I'm leaving NYC on Friday and driving to Canada for 12 days. I have a rental booked, but also just bought a car out of state and had it delivered to a mechanic. They did a safety inspection and some minor work that will not be completed until Friday, the same day I need to leave. The car does not have temporary out of state tags or license plates but I have an appointment with the DMV on Thursday. If possible, I'd like to drive this vehicle to Canada but am very skeptical of the timeline. [more inside]
We're planning to drive from Kelowna to Vancouver in the middle of September, and we'd like to take a scenic route and perhaps stay overnight somewhere in the middle. Problem: we're getting conflicting advice about which "scenic" route to take! [more inside]
My cousin is visiting from the US and her joints are hurting a lot. Since she is a visitor she has no OHIP or health insurance here. For someone who is medically uninsured, I need more information on (1) x-ray centers and (2) medical labs (for blood work) in the Toronto-Mississauga area. Also, I would appreciate your advice on any (3) good, inexpensive health insurance plans you know about. If you can help me with any of these it would be a great help.
I'm going back to school for communications in the fall. I'd like to start gathering career ideas now so I know what to look for when I graduate and also so that I pick the right courses for my career path. When I went in to my undergrad in 2007, I had no idea of what I would do upon graduation. So, I'd like to gather some ideas now and tailor my course selection towards potential career options. My friend has an uncomplicated divorce (no assets, no kids, no shared debt, filing taxes singly.) The ex lives in Canada and is a Canadian citizen, my friend who is filing for divorce is in California and a United States citizen. She has free legal help-- they got the papers filled out properly and explained the general process, but didn't explain serving papers. Paying to speak to a lawyer is out of the question. How do we serve papers internationally, to a known address? What if she refuses delivery or can't be found?
I'm renegotiating my salary next week in a consulting startup but don't have much to go on in terms of being able to compare to similar jobs because the industry is rather niche and growing fast. How would you go about calculating a fair request with very little information? [more inside]
I have a Virgin Mobile USA phone, which is useless outside the US. I'll be in Canada (Nova Scotia and Ontario) for two weeks, and while the idea of taking a break from little electronic devices is tempting, it actually would be kind of helpful to have a phone. What's my best (ie, cheapest) option? [more inside]
I'll be in Vancouver and the surrounding area next week. What's the best way for me to get data on my cellphone? Something like a prepaid mobile SIM card tied to a data plan. Just relying on wifi isn't an option as half of the time I won't be in the city. [more inside]
Does anyone know of any remote, off the grid (USA or Canada) trading post(s) that are still operational?
What stylish but versatile mix and match clothing articles and accessories should I pack for three July nights in Montreal and four nights in a cabin off Lake Beverly in Ontario? How do I keep them looking "fresh" despite heat, humidity, and my own unforgiving sweat? [more inside]
At the end of the month, my girlfriend and I are heading to Nova Scotia. We'll be staying with a friend in Pictou for a few days, then renting a car out of New Glasgow and heading off on our own. We have four days (three nights) before we fly out of Halifax...and no plans at all. Where should we go? Recommendations for nature/odd attractions/good food wanted. Particularly lovely towns? Good routes? Places to stay?
I will be visiting my Canadian relatives and want to bring them some goodies from California. What can I bring that they can't already get there? [more inside]

The short of it: (1) Do you have any personal experience getting into Canada and re-entering the US with only a driver's license and birth certificate? (2) What is the drive like between Toronto and Ogdensburg for someone who has really only spent time in cities and driving on major highways up and down the East and West coasts? (3) What should we do in Toronto? [more inside]

A lot of my socks (plain black, mid-rise/crew, breathable) are getting thin or holey. I looked at previous women's socks questions on AskMe, and they recommended brands that don't ship to Canada (Uniqlo, Gold Toe, Smartwool, etc.) and can't be found in my city (Ottawa). What are the best women's appropriate-for-office-work socks I can get in Canada? [more inside]
I want to go take pictures of mountains in Alberta, but so far, no luck. Snowflakes inside. [more inside]
A 69 yr old wheelchair bound man, in SK, Canada, may end up homeless in the very near future. I need to know our options so that he continues to be cared for. In short, all the other safety nets have had holes in them, and we are being threatened with eviction. He relies on me (caregiver/wife) to bathe him, dress him, attend to personal hygiene/bathroom needs. He cannot walk at all, can stand with help, has use of one arm/hand. Living on the streets isn't going to work. Where do I turn now? More details below the fold. [more inside]
Last week, I bought a new car. Can I drive in and out of Canada with a temporary license plate, registration, and insurance card? [more inside]
I am a US citizen working for a US company who is being sent to Europe later this year on a temporary (~1 month) work assignment. My ability to work in the destination country is not an issue. My flight to get to and return from the destination leaves from Canada. I have a NEXUS card but won't be arriving in Canada via a NEXUS lane, so I'll do regular land-based Canadian immigration. How do I tell them the purpose of my visit? If I say "flying to Europe," is "for work" an acceptable answer if they ask why, or will CBSA even ask why? I'll have copies of my air tickets away from and back to Canada, along with proof of ties to the US. Am I over thinking this?
The Canadian Conservative Party is currently at 30.2% in nationwide polls but, due to factors such as vote splitting and regionalized support, is currently projected to form a minority government with 131 out of 308 seats in Parliament. That's undemocratic. Idea: what if opposition parties agreed not to run candidates in specific ridings so as to create two party races (Conservative-Liberal in some ridings, Conservative-NDP in others). Would that be lawful? [more inside]
Applying for permanent residency in Canada. Struggling with obtaining important documents/photos of older children who are living in the US and not applying with us ("Not accompanying"). [more inside]
Due to winning a very late announcing scholarship, I'll be travelling to Vancouver in just over a week's time to attend a library conference. My girlfriend (who is from the US) is going to Canada to do a mural in a hotel and they require her to have 3rd party insurance/liability insurance. She is only going to be there for a week and she's only making $1000 for the project so she doesn't want to spend all her money on insurance. Do any of you know of a cheap and quick way to get temporarily insured in Canada? [more inside]
I am finishing my Ph.D this month and will be moving to Canada for a post-doc position. The town where I will be moving to has a VERY tight rental market and from what I have heard, apartments rent within hours of being posted on the local rental websites. My husband is flying out about a month before we officially move up to secure a place for us to rent, but we are worried about trying to pay for a place without a Canadian bank account. We don't want to give cash to the landlord because it is untraceable and we are pretty sure no one will accept a check from a US bank. Has anyone had to deal with this before? Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks!
I am a permanent resident of Canada, and have been since 2010. Between 2010-2012 I lived in New York attending school, but moved back to Toronto in 2012 and have lived here full time. For most of my departures and entries into the country there are stamps in my passport to show. However, last October and November I took 2 trips to the US entirely by land, both trips were only a few days. I just now realized that upon re-entering I never got a stamp from either trip. I'm worried that there will be no proof of me coming back to Canada and the last 6 months of my residence won't count. Does the Canadian border keep a record of the permanent residents they let back in? Where can I find this information?
My partner and I are moving to Canada to get our PhDs and so we have to apply for study permits (we're US citizens). The application asks if you've been arrested, and my partner has been once. How do we explain the arrest on the application, how do we ensure his study permit isn't denied because of this? Is there anything special we should include? [more inside]

From about 2008 to 2012, I was self employed as a private tutor in Canada. My income ranged from about 25k - 40k. During that time, I didn't collect GST/HST from my students because I didn't realize I was required to. I received a letter on Friday from Canada Revenue saying that I've been registered for an HST number and asking to submit GST/HST for 2010-2011. I'm a bit scared now, and wondering if anyone can give me an idea of what the penalties might be? I plan to talk to an accountant in the next week, but I'm just hoping to get an idea of what I might be in for.
How would I go about finding out who owns the rights to albums and songs released by a long-defunct music company? Specifically, a Canadian label named Arc Records. The article I linked to states that Arc came under the control of Ahed Music Corp Ltd in 1969 and that both companies ceased operations in 1986, but I haven't been able to track down any information beyond that.
My in-laws are flying in from India to Boston. They've never been to Canada and are curious to see the Eastern part including Toronto, Ottawa, Quebuc, Montreal. Do you have any recommendations on guiding tour companies which they may enjoy. (Please note, they aren't open to renting a car, so I'm researching guided tour options). Thanks in advance, -Z
MITTENFILTER: I'm buying some mittens (requested) for a friend's kid, a 5 year old boy who is extremely enthusiastic about transportation vehicles of all kinds (though especially those related to space exploration). They live in snowbound articky Montreal (I live in sunny Southern California). The mittens should be very warm and of the variety which have long arm gaiters so they can be sealed up with the kid's winter coat's sleeves. What mittens would you recommend? Are there cool kid novelty ones, perhaps in the shape of transportation vehicles of all kinds or something similar? are there astronaut mittens for kids even? Thanks for all your tips!

I have a two year old niece. Her mom is American, her pop is Finnish, and her auntie biscotti is Canadian. I wanted to send her tiny little versions of the TEAM SUOMI and Team Canada and maybe Team USA hockey jerseys because (a) OMG the cute and (b) so her parents can dress her appropriately for Sochi. I can't find them, except for old versions of the US one. But I refuse to believe that Canadians and Finns do not want to dress their tiny tots in hockey paraphernalia, so I have to think these are out there somewhere. Can someone help me? My Finnish is limited to race drivers and the word "lansigootansmanpystykorva" so I can't really search on Finnish sites.
