My husband and I have a small consulting business. I would like to scan all our receipts and then download them into Sage 50 so as to save time when doing our monthly accounting. I have a two year old niece. Her mom is American, her pop is Finnish, and her auntie biscotti is Canadian. I wanted to send her tiny little versions of the TEAM SUOMI and Team Canada and maybe Team USA hockey jerseys because (a) OMG the cute and (b) so her parents can dress her appropriately for Sochi. I can't find them, except for old versions of the US one. But I refuse to believe that Canadians and Finns do not want to dress their tiny tots in hockey paraphernalia, so I have to think these are out there somewhere. Can someone help me? My Finnish is limited to race drivers and the word "lansigootansmanpystykorva" so I can't really search on Finnish sites.

I want to go on a long hike before my wife and I buy a house or have kids, sort of a 'final big adventure by myself' before completely settling down. The Appalachian Trail is tempting but 5 months is a long time to be away from home (not to mention it'll be expensive). Please suggest some alternative long hikes. Maybe in the 1-2 month length range. Bonus points if your suggestion is in Canada. [more inside]

BC'ers - how do you calculate the rate of income tax you should be paying? After googling I'm coming across wildly different rates for brackets, as well as terms like 'average rate' and 'marginal rate' (what are these? The internet doesn't want to tell me!) I normally do my own taxes at home (UK) but am being driven round the bend trying to get the figures for this.

Hello All, I'm in a complicated situation and I need some serious help on this one: I'm a Chinese citizen with China passport. And I work in the US on H1b visa. My visa is expired. And my 1-797 is about to expire on 11/23/2013. My company is working on my extension which filed in premium but delayed by government shut down. And this should be all done before 11/23/2013. But I'm planning on an urgent trip to Finland for a couple of weeks to see a friend. And to apply for Schengen visa, I need valid H1b visa. I'm on a tight schedule here, I need the visa ASAP. I live in Canada. Every now and again I try to understand what's happening in federal or provincial politics. Technically I have dual Canadian/US citizenship as my father was a US citizen living in Canada when I was born. I had a passport in the mid-1980s as a small child, but it's long gone now. Who should I talk to about getting another one? (details inside) [more inside]
Two plainclothes detectives showed up tonight at our door. They claimed that a lewd picture had been sent from one of our cellphones to another person. We truthfully told them we knew nothing about it. They asked very few questions, mostly to confirm our identity, said "no one's in trouble but no-one should be sending stuff like this" and left. What should we do/expect now? Details inside. (Ontario, CA) [more inside]
I need to (with some urgency) select a wireless barcode scanner that our inventory guys can use to grab codes from a pallet of worth of small boxes. It's got to operate without a constant USB connection, and preferably store the scanned codes locally on the scanner for later transfer to a laptop (USB for that later transfer is fine). Has anyone got similar devices working right now that they're happy with/happy to recommend? I'm in Canada, so bonus points if Newegg or similar sells it up here.
My niece celebrates her eleventh birthday soon. She loves to read. She lives in Canada; I live in the UK: for convenience’s sake I’d like to buy her books from Amazon.ca as a gift. Besides reading, her previous interests have included princesses, ballet and cupcakes—the latter leading me to order to some volumes from The Cupcake Diaries as last year’s gift. What’s new and cool in the world of books if you’re Canadian and eleven?
At the end of July I visited Canada for the first time. I took my car with me. While driving through Toronto I got onto 407 ETR. Thinking better of it I got off after going one or two exits. So what now? [more inside]

My husband was born in the US and moved back to Canada as a baby with his Canadian parents. Apparently he received a proof of citizenship card when he was a teen but now it is lost. I understand that he will need this to apply for a Canadian passport. His sister is getting married in January in Mexico, where he will be in the wedding party. We have applied for the replacement citizenship card already about a month ago but have gotten no confirmation so far, and I just read on the website that it will take 6 months. This is not enough time to get it and the passport before mid January. Now we are panicked. Is there anything else we can do? Can he apply for an American passport instead in order to travel to Mexico? He has dual citizenship since he has an American birth certificate. Thanks
What is the structure and rhyme scheme of a French Canadian sailor's lament? Anglophone sailors have the sea chanty, a song for work... but I understand francophone sailors in the Maritimes have both upbeat songs for work, and slow, sad songs for downtime, called laments. How are these structured musically and lyrically? Are there any translated examples?
I know a woman who is extremely talented in making baked desserts. She wants to open a home-based business. How can she go about doing that in a city like Toronto? Are there any legal/accounting stuff that she needs to know about beforehand? Is there some sort of governmental health supervision program that needs to see the house where she does her work? Can you give me some tips on how she can go about selling her product legally?
For the longest time, I had thought that I had taken rare photos of the masts of the Bluenose 2 on June 2, 2011 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. But I just read a news article from September 2012 that claimed that the masts had not been in Lunenburg for two years, making this impossible! [more inside]
I had a sudden craving for ketchup chips a few days ago while chatting with a fellow Canadian-in-America. Prices on Amazon are ridiculous--$9 for one large bag of chips! Are there any local sources in Philadelphia or northern Delaware where I can buy Lay's (not Herr's) ketchup chips at a reasonable price?
It's a huge hassle for anyone who has a 9-5 job and no savings to pursue a masters or a pHD in a reputable/respectable college or university, no matter what country s/he's in. If that's my case, how can I make it work if I live in Toronto, Canada? (I'm interested in reading your thoughts and experiences even if they're not about Toronto per se).

How should mention my nationality when writing a cover letter to employer overseas? I have read that I am not supposed to say anything about my marital status, religion, etc... But since I am a foreigner so I don't want the recruiter to find it out in my last paragraph kindda. I feel that I should at least tell them why I am relocating and such. However, it's also weird to bring it up in the first paragraph either (and get thrown to trash right away...). In fact, I am a US citizen writing to Canadian employer so it is basically very similar to letters to my local companies. Unfortunately, it is harder than I thought due to the citizenship and job market, I guess. I have searched and couldn't find any sample letter for employer overseas... Do you guys have any idea or experience how I should put it better?

My friend's daughter was travelling to Canada over the weekend. Apparently she was stopped at the border due to some health insurance related issue. She didn't make it to the hostel she was supposed to stay at the first night, or the volunteer program she was destined for. She called those places when she knew she wouldn't make it, but she hasn't called home at all, as far as we can tell. And we have no idea where she is right now. What can we do? [more inside]

I graduated high school having been in french immersion and when I graduated I did the testing and I was offically bilingual. Hurray! Now, suddenly, my job wants me to get my french proficiency tested to see if I can satisfy the required language requirements for my branch. (We need to have X# of people able to speak French because a percent of our clients speak french as their first language, and right now we're down a person apparently). Au secours! [more inside]

I was reading interviews with various successful graphic designers, and realized that most of them cold-called their future employers and sent them samples of their work. Are there any resources out there that list design studios, book publishers, editors, writers, ... that one can send work to? Is it possible for an immigrant designer to gain an edge on the competition in the graphic design job-hunting game in Canada? [more inside]

Somewhere between 1997 and 2001 in Seattle, I saw a 1 or 2 hour independent film on TV at a friend's place. The subject was a man who wanted to row a small boat across a series of lakes and rivers somewhere in northern Canada. He traveled alone and filmed himself. I don't remember enough nor know enough about Canadian geography to say much more about the location. [more inside]

We will be importing a 2004 Honda Accord into Canada this weekend, I hope. We must pay taxes (16% of value of the car!) when we bring it in. It is up to us to put a value on the the car and hope the customs agent accepts our assessment. If they don't accept it, they will put their own value on the car and we must accept that and pay taxes accordingly. Two questions: how would you assess the value? And how would you try to pay the least amount possible? [more inside]
