Help me choose an American bank

I'm a Canadian who got a job in the US and is moving to New York. I need to open an account at an American bank. What's a good American bank? Any to avoid? Is there a difference or are they all the same? (Alas, for those tempted to say TD, it actually confers no advantages to those from Toronto OR the Dominion.)

Moving to Canada from the US - question about renting an apartment

I am finishing my Ph.D this month and will be moving to Canada for a post-doc position. The town where I will be moving to has a VERY tight rental market and from what I have heard, apartments rent within hours of being posted on the local rental websites. My husband is flying out about a month before we officially move up to secure a place for us to rent, but we are worried about trying to pay for a place without a Canadian bank account. We don't want to give cash to the landlord because it is untraceable and we are pretty sure no one will accept a check from a US bank. Has anyone had to deal with this before? Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks!

How to deal with fees for Canadian checks?

Banking question: I have a small business in the US, I live in the US, I'm a US citizen. A number of my clients are in Canada. Everytime they send me a check, my local bank has to take a flat $10 out of it - even if its in US funds. Most of these checks are less than $50, so that's a pretty big hit. Apparently this $10 fee is not just my bank, but from their processor. I know I could ask my clients to pay in paypal, but a lot of them aren't set up to do it that way, and I'm reluctant to make them change. I emailed a canadian bank, thinking I'd just mail a deposit off once a month, and then every few months transfer funds, but I need to be there in person to set up the account. Do I just need to insist that clients use paypal? Are there other options I'm not thinking of? Any advice would be welcome.

Can I make deposits to a CIBC account at any Canadian bank?

CanadianBanksFilter: This may seem like a bit of a dumb question, but can I deposit my money at ANY bank? I've got a CIBC account, but the closest CIBC is like an hour's walk away, and I don't have a car. Could I deposit stuff at, say, the Royal Bank?
