Easy protein-based options for camping food?

Next month I'm going on a two-week camping trip in New Zealand with Flying Kiwi, a tour company I've used before and enjoyed. My main gripe last time was the food: carbs, carbs, carbs all day long! Cereal and toast for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, and pasta and rice-based dinners most nights along with some beer and cider. I'm looking for easy protein-based alternatives that I can stash in my stuff and turn to whenever I need a break from the carb onslaught. [more inside]

A Vintage Bicycle Tour

I ran across a travelogue a while back of two young women going on a long bicycle tour in the Eastern U.S. in the 1930s or 1940s. I think they started from Pennsylvania or another nearby state and originally intended to go west, but ended up going south. On the return trip, I think they took a boat up the Mississippi or another major river. Does this ring a bell? [more inside]

Where to camp away from people?

We are looking to do a two night camping trip in the extreme northeast corner of Washington state. We would love to find a place to camp that is sort of remote- far enough away that we can have our dogs off leash, but close enough to a road to be able to pack in a decent amount of supplies. I have two questions: Is it legal to just drive up a mountain road and camp somewhere? Could we have a campfire without worrying about someone reporting us? We would avoid private property. Does anyone know of a place like this from personal experience? We would love to be by a lake.

Good camping near Sloquet BC?

Hello, going up to Sloquet hot springs (from Vancouver) for the fist time Thursday, and want to have a couple 'plan Bs' on hand in case it's full or the road is washed out or for whatever other reason. Anyone know of any other decent camping sites in that area?

Looking for an outdoor sound system for my camp at Burning Man.

My camp has this giant tarp on poles to protect us from the desert sun. My wife has decorated it romantically. Now I feel like it needs sound. Am I dreaming, wishing of speakers to put around the outside of our shade structure, pointing in? That don't cost a lot of money? That can withstand the sun? That have decent sound and some clear bass? That has an iPod dock? I have a generator for AC power, though a battery option would be nice (but not a requirement!) and I don't mind using speaker wire, so iwireless or not, fine with me.

Places to camp within a day's ride of Minneapolis?

Some friends and I - all new to the area - are looking for a good place to camp within a long day's bike ride of Minneapolis, MN (60-100mi). We're hoping for something where we'll see few other people, and preferably access to a lake or river, hiking trails, and general wilderness (or at least the feeling of being away from civilization for a bit), and good to stay for a couple of days. Any recommendations? I'm having a hard time with the signal to noise ratio of the rest of the internet. Thanks!

Civil War History Road Trip (with teens) suggestions?

Two moms, three home-educated early-teen boys, planning a learning adventure for two weeks at the end of August. Driving north from South Florida, which civil war sites/events should we not miss? Also looking for great not-too-primitive tent camping. So far all we know for sure is that we want to check out Gettysburg. We want to make it educational, but awesome and fun for our not-too-fascinated kids. Your suggestions welcome!

Inexpensive camp-like location for very small conference?

I'm looking for recommendations for a location in New York or southern New England to have a 3 day/2 night unconference for a 25-30 folks max, relatively close to transportation. Help us live in a tent this summer!

Starting in a month, my girlfriend and I will be living for the summer in a 10x16, two room Kelty tent we bought on craigslist. We will be living/working on a farm outside of Olympia, WA. We'd love any advice/experience you might have on long-term tent living. We're super excited about it but we are aware it will suck sometimes... what sucked about it and how can we prepare for the suck?
