How to fight the points?

My friend got pulled over on an insurance check yesterday (UK). It turns out that the insurance company cancelled his policy 2 months ago because there were insufficient funds for the direct debit. How can he fight this? The insurance company sent him a letter, which he never recieved and they are claiming that they are under no legal obligation to phone him to tell him that he is no longer insured. He hadn't noticed that the direct debit hadn't been coming out of his account and so he was completely unaware of there being any problem. Until yesterday.

He is now being hit with 6 points, a £200 fine and they've taken his car away, which will cost him £150 to get back plus £12.50 per day for storage.

He has only had his licence since October, so being within the 2 year probationary period it looks like he might lose his licence over this. His job involves a lot of driving.

Does anyone know if there is a way to fight the 6 points? He doesn't care about the car or the fine, but these points could wreck his career at this point. What happens now? Who should he ask for help? It seems completely insane to me that they should get away with this when he had no clue that he was doing anything wrong.

I know yanal.

Has fan response ever saved a TV show?

Has fan response ever saved a TV show? When cult TV shows are cancelled, oftentimes the fans try to get their show renewed through petitions, mailing drives etc. - has there been any cases where networks have responded to these fans by renewing a show they'd just cancelled?

Bonus question: do networks have a contingency plan for when this happens? For example, according to Wikipedia the cancellation of Carnivale generated 50 000 emails in one weekend - that must have been a royal pain in the a$$.

i blame the writers strike

What good TV shows can I watch on DVD that won't leave me frustrated? I've recently been watching a lot of TV shows on DVD, thanks to the utter crap that's on TV these days and my unwillingness to pay for cable. I enjoy recent shows, early seasons of shows currently on the air, classic shows, sitcoms, dramas, Law & Order: CSI type shows, cartoons... pretty much everything, as long as it's good. By good, I mean shows that won't leave behind a bunch of unresolved storylines, and that don't take forever to watch.

For example, the first season of Friday Night Lights was completely satisfying. There were some minor cliffhangers, but more or less everything got wrapped up nicely. How I Met Your Mother was entertaining, even though I had to watch two seasons to get to Marshall and Lily's wedding. Something like Dawson's Creek would be a nice guilty pleasure, but six seasons' worth of DVDs is too much of a time commitment. I saw a lot of good suggestions in this earlier question about underrated TV shows, but I've always been wary of watching My So-Called Life and Freaks and Geeks, because I worry that I'll be left jonesing for a conclusion that is never going to come.

So, my fellow Mefites, what shows do you like to curl up on the couch with?

MIA: My Boyfriend's GMail Account

My boyfriend's gmail account is just gone. Help! He tried to log in the other night and was told that his password was wrong. He knew it was correct, so he sent a request to have his password sent to him. He was then told that his account didn't exist. He tried to sign up again, but his gmail name was already taken (of course it was!). I know that GMail is supposed to archive everything, and I think of GMail as the safest game in town. Has anyone heard about something like this happening? If so, how does one deal with this. It's just GONE! A few years of messages and IM's, plus all his calendar and search information. HELP US!

ABC's cancelled show, Relativity

Remember the ABC show, Relativity, with Isabel and Leo? God, I loved that show. It was so romantic and sweet! I just spent an hour Googling just to try to remember what it was called, until I finally figured out it was called Relativity. Sadly, Amazon implies that waiting for the release of a DVD is basically futile, as the studio is uninterested.

Hypothetically speaking, if I wanted to tell a friend how to download, legally or shadily, the 17 episodes that were made before its untimely cancellation, where would I tell him to look? Ahem. The "friend" in question already looked on Amazon, iTunes, the Pirate Bay, and Usenet-without much luck at all.

I would really like to see this show again, it was so good.

Name this cancelled TV show.

I have a friend that's trying to remember the name of a TV show from a few years ago that Fox cancelled abruptly. It was a drama about a family that had moved into a fire station and was having financial problems trying to rebuild it. Sorry, that's all I was given to go on. I checked the rec.arts.tv pages for the 2000s but I couldn't find anything that sounded like it.

How can I watch more TV pilots?

How can I watch cancelled/never-aired TV shows? I've recently been able to watch a few pilot TV shows that were never picked up as recurring series, specifically Heat Vision & Jack, which starred Jack Black and Owen Wilson as a super-smart astronaut and his melded former-roommate/motorcycle, and Lookwell!, which featured Adam West as a faded detective-show star still obseesed with solving crimes in real life, and the much-viewed Global Frequency pilot.

I was also able to use P2P to find episodes of cancelled shows like Life on a Stick, Eyes and Threshold that aired in different countries like New Zealand after the shows' American cancellation.

I'd love to be able to watch more pilots, either of shows that have been rejected in the past, or of shows that are being developed right now. And "missing" episodes of cancelled series would be a treat as well.

One specific abandoned pilot I'd really be interested in seeing is a show that Matthew Perry did shortly before being cast in Friends - he played a baggage handler in a futuristic "space airport" of some kind in a sci-fi/comedy whose title I can't recall.

Any leads or advice on finding shows along these lines?
