I am Canadian in academia and am considering moving to the US in the next year. My partner is a pediatrician (MD, LMCC) who is board-certified in Canada in pediatrics, ie she has her FRCPC designation. If we move to the US, she would like to work, which could be additional fellowship training or working in private practice as a pediatrician. Questions about the legal/certification requirements inside... [more inside]
Traveling to Canada via ship from New York one way in early October, and need to get home again after a stop in Nova Scotia and then spending a few days in Montreal. There will be 4 of us, including my elderly dad, who for some reason is set on driving back to Philly. [more inside]
I watched a quirky ~10-episode Canadian comedy TV series 2-5 years ago. I recall it involved an auto body shop, alcohol, and a bank heist. [more inside]
A good friend is moving to Vancouver (from the US) and I'd like to get him a Canadian board/card game or two as a going away gift. What games are popular in Canada? Or classically Canadian? Or have a Canadian version that is different enough from the US'ian to matter?
Finally paid off all my consumer debt and now saving 30% of my take home. Yay! I've been using YNAB and making my way through Frugalwoods, madFIentist, Mr. Money Mustache, JD Roth... for encouragement and best practices. The catch is that I'm a Canadian living in the US for work and I could be here for 2 years or 20 years+ and I think this complicates the savings matter considerably. [more inside]
I wish to send my dear Finnish penpal a bunch of cool things you can only buy in Canada (and maybe also stuff that may be sold elsewhere but is only really popular in Canada). What to send, MeFi? [more inside]
I'm starting a one-year position at the University of Copenhagen shortly. I'm a Canadian currently living in Germany, and I have a few questions. [more inside]

After reading a bit about efficient market theory and the benefits of lowering your costs via investments such as ETFs (especially over 20+ years), I closed my account with my adviser and sold my existing high MER mutual funds. Now what? [more inside]
I've been accepted to a conference in Kraków, Poland in the first week of July. I've decided to add some vacation on the end. However, I've never travelled outside North America before, and am not really sure how to go about getting started. Plane tickets, insurance, route planning, picking where to go, eep! [more inside]
I've just finished doing my Canadian taxes using Turbotax. The net income calculated by inputting my T4 is higher than what I actually netted (calculated using excel + mint) by about $8000. [more inside]
My flooring is all vinyl and tile. I sweep and clean regularly, but a film of dust forms quickly and my cat constantly sheds. I live in a ~600 sqft place and it's annoying to put up with. What's the best way to prevent and clean cat hair and dust?
Recently poutine came up in a convo I had with a foreigner. After they told me they visited Canada and while here made sure to try poutine, I explained to them that I was familiar with poutine before most Canadians knew what the hell it was and that in the not-too-distant past poutine wasn't well-known outside of Quebec. I estimated that it only started becoming popular outside of Quebec in maybe the late 90s. Am I off in this estimate, MeFi? [more inside]
My Canadian relatives often travel to the U.S. to see me, and they have become increasingly concerned about their health insurance coverage, to the point where they are considering not making any future visits. They do buy Blue Cross, but they say that it won't cover pre-existing conditions. Is this true? What happens if one of them falls ill while they are here with something pre-existing? Any Canadians with personal experience getting sick while out of the country?
I'm a Canadian working in Toronto with an incorporated business, a business chequing account with one of the major banks (Canadian currency only), and a Paypal account connected to that chequing account. What should I consider when deciding whether to invoice American clients in Canadian or American dollars? [more inside]
The Canadian Conservative Party is currently at 30.2% in nationwide polls but, due to factors such as vote splitting and regionalized support, is currently projected to form a minority government with 131 out of 308 seats in Parliament. That's undemocratic. Idea: what if opposition parties agreed not to run candidates in specific ridings so as to create two party races (Conservative-Liberal in some ridings, Conservative-NDP in others). Would that be lawful? [more inside]
I'm a Canadian that got clocked doing 81 in a 65 in upper NY state a few days ago. I'm trying to figure out my options. [more inside]

Our mobile phone contract is up with Bell and we'd like to not renew with them again. Admittedly Canadians get the short end of the stick no matter what mobile provider there is, but is there at least a more decent end of the stick? [more inside]
What are some good reads about Canadian political history? [more inside]
I live in Canada. Every now and again I try to understand what's happening in federal or provincial politics. Every time I look I only seem to find information on the current scandals or vote-grabbing hot-button issues. Is there somewhere I can understand more without the rhetoric and spin? [more inside]
What are some contributions that Canadians have made to meteorology as a science? I'm looking for technologies, theories, whatever you can come up with. Even Canadians that were involved in the development of something to do with a technology or meteorological finding. I've spent most of my evening on Google with little success, yet I'm required to teach this to my students.
I need some advice on how to best manage a severance package cheque I’ll be receiving in a week or so. I have room to contribute, approx. $15k or so into my RRSP (this may be understated, going from memory) Details I want to stay reasonably liquid, I’m not sure how long it will take me to find a new position and I will be living off of this settlement in the interim Is there tax benefit to contributing to my RRSP now, and withdrawing in the New Year? If I just take it all, I’m thinking I’ll get a decent tax return when I file – true/false? Is there any benefit to asking for 2 cheques, one now, one after January 1st? Total severance will be around $70k or so, gross Thanks for your help!
My friend's daughter was travelling to Canada over the weekend. Apparently she was stopped at the border due to some health insurance related issue. She didn't make it to the hostel she was supposed to stay at the first night, or the volunteer program she was destined for. She called those places when she knew she wouldn't make it, but she hasn't called home at all, as far as we can tell. And we have no idea where she is right now. What can we do? [more inside]

Do you know some long-wait presents? I am planning an anniversary gift, and I would like to show that I want to be with this person for a long time. I am interested in signing up for some long wait tours, experiences or gifts. I am thinking of things like the Canadian flag at parliament hill - a 25 year wait list, but anything >1 year is good. DualCitizenshipFilter: I was born an American citizen, the son of a Canadian mother. A few years ago I applied for and received my Canadian citizenship, and was provided with my Certificate of Canadian Citizenship. I have never applied for and do not have a Canadian passport. If I were to enter Canada now (by air or land) what do I say, what do I tell them? Can I just show them my canadian card and be done with it? What about coming back to the U.S.A.? Can it be done both ways without either passport?

Non-American who occasionally travels to America wants a Southern California phone number (Los Angeles area) that has data and that my friends can text to. My phone works on all USA carriers. What's the cheapest permanent solution? A web-based (or other non-cell) solution is also welcome as long as people can text to the number. [more inside]

I'm tired of doing my own taxes, and afraid of hiring another accountant. What is the best/cheapest tax software for a Canadian living in Quebec? I just can't deal with another accountant. I'm tired of being told something will cost 150$ and then get charged 500$ as if they didn't know what they needed to do. I want a tax software that is going to do the weird stuff for me. I don't depend or trust what the box says either! I have some rental income, some contract income, and some salary income. I also have a second (gf) who has simple income.

In a few days I will be staying with friend's family in western France, at a house they own. I will be in the UK the next few days. Normally I would bring wine or chocolates as a thank you for the accommodation, but France does these much better and cheaper than the UK (I am told). I am Canadian. What could I bring that would still be a great gift, that I could find in London? It should be something like food or drink, and something of benefit to people on vacation. Price about $50. The friends I am visiting are French/Canadian and appreciate quality/luxury
