Where to build a campfire in the UK?

Where can I go car camping close to London? Also would like to be able to make a campfire. Haven't camped since moving to the UK from US but it seems like most campsites here are big open fields in which a bunch of families pitch tents and campfires are typically not allowed. What I'm looking for is something a bit more similar to the US car camping style I'm used to i.e you drive to a campsite, you're assigned a somewhat private area among the trees and you can have a campfire. Essentially, something that looks like this:

Are there any places I can do this within a two or three hours drive from London?

"The night was dark, and also stormy..."

"Who's got a good ghost story?" This question has come up more than once in my life, usually while sitting around with friends in the dark. How do you guys respond to it?

I'd love to have a killer ghost story that would scare the bejeezus out of proper adults to hand, but I don't, and my searches for one have been fruitless. A literary ghost story isn't any good, I need a tale that is intended to be relayed orally. If anyone can point me to a repository of such stories, give me the outlines of a few or just give me tips on how to tell such stories well in this situation, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks.

How to locate a spot for a roaring campfire?

I live in the Portland, Oregon, area. Looking for a place away from the city lights where I and a few others can have a roaring campfire (nothing illegal going on), ideally in the middle of a field of corn under the stars, but you get the idea. Won't be camping there, just enjoying a campfire under the stars into the late evening. Don't have any friends who have a private piece of property in the country, and not interested in state parks or state camping areas. Suggestions on how to locate a spot other than knocking on someone's door???

Windows app that provides visual cue when sound is played?

I am looking for a Windows app that provides an onscreen visual cue when any sounds are played. It would be nice if the cue happened regardless of the status of the master mute. I'm having a tough time searching for this type of app without getting volume control widgets, etc.
The actual problem I am trying to solve is this. I am currently using Campfire at work. One issue that we have is the notifications for new messages get lost. The change of the titlebar is not noticeable enough, and our soundcards/speakers are tied up doing other things, so we don't have access to audio.

So I thought an app that visually indicated when sound was playing might solve the problem. Other thoughts:

we really want Pyro for windows

Some greasemonkey script that does is able to detect new messages and do something

I've seen stuff like Netjaxer and Bubbles, but they don't seem to expose enough to hook into specific events that I need (either and new message, or the sound)

Any ideas, MeFi'ers?

On which beaches can I have a campfire?

This weekend (Friday, actually, hopefully before the rain), we will be taking 6 kids out for a campfire on the beach. The problem is that we don't know where we can do this. We live in Marin County, north of SF, and would prefer a place up here. Any place here or in SF will do, though. Any recommendations? Any thoughts on where I should look to find out if we can have a beach campfire?
