I am a Canadian citizen and web developer / eLearning specialist who has been working remotely (in Canada) for several American clients. Some of my clients are interested in having me come down for short periods to work with them. I am not an employee of any American company, and from what I can see, I cannot be sponsored for a TN visa or an H1-B visa. Is there any way at all that a Canadian consultant can legally work in the US for short periods of time without being an employee? [more inside]

Are there any Mefites that have worked in the US (as a US citizen) for a Canadian company? How does it work with taxes, benefits, etc? This is going to become a very relevant issue for my wife tomorrow, and Google has not been a lot of help in finding authoritative information. [more inside]
I'm a US resident, looking for a cell-phone I can use both in the USA and Canada to receive phone calls. Any outgoing calls would be a case of a very serious emergency, and I don't particularly care what they cost. Minimal if any texting. No smartphone. Minimal minutes. I'm looking for a way to have a phone on which a few select people can reach me if they need to, and which will work across the widest area possible. Long standby battery life a plus. Suggestions for phone and plan appreciated. [more inside]

After holding out lo, these many years, it seems I need to get a cell phone. Browsing AskMe & the internet, it seems the best, least contracty option is 7-11's Speak Out program. But maybe there's a better option of which I am not aware, and maybe you can help! [more inside]
Several (five? more?) years ago, I used to read this guy's daily lunch blog. I just had the urge to look it up again, but I have no idea where to begin finding it! Googling it isn't helping me because there are bazillions of food blogs! Typing "Canadian man food blog ponytail" into the search engine is getting me nowhere fast. [more inside]

I would like to register copyright for four works to fulfill a funding agency administrative requirement. They do not require that the registration be done in any particular country. I am registering solely to fulfill this requirement so I would like to do it in the simplest and cheapest way possible. Unless registering somewhere will somehow abridge my rights in an irrevocable way, I do not care about the legal aspects, only that registration is done by 15 September, if possible. [more inside]

My friend has an uncomplicated divorce (no assets, no kids, no shared debt, filing taxes singly.) The ex lives in Canada and is a Canadian citizen, my friend who is filing for divorce is in California and a United States citizen. She has free legal help-- they got the papers filled out properly and explained the general process, but didn't explain serving papers. Paying to speak to a lawyer is out of the question. How do we serve papers internationally, to a known address? What if she refuses delivery or can't be found?
I'll be in Vancouver and the surrounding area next week. What's the best way for me to get data on my cellphone? Something like a prepaid mobile SIM card tied to a data plan. Just relying on wifi isn't an option as half of the time I won't be in the city. [more inside]

The short of it: (1) Do you have any personal experience getting into Canada and re-entering the US with only a driver's license and birth certificate? (2) What is the drive like between Toronto and Ogdensburg for someone who has really only spent time in cities and driving on major highways up and down the East and West coasts? (3) What should we do in Toronto? [more inside]

Due to winning a very late announcing scholarship, I'll be travelling to Vancouver in just over a week's time to attend a library conference. I am finishing my Ph.D this month and will be moving to Canada for a post-doc position. The town where I will be moving to has a VERY tight rental market and from what I have heard, apartments rent within hours of being posted on the local rental websites. My husband is flying out about a month before we officially move up to secure a place for us to rent, but we are worried about trying to pay for a place without a Canadian bank account. We don't want to give cash to the landlord because it is untraceable and we are pretty sure no one will accept a check from a US bank. Has anyone had to deal with this before? Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks!
My partner and I are moving to Canada to get our PhDs and so we have to apply for study permits (we're US citizens). The application asks if you've been arrested, and my partner has been once. How do we explain the arrest on the application, how do we ensure his study permit isn't denied because of this? Is there anything special we should include? [more inside]

MITTENFILTER: I'm buying some mittens (requested) for a friend's kid, a 5 year old boy who is extremely enthusiastic about transportation vehicles of all kinds (though especially those related to space exploration). They live in snowbound articky Montreal (I live in sunny Southern California). The mittens should be very warm and of the variety which have long arm gaiters so they can be sealed up with the kid's winter coat's sleeves. What mittens would you recommend? Are there cool kid novelty ones, perhaps in the shape of transportation vehicles of all kinds or something similar? are there astronaut mittens for kids even? Thanks for all your tips!

I have a two year old niece. Her mom is American, her pop is Finnish, and her auntie biscotti is Canadian. I wanted to send her tiny little versions of the TEAM SUOMI and Team Canada and maybe Team USA hockey jerseys because (a) OMG the cute and (b) so her parents can dress her appropriately for Sochi. I can't find them, except for old versions of the US one. But I refuse to believe that Canadians and Finns do not want to dress their tiny tots in hockey paraphernalia, so I have to think these are out there somewhere. Can someone help me? My Finnish is limited to race drivers and the word "lansigootansmanpystykorva" so I can't really search on Finnish sites.

I live in Canada. Every now and again I try to understand what's happening in federal or provincial politics. Technically I have dual Canadian/US citizenship as my father was a US citizen living in Canada when I was born. I had a passport in the mid-1980s as a small child, but it's long gone now. Who should I talk to about getting another one? (details inside) [more inside]
I need to (with some urgency) select a wireless barcode scanner that our inventory guys can use to grab codes from a pallet of worth of small boxes. It's got to operate without a constant USB connection, and preferably store the scanned codes locally on the scanner for later transfer to a laptop (USB for that later transfer is fine). Has anyone got similar devices working right now that they're happy with/happy to recommend? I'm in Canada, so bonus points if Newegg or similar sells it up here.
My niece celebrates her eleventh birthday soon. She loves to read. She lives in Canada; I live in the UK: for convenience’s sake I’d like to buy her books from Amazon.ca as a gift. Besides reading, her previous interests have included princesses, ballet and cupcakes—the latter leading me to order to some volumes from The Cupcake Diaries as last year’s gift. What’s new and cool in the world of books if you’re Canadian and eleven?
My husband was born in the US and moved back to Canada as a baby with his Canadian parents. Apparently he received a proof of citizenship card when he was a teen but now it is lost. I understand that he will need this to apply for a Canadian passport. His sister is getting married in January in Mexico, where he will be in the wedding party. We have applied for the replacement citizenship card already about a month ago but have gotten no confirmation so far, and I just read on the website that it will take 6 months. This is not enough time to get it and the passport before mid January. Now we are panicked. Is there anything else we can do? Can he apply for an American passport instead in order to travel to Mexico? He has dual citizenship since he has an American birth certificate. Thanks
I had a sudden craving for ketchup chips a few days ago while chatting with a fellow Canadian-in-America. Prices on Amazon are ridiculous--$9 for one large bag of chips! Are there any local sources in Philadelphia or northern Delaware where I can buy Lay's (not Herr's) ketchup chips at a reasonable price?
We have a collection of old foreign money that we'd like to get rid of. What's the best thing to do with it? Complicating factors: not that old, not that much, not exactly a curated collection, we're in Canada. [more inside]

I graduated high school having been in french immersion and when I graduated I did the testing and I was offically bilingual. Hurray! However, that was over 10 years ago and I have hardly spoken it since I graduated. Now, suddenly, my job wants me to get my french proficiency tested to see if I can satisfy the required language requirements for my branch. (We need to have X# of people able to speak French because a percent of our clients speak french as their first language, and right now we're down a person apparently). Au secours! [more inside]
A friend of mine is moving from Southwestern Ontario to Winnipeg next month. We're throwing a going-away party and I'd like to give a speech and tell a few jokes. What are some good jokes I can tell about Winnipeg or Manitoba or the Canadian prairies? Thanks!
Somewhere between 1997 and 2001 in Seattle, I saw a 1 or 2 hour independent film on TV at a friend's place. The subject was a man who wanted to row a small boat across a series of lakes and rivers somewhere in northern Canada. He traveled alone and filmed himself. I don't remember enough nor know enough about Canadian geography to say much more about the location. [more inside]
