind. So, how do you give your dog's brain a mental workout, with the end result being the satisfaction of finding a yummy treat?

Yes, I cook for my dog. How can I do it better?

I'd like nutritional advice for homemade dog food and maybe treats, using easy-to-find ingredients. I haven't been able to find high quality commercial dog food where I live, so I make most of her food myself, but I would like to make her homemade food as healthy as I possibly can with the resources I have, which are somewhat limited. Current routine, and many(!) more details inside. [more inside]

Keeping ticks off my dog

I am having a problem keeping ticks off my dog. He is on Advantix, which the vet said to give him every 3 weeks, but I am STILL finding ticks on him. He is kept indoors for the most part, but he does like to explore the backyard, and we go on a long walk each day. I don't want to keep him cooped up, I want to let him be a dog, but I don't want to have to keep taking ticks off him...so gross. Any advice on things to try other than Advantix? Thanks! Meds for dogs with cognitive dysfunction syndrome

Our dog was recently diagnosed with a mild form of canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS). The vet prescribed 5mg Anipryl, which costs $100/month. I could get generic Selegiline from petmeds.com for $12/month. So I was wondering if anyone has had any experience of CDS in dogs, and using either med. Thanks! [more inside]
