Can I move to Canada if my boyfriend is offered a job there?

My boyfriend was recently laid-off from his job in a competitive industry where companies are concentrated in certain areas -- he can't find another job in the industry just anywhere. He is looking for a new job in the industry. We (both US citizens) plan to go together to whatever place he finds a job, and there are a good number of opportunities in Canada (relatively speaking), so we are trying to decide if he should apply for jobs there. If he were hired by a Canadian company, would I be able to move with him there, and work after a certain amount of time? [more inside]

Buying Boots and a parka in Northern Alberta (Canada.) Where to look?

Buying Boots and a parka in Northern Alberta (Canada.) Where to look? The post title says it all. I'm buying boots and a parka in Northern Alberta (Canada.) I'm only a couple hours north of Edmonton and can go there if necessary, but ordering online is also something I'd consider. I plan to be spending a decent amount of time outside and want to get gear that will keep me warm, and last for years to come. What are the quality names? Where is a good place to look?

How can a Canadian on a working holiday visa in Japan get a work visa to stay longer?

Always desiring to experience living in Japan, I moved in the country from Canada almost a year ago on a working holiday visa, which will expire next month. My life here is stable so far, including a job at a company willing to sponsor me for a work visa. I want to live in Japan for a longer period, but the problem is I don't seem to meet the requirements for a visa. I am aware that getting married is the easiest way, but unfortunately, I do not have that possibility. Is there anything I can do to stay and work in Japan longer? [more inside]

Cheap Prescription Glasses Relensing in Canada?

Is there somewhere cheap & reliable in Canada (online or by mail) where I can send my prescription glasses and sunglasses frames to be relensed in my own prescription? I have purchased some funky/vintage frames online and would like to have my prescription put in them but the local optical shops are charging $200+ and I just can't afford that for each pair of glasses (I have just purchased several pairs). I see there are some US-based sites (that probably ship overseas which is OK) but none seem to be available in Canada. Bonus if you can give me a personal recommendation. Thanks!

How does a US senior citizen deal with insurance and health care while living in Canada?

My 83-year-old mom is thinking of moving to BC to be near me, which I would love. She's a US citizen. (I'm a US citizen, too, but I'm a Permanent Resident of Canada) Does anyone know how my mother would deal with issues such as insurance and health care? I don't think she'll ever be eligible for health care in Canada, so she would have to have something to fall back on if/when she needs health care.

Two Canadians and a tiny American crossing the border.

Do to a family medical emergency, my wife and I are probably going to be renting a car and driving from Philadelphia to Toronto tomorrow night. We are both Canadians living in the US on temporary NAFTA visas. Fun complication: Our daughter is four months old and is an American citizen with an American birth certificate. We haven't yet gotten her a passport or applied for her Canadian citizenship. Should we expect to have any difficulty crossing the border with her, in either direction? Is there anything we can get in the next 24 hours to make things go more smoothly?
