Help me find the right AV equipment to buy for my cultural events nonprofit! I throw literary events that are awesome and generally undocumented. Tell me what I should buy (cameras, software, mics) to visually convey a sense of their awesomeness. Bonus points on tutorials on making podcasts and workflow process for videos. [more inside]

What's the best digital camera to take environmental photos with? We're looking to purchase a new camera and am considering spending between $1000-$1500 total. We take many photos of the wilderness, lakes, mountains, etc... Since we do a lot of backpacking, we would like it to be somewhat compact. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I'm looking for a camera (or video camera w/ still-shot capability) that can do a NIFTY thing my Pencam can do, but with better image quality: I can set up my Pencam in a remote location connected to my PC via a cable, for example focused on some birds at a birdfeeder outside the window, and I can preview on my PC monitor what the Pencam sees & then take a pic with a mouseclick when the timing is right. Any chance?

My Nikon D40 died recently. I sent it to Nikon for a repair estimate. I'm looking for any experience anyone has with having Nikon repair a camera -- and weighing that against putting the repair money toward a new camera body. If I want to go with something new, I need help with selection. More details within! [more inside]

Camera Noob Filter - I like taking pictures and I find that I like taking them a lot lately. My boyfriend is in a band and I love taking pictures of their shows but I can't get great shots in low - light with my Sony point and shoot.
Any suggestions on a camera that isn't the full-blown DSLR but not point and shoot that will give me great low light shots as well daylight shots?

Saw a commercial this morning about 7AM EST - I think it was on the Today show - it was apparently a camera fixed on a guy's face who was skydiving. I saw in on my HD TV - it was a beautiful, crystal clear, professional looking shot. The guy pulled his parachute, and then they showed this camera, and the tag-line was "Be a professional" or something. What was the name of the camera? Did anyone catch this?

I am putting together a proposal for my English class. It proposes that cameras should be required in meat processing plants all along the "dissemble" line, and broadcast "to the public somehow," (probably via web-feed or something) . Is there such a thing, in any law, in any jurisdiction (even outside of the U.S.)? [more inside]

Ok this is may sound like a weird one...
Basically I'm building an outdoor enclosure for a panning/tilting webcam that has IR lighting built into it. It was going to be all sides Lexan, to keep things simply and neat looking.
I learned, midstream of course, that the Lexan/Plexiglass/glass all reflect IR light like crazy so you just see a beautiful ring of IR lights and not what's outside the box when viewing the stream.
I'm told a UV filter might work, embedded in the front of the enclosure. The challenges are: [more inside]

Can you please recommend your favourite Digital Video Camera? Key features: inexpensive, compatible to quickly upload the data to a mac, internal microphone. A friend is planning to record interviews and possibly some classroom activities, not record a feature film. it doesn't need a whole lot of bells and whistles; bonus points if it's small-ish. thank you!

Yes, it's true, there are still Luddites out here using 35mm film. The local concern which still develops films charges a queen's ransom to do so. Can anyone recommend a mail-in film developing lab which does good quality work, is reliable and is at least somewhat reasonable as far as price? (Costco in this area has stopped taking film...sigh).
(can't think of any snowflakes to add).

I read some time ago about new point and shoot cameras that are great for taking pictures at night. I believe they didn't have the same mirror system that typical cameras have, thereby making non-flash pictures turn out clearer. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I'm hoping to find a great camera to take out at night to take pictures without annoying people with a flash.
