I live in the Portland, Oregon, area. Looking for a place away from the city lights where I and a few others can have a roaring campfire (nothing illegal going on), ideally in the middle of a field of corn under the stars, but you get the idea. Won't be camping there, just enjoying a campfire under the stars into the late evening. Don't have any friends who have a private piece of property in the country, and not interested in state parks or state camping areas. Suggestions on how to locate a spot other than knocking on someone's door???

I am looking for a Windows app that provides an onscreen visual cue when any sounds are played. It would be nice if the cue happened regardless of the status of the master mute. I'm having a tough time searching for this type of app without getting volume control widgets, etc. [more inside]

This weekend (Friday, actually, hopefully before the rain), we will be taking 6 kids out for a campfire on the beach. The problem is that we don't know where we can do this. We live in Marin County, north of SF, and would prefer a place up here. Any place here or in SF will do, though. Any recommendations? Any thoughts on where I should look to find out if we can have a beach campfire?
