What's the best Yosemite camp ground for a group of 8 first time visitors? We want to do some day hikes, and we want to visit as many of the "must see" places as possible. We plan on going around the middle of August for 3-4 nights.

Summer isn't THAT far off . . . already trying to come up with camping/hiking spots in the Midwest for once it gets warm. Help! Looking for specific recommendations for spots in the IL/IA/WI area, plus whatever other random camping and backpacking tips you want to throw my way. Bonus points for places I can bring my dog, although I don't mind leaving her with my parents for a week either.

I would like to know a superior form of backpack. It should be primarily appropriate for day to day backpack and school usage but also useful for light travel use or light camping use. I am ~6'4", usually weigh about 185 pounds, and male.

My husband and I are thinking about taking a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado next summer. I want to stay close to wilderness, but we have little camping experience and no equipment at this time - I was kind of hoping for a rustic cabin experience nearby. I've read previous threads about this but many of the answers seem to be about experienced campers. Does anyone have any recommendations of where to stay or the easiest way to ease camping newbies into an out-west nature experience?

I am approaching Las Vegas Nevada from the east via car. Is there any car camping or backpacking in the mountains that ring Las Vegas where one can see the lights of the city, without setting foot in it?

Following up to
this question, my tent seam seal failed to stick down some of the taped seams that were coming untaped. Is it supposed to be able to stick them down or is that irrelevant as long as the seam seal goop absorbs into the stitching etc. I just thought that since when I bought the tent some of the taped seams were stuck down properly and some were peeling up, that maybe that was responsible for the leakage.

I have
this tent. The rainfly according to the box is polyester and the plastic window for the solar panel is PVC and the seams where the two materials join are 'taped'. (They are also stitched, whatever.) This seal between the two materials is leaking. Given the type of materials how do I patch this leak? (I have sprayed all interior seams with Silicone tent spray as instructed).

I have scored a week long wilderness trip. Hurrah for me. Except the last time I went camping was when I was, oh, 14. And I hated it.
This time, I'll be working as well as camping.
So my question to you, gentle woodsfolk of Metafilter, is what can I do to make my week in the wild productive and fun? Rather than the living hell I remember camping to be.

I’m looking for some help picking out a spot for a group camping trip in late September. Focused on NW NC because we haven’t camped there much. We’ve done lots around Mt Rogers in VA but looking for someplace new. Normally happy to explore on our own, but since I’m leading others along I would like pick a cool spot and have some prior sense of what we are getting into.

I'm looking for some good casual camping options near Boston, Ma (probably no more than a 2 hour drive). I've looked at a lot of sites that list camping places, but none that actually show ratings, or people's opinions. I don't have a 4WD vehicle, but usually like places that are a little more rustic, or out of the way. Camping isn't camping if you are with a thousand other people in a flat campground. As far as locations, I'd love to experience beach camping, forests, lakes, mountains... I'm really open to anything, but don't have any idea of where to start. It would just be nice to get out of the city with some friends on the weekends. Thanks for the help!

My 14 year old son and I want to get away to the mountains of VA and do some camping. What are some good campgrounds to serve as a base of operations for 2 or 3 days of hiking and fishing over Labor Day weekend? I'm looking for options close to day hike loop trails in the Shenandoah mountains. We're not rookie campers, however real life has cut our camping opportunities back severely the last couple of years. I don't have the equipment for overnighting from a backpack, so we'll be car camping.
