Vancouver BC area: How to calculate your income tax?

BC'ers - how do you calculate the rate of income tax you should be paying? After googling I'm coming across wildly different rates for brackets, as well as terms like 'average rate' and 'marginal rate' (what are these? The internet doesn't want to tell me!) I normally do my own taxes at home (UK) but am being driven round the bend trying to get the figures for this.

What should I tell the customs agent about the $$ value of my car?

We will be importing a 2004 Honda Accord into Canada this weekend, I hope. We must pay taxes (16% of value of the car!) when we bring it in. It is up to us to put a value on the the car and hope the customs agent accepts our assessment. If they don't accept it, they will put their own value on the car and we must accept that and pay taxes accordingly. Two questions: how would you assess the value? And how would you try to pay the least amount possible? [more inside]

US Tax Law Change for Americans Living Abroad

As a US citizen, living and working abroad for many years, I recently heard of a new law that I must file tax returns on the US by Aug 31, 2011 or face a penalty. Anyone know about this? If US citizens live and pay taxes abroad, they generally are exempt up to $91,500.

Live in Canada, want to sell my car. Now what?

I imported my car to Canada from the USA while in Vancouver on a work visa, so (as a non-settler) I paid no taxes on it. Now, I'd like to sell it — what should I do? Go back to the border office and import it for reals (how much would this cost?) or export it back to the US and sell it in a Carmax in Seattle or something? [more inside]

RRSP Contribution Timing

Let's say Jack is in his 20s and in March 2011 he gets his first ever paycheque of $1000. He wants to put $100 into an RRSP account. When can he make this first deposit? Is it right away in March 2011, the first day in January 2012, or in April 2012 after he finally gets all his tax forms and files his taxes, getting a notice of assessment that states his contribution limit?

Where's my rebate, mon ami?

Revenue Quebec Filter: I mailed my taxes to Revenue Quebec somewhere around the 3rd or 4th of May. That's slightly late, but it's OK because they owe me money. I even sent it express post so it wouldn't get lost. Two months later, I've received no cheque, no direct deposit, no notice of assessment--nothing. [more inside]
