Do you live near a camp-meeting town?

I have an ongoing research project to document and map locations of camp meetings, which originate in 19th century religious revivals. I've mapped more than 50 (listed inside), including some famous ones like Oak Bluffs, MA, Bay View, MI, and Indian Springs, GA, and am now looking for others. I'm interested in three kinds of sites: current active camp-meetings that still operate as a religious camp or revival; "legacy" sites where the camp meeting evolved into a town or incorporated secular association; and defunct sites where a camp once was before being abandoned. Any and all links, vague memories, and coordinates welcome! [more inside]

Custom printed bandanas?

For our Boozy Summer Camp-themed wedding, soon-to-be-Mr. Dorinda and I want to get bandanas with our made-up camp logo printed on them to give out to our campers/guests in their welcome baggies. We'd also like to not spend a gazillion dollars on what is in the grand scheme of things an incredibly minor part of our shindig. [more inside]

Best tent, backpack, sleeping bag for moderate weather?

I'm hiking out into the wild with a friend this autumn, and it's been decades since I last bought gear. I need a two-man tent, sleeping bag, backpack and other stuff. This won't be extreme camping, around 35-55°F at night, 3-4 days max. I'm looking for lightweight, durable, comfortable. Suggestions?

Should we send a kid who gets night terrors to summer camp?

The Area Family is already discussing our summer plans and we would like to send the oldest kid, the 9-year-old boy, to an overnight summer camp (aka sleepaway camp.) However, he gets night terrors sometimes, and we worry about how that would work at camp. Does anyone have advice on whether to send him to camp or how to do it? I'd particularly welcome insight from those who worked at camps or those who know campers in a similar situation. (We are also going to talk to the pediatrician about this soon.) [more inside]

Tent for the liftgate of my minivan

I want to make a tent that goes over the opened lift gate (hatchback?) of my minivan. The ones I've seen are expensive, and I have an old tent, plus a couple of old tent flies and some mesh screen. The tent acts as an extension of the van and allows in air. Could also be used as privacy space for the camping potty. So, ideas and suggestions for making it as good as possible? Have you ever made your own tent? [more inside]

No tug of war or tug of clique

I would like suggestions for a summer camp for adolescents that is NOT sports-oriented or competitive in any way. Should be a place with good arts and creative activities, and most important, that actively fosters a culture of social acceptance, kindness, tolerance for quirk. I'm looking for the east coast. I know about many camps on paper, but would like to also hear experiences your kids or you have had at specific camps that sound like this.

Looking for an amazingly campy dance sequence from an old movie.

I saw an old clip on cable a while back and can't find it again. It featured what I think was a young Buddy Ebsen, though it could have been another actor who was later famous as an older man. The clip was in black and white, I believe the principal dancers were in sailor suits, and the song was something like "keep it gay" or "make it gay" but it was definitely not the song/dance sequence from The Producers. Does this ring a bell for anyone?

Summer camp movies/video for the innocent

My 6 year old has really been enjoying books about kids at summer camp, and would like to see a movie in that setting. However, most of the ones I've turned up so far (Meatballs, Wet Hot American Summer, Scooby Doo Camp, even Parent Trap) are too scary or adult for her. Any recommendations for a really mild camp movies? It doesn't matter if this is a feature film or not -- we are wide open to webseries, TV episodes, etc. [more inside]

Adult beginner soccer training/camps in the U.S.?

Adult beginner soccer training/camps in the U.S.? I'm a relatively new player (started a couple of years ago). I play on a couple of teams, but as fun as games are they're just not the best way to develop basic skills; I really need a structured practice environment and feedback. I'm considering going to this camp, but I'm wondering if there's anything similar in the U.S. (Google turns up a bunch of camps for kids, but very few for adults, and even fewer for adult beginners.) West Coast would be best, but I'm willing (obviously) to travel further afield if need be.

Since this isn't exactly the most wrappable gift, and we are doing the gift-exchange thing in front of his entire family, please help me find the most awesome way to present this gift to him! I'm totally cool with suggestions that necessitate other purchases as long as the cost is fairly minimal (say, <$100). (Anon as he is an avid reader of ask.me)
