I work at a non profit and have been running an internship program for two years. It is funded annually, but on no set schedule. I am prevented from insisting on a schedule or requiring a reasonable gap between funding date and start date. I am expected to just pull the program together within weeks of the donation being received. With a vague start date and no selection schedule, how do I advertise and maintain a pool of candidates? Please help me come up with a creative solution! [more inside]

I'm an extremely liberal Democrat who comes from a long line of extremely liberal Democrats, but I've become increasingly disillusioned with the national party apparatus over the past handful of years. Can you help me put together a list of progressive Democrat office-holders and up-and-coming candidates to buoy and inspire an otherwise devoted liberal's flagging enthusiasm? [more inside]

Help me be an informed voter in my local (U.S.) Senate and Congressional races tomorrow! I'd like to key in my ZIP code and get a concise, impartial overview of the platform and positions of all the candidates on the ballot. Direct me to site(s) that may serve, Metafilter.

My client is late paying me. Plus, I am concerned about how they are (or are not) using the products and services I am providing. Should I stop providing those products and services and send a late notice, or somehow give them the benefit of the doubt for a while longer? I want this client to succeed at their endeavor, but I don't want to be taken advantage of either, whether intentionally or not. [more inside]

What modern book (preferably) or magazine article/essay would you recommend to learn more about the history of populist candidates in American politics? I'm wanting something recent enough to include the gubernatorial term of Jesse Ventura in Minnesota. [more inside]

Last week I received my absentee ballot for Central Massachusetts
. I haven't been there in a few years, so I don't recognize some of the candidates running for the more obscure offices. When Google fails, and the local newspaper coverage is sketchy, how do you go about finding out more information about these candidates? [more inside]

Can someone please explain why a candidate gets all of the electoral votes in a given state if they have the majority of votes in that state?
Wouldn't it be more sensible and accurate to allow electoral votes to be distributed according to the percent of votes carried by each candidate in that state?
Am I missing something?
