Lump on the pup: what do I need to be researching?

While I wait to hear results from a needle aspiration... what can you tell me about scary doggy lumps, in your experience? After getting our dog her radical spring haircut we discovered a lump, between marble and walnut-sized, on her upper front left leg, about midway above the joint, on the front of the leg. It's movable (moves around under finger pressure/movement), and doesn't seem to cause her any pain or warrant her attention at all. [more inside]

Can you help me fine this article online?

My urologist suggested I read an article regarding prostate cancer in the February 2012 issue of Esquire (the one with Bill Clinton on the cover). I just went to three stores and of course the February issues are gone. Can you help me find it online. My "google fu" isn't great! I would like to read it online before my a.m. appointment. It doesn't have to be free. Please hope me! No special snowflake stuff inside!

Being supportive at home and from a distance

My sweet boyfriend's dearest friend has been diagnosed with Hodgikn's Lymphoma. Last time we saw him he was complaining about a lump in this throat, and saying they didn't know what it was but not to worry, he was probably just getting over an infection. Typical blase doctors, oh yeah forgot to mention, he is five years into a ten year prison sentence for some youthful foolishness. [more inside]

Elderly cat with lump on inner cheek inside mouth

I've got a 14-year-old male indoor cat with a large lump inside his mouth, on his cheek. He doesn't seem to notice or care much—he's been eating/drinking and behaving normally (alpha male). He accidentally bites down on it sometimes and causes it to bleed. It's not a substantial amount of blood, but that doesn't seem healthy. [more inside]

Death without pain

I don't want my sister, hospitalised in the U.K. to die in pain. She will die soon of anal cancer and surgical complications including an extremely painful fistula. I would like to know if she has legal rights to be kept pain free, even if that leads to death. I know doctors can make that choice. I would like to know if she can also make the choice. I do not live in England, and cannot stay with her until she dies, others of the family will be with her. [more inside]

How I should feel about my dad having a tumor?

My dad was an angry person throughout my life. He would throw temper tantrums to everyone else in the household. My mom would lose friends due to his behaviour. He has accused my mom of cheating, he makes decisions without listening to her and then throws temper tantrums when my mom tries to resist, and he has accused my mom of being lazy during times when she was the only one working. Neither my brother or I have much respect for him anymore, but we still love our mom. Mom phoned yesterday telling my dad has testicular cancer and is getting surgery for it. I'm coming in to visit at my mom's request. But she's going to try to make me go through the motions of pretending we're a healthy family. Am I wrong to not have strong mourning feelings towards my dad's cancer?

Sweeter dreams

I like a whisky nightcap from time to time. Does it make sense to take a calcium / magnesium carbonate-type antacid (Rennies, Tums, Rolaids) at bedtime to neutralise the impact the whisky might have on the GI tract, even though I have no symptoms of heartburn or indigestion? I would sort of think it might make no difference at all - that these are sometimes even recommended as a dietary supplement - but I am aware that alcohol is a risk factor in upper GI cancers and I wonder if it might be a useful preventative.
