Having found the lump a year ago this June, it took me until today to find the courage to try doing something. Many of the sites I found said to go through my local health department, so I finally worked up the courage to walk in today. They had no idea what to say, and no longer offer any program that would help. I walked out with a pamphlet for a clinic in another town that they think "might" have a program to help with a sliding payment scale but they weren't even sure about that. [more inside]

Last week we found out that my mother has breast cancer. This isn't her first battle against cancer as she had colon cancer six years ago, and so far mom is being very matter of fact and strong. She is going in for surgery to remove it tomorrow and then will start the whole radiation/chemo regiment in the new year. Any good last minute, easy to find, supplimentary gift ideas for her? After a diagnostic mammogram and subsequent immediate ultrasound, the cyst discovered in last year's same tests has grown. I'm being sent for a biopsy, but have to wait TWO whole weeks due to being uninsured and going through "charity" care. I'm an anxious mess....how on earth will I survive the two weeks? AND, how long do biopsy results take? [more inside]

It's my first question here, ... and it's kinda heavy...
I met a girl/lady. She 's the sweetest person, but she's got a lump inside one of hear breasts. Size of a big plum, except longer. She moved in to CA, has no health insurance and believes that holistic medicine alone will do the trick if it turned out to be a breast cancer...
She would probably prefer - no chemical, no doc bs, better to live quicker happy, rather than slower but with pain kind of path, but I 'm worried and scared, maybe more than she is. I've heard that mammography and some other scan is needed to evaluate and that it's a sort of financial black hole. What to do folks? I need to get her checked, but both mine and her finances are at all times low/0.
Please, any input will be greatly appreciated.

A dear family member is having a mastectomy/reconstruction/biopsy this friday. She's across the country, so I can't be there. I'd like to hear any success stories and warnings, plus any advice on how I can help or what I can send.
