How did premodern universities, schools, convents, etc., work? This question is a bit confused as in formulating it I realized I was confused, but I will do my best! It came up when I was reading a fantasy novel and the novel was clearly "the author went to 20th century American college and just retrojected that on his imaginary medieval world." But what was it really like? I'm looking for the history of teaching, I think, and not just in universities. [more inside]
I'm driving to visit some friends in Cambridge, MA next weekend, near Central Square. I'll need somewhere to park my car while I'm there (3 nights). How hard is it to find parking for a few days within, say, a 30-minute walk from Central Square? [more inside]
I'll be moving to Boston/Cambridge in September for my first job! Help me find a neighborhood in which to search for housing, and feel free to share any tips for a transplant from the west coast (the San Francisco Bay Area). [more inside]
I'm going to be commuting from Cambridgeport to Watertown for three months starting in September. I don't have a car and my current plan is to bike along the river (about 50 minutes), which is fine but I'm not super excited about showing up to work disheveled or having to budget lots of extra time for showering/primping at work. Are there any grape-viney rideshare matching services in the Boston metro area that I've missed in my searches so far? [more inside]
I'm going to Boston/Cambridge later this month and have pretty much everything planned except where to shop. Any favorite quirky/eclectic places I should be sure to stop by while I'm there? [more inside]
My wife and I are currently driving a moving truck to the Boston area. We were supposed to arrive at a storage facility to unload some things by 6pm and return the truck to Uhaul this evening, but we won't make it to the storage facility in time. So now we need a place to park the 15' truck overnight. Does anyone know who can take our money and let us do this in the Boston/Cambridge/Somerville area tonight? [more inside]
Trying to find an apartment in the Boston area is pretty tough. I search Craigslist and PadMapper for rental listings once a day at least. Then, yesterday, I had the thought of asking a local parenting listserve and received some great responses. What are some other unusual or alternative ways to search for (no broker fee) apartments in Cambridge, MA? [more inside]
I'm visiting my boyfriend in the Cambridge/Boston area, and am trying to plan a fun date night. I'm vegetarian, and he's gluten free, dairy free, and has some other allergies. I'm very happy with cheese and nice cocktails, he's usually happy with fish or chicken and cooked green things. Any ideas of a good Friday night place? [more inside]
Two or so years ago, I read the beginning of a biography of a writer, probably a poet. I know he was a young man in England during World War I who was not able to serve in the war due to a medical condition. But that is all I am certain about -- I have vague memories of a few further details that I could easily be confusing with stories from other people's lives, or even from novels. [more inside]
Am looking for suggestions for a nice restaurant in Boston/Cambridge that is vegetarian friendly. Am looking to get a gift cert for dinner for 4, 2 of whom are vegetarian, so looking for somewhere with more than a token pasta primevera or grilled asparagus on the menu. Budget up to $100 per person including wine. [more inside]
My wife and I live with our 20 month old daughter in Cambridge, MA and we're researching options for moving to the suburbs. We live in Inman Square and love what we have but want to (affordably) have some more living and outdoor space. Which communities in the Boston area should we consider? [more inside]
I'm a US person currently living in the UK, specifically Cambridge, and this is the first election I've been present for. I like to watch election coverage on TV in a pub with a bunch of left-leaning politically-clued-in people. I've sampled a lot of Cambridge pubs and I've noticed that among their many charms is an absence of televisions. Is there a place where I can watch election coverage over a pint (or several)? The closer to the city centre the better, but I'm not picky.
Can you recommend a good therapist in the Somerville/Cambridge area? Near Union Square or Harvard Square a bonus. [more inside]
Heading to East Anglia for a couple weeks in late May; have lined up Cambridge (Scott Polar Research Institute!) followed by Cromer and the north Norfolk coast, Holkham, King's Lynn. Any local six-fingered denizens with suggestions for off-beat or interesting things to do and see? [more inside]
I will be in Boston next Saturday and Sunday. I would like to eat delicious mid-priced food, visit bookstores and museums, see beautiful local features and possibly shop for accessories. I would also like to ride the T, because I love the T, at least when it's running. What do you recommend? [more inside]
I'm about to try to find a place to live in Cambridge, England. What neighbourhoods would be a good fit for me? [more inside]
My otherwise-sensible partner has an inexplicable fondness for the Oregon Ducks and would like to watch them duke it out with Ohio State in the upcoming championship, but our internet is mostly down and we don't have a TV. Where in Cambridge/Somerville can we hang out and watch the game tonight (Monday)? The quieter the better; I have some sensory issues and don't do so well in noisy, crowded spaces. Near Central would be great, but we have a car and can roam farther afield if the roads stay decent.
I've had a lot of pad thai around here, and pretty much all of it has been mediocre - kind of bland and flavorless. In comparison, I've had mind-meltingly delicious pad thai in Thailand (Chiang Mai and Koh Tao) that was bursting with sweet and sour and salty flavors all at once. I particularly remember the sweet cane sugar mixing with the sour tamarind in an intense, lovely way. Where can I get really really good, authentic pad thai in the Boston area? Ideally that would deliver to Davis Square. [more inside]
I'd like to purchase an antique map (or a good reproduction) as a Christmas present, and I'm having trouble figuring out where to shop. [more inside]
This is a looooooong shot. But apparently there was a children's book in the 70s about children feeding the white geese at Magazine Beach in Cambridge, MA. Don't know the author or title. Ring any bells?
Visiting Boston this weekend, and asked my friends to take me to see MIT and Harvard, but they haven't been there either. What is there to see or do that'll mean having a good time? [more inside]
Cambridge, MA's Alewife MBTA station: how much does a monthly parking pass cost? The MBTA's vendor site has all the clarity and customer service that you'd expect-- I need to register and provide a credit card number before they'll tell me the price and I just want a number. Thanks!
Can anyone recommend a part-time mother's helper that can get to North Cambridge? We want extra support for a week in taking care of this guy. The mom will be at home, and we want to reduce the chances that she gets overwhelmed, starting this Wednesday, after his grandma goes home, and I go back to work.
I'm a recent Camberville transplant from a place that was more in the "trees that happen to have nearby houses" department rather than the "houses that happen to have nearby trees" department. I'm looking for pleasant places for, say, 3-10 mile rambles where I can forget for a bit that I am not cut out for city life. A few additional constraints within. [more inside]
Please introduce me to the institutions, places, publications, and other tips, tricks, and shibboleths that will help me to hit the ground running when I relocate to Boston. [more inside]

I just got a barkcloth jumpsuit that's in need of some alterations. I'm looking for a tailor in the Cambridge/Somerville area that could help me out with this. The tailor my friends keep recommending to me is in Roslindale, and the tailors I've found via Yelp have worked exclusively in menswear. Who's a good tailor on this side of the river that works with womens wear and could help me out with my vintage find?
I am considering moving for a job in Cambridge MA. I know nothing about the neighborhoods, and need help. [more inside]
We are buying a house -yay! But the house needs renovation work done - eek! While we have previously owned a house, it was 10 years ago, in another state, and never had any major renovations. We are scheduled to close on April 30, so we are trying to figure out what kinds of professionals we need and how to find/hire them. [more inside]
I will be subleasing my room in Cambridge (MA) and subletting in DC this summer. I know next to nothing about subleasing/subletting in either place and have many questions, including how to price my somewhat strangely set-up room. [more inside]
I like to have a glass of whisky and read and write on weekday evenings. I'm looking for quiet bars (or licensed cafes) where I can hole up with a laptop and/or book. Does such a thing exist? [more inside]
Hi all, I am moving from Cambridge to Providence on Sunday morning. I'll be picking up a 16 foot truck from Penske at 436 Riverside Ave in Medford at around 8:30am that morning, and driving it to Harvard Square, probably to Linden St between Mass Ave and Mt. Auburn. And once it's loaded, on to Providence. I need help knowing whether I need a permit, and about the best way to drive the truck through the streets of Medford, Somerville and Cambridge. [more inside]
I'm looking for a tried-and-true recipe for creamy Greek salad dressing. When I lived in the Boston area, the Greek salads I got from my neighborhood Greektalian pizza places (like Aram's #2), as well as from the small local pizza chain Upper Crust, came with a wonderful creamy, tangy dressing. Here in California and everywhere else in the country as far as I can tell, Greek salads come with a vinaigrette-type dressing, and searching for Greek salad dressing recipes returns nothing but vinaigrettes as well. I've spent some time experimenting with ingredients, but I'm hoping someone here is familiar with this type of dressing and has a good, tried-and-true recipe. Are you? Do you? I'm looking for recipes only, please, not suggestions for what might be in the dressing.
What is the legal and/or good behavior when you are riding a bike and come upon a pedestrian crosswalk (no lights) and want to cross the street? What about as a rider who is riding on that street, and there are other riders right behind you, and you see the person trying to cross the street? I'm in Somerville, MA, very close to the Cambridge border. [more inside]
Help me find this science fiction book set in Boston involving a volcano crater. A long time ago, I read the first chapter of a science fiction book set in Boston and Cambridge where the premise was that the greater Boston area was located on an extinct volcano crater. For the life of me, I can't remember its title, and Google is failing me. [more inside]
For the longest time I have been doing some kind of lifting or mild strength training (benching or pushups, curls, etc. mostly free weights) and am in fairly decent but skinny shape. At the moment I am regularly running 5 to 8 miles every other day and, without access to a gym, doing my darnedest to wing it with the free weights I have and pushups. I am looking to put on a good amount of muscle and am willing to put in the time and effort if I can find an approachable and worthwhile gym. Some googling suggests Total Performance Sports might be worth a look. I am a male in my 20s and I'm hoping to do a couple weeks of personal training to help get a routine down. Any suggestions, Hivemind?
Bostonians/Cantibridgians/Somervillagers: Know anywhere to get a WICKED AWESOME haircut for around 60 bucks? Bonus points for being near inman. Not looking for anything crazy-fashion, just something easy to take care of, chic, doesn't require blowdrying, bonus points if it has a slimming effect. (if you have anything specific to suggest along these lines, send me a picture!) Don't mind waiting a bit for an appointment, but probably not more than a month.
My husband of sixteen years and I are going through an amicable divorce. Our six-year old son seemed to be dealing with it very well for the past year but now we're about to sell the family home he seems to have broken down, resorting to mild self-harm and not eating, saying he hates himself because he is stupid. The school psychologist has suggested he might benefit from seeing a therapist. Can you recommend someone great, ideally in Somerville or Cambridge? Throwaway email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Help! I think I might have ADD. Does that sound right, Internet? I know you're not doctors and can't diagnose me over the Internet. Can you help me find a place to get tested (and treated if appropriate) in Cambridge, MA? [more inside]
I'll be in Cambridge for a few hours tomorrow with my dog and am looking for some places to enjoy together. [more inside]
Have any recommendations for a quality t-shirt screen printer in Kendall Square? [more inside]
So it's time for us to put our son on the pre-school waiting list in the City of Cambridge. Except we are close to three possible schools and there are no ranks, no preferences - if the school is on the list and there is space, you must take it. We don't know anyone whose kids have gone to any of these preschools, Morse, Kings, King Open, etc. So throwing this out to askmefi: if you have any experiences with preschools in Cambridge, MA, please share! I am particularly concerned about provider availability to children, sensitivity to allergy/nutrition concerns, diversity, gender roles enforcement ("You can't cry, you're a boy." "Girls can't play with cars.") and relationships among the parents of the children.
I live in Cambridge, MA and share a two-bedroom apt with one roommate. We are women in our early 30's. I've been in the home for 2.5 years, with a different roommate each year. I loved my first two roommates. I invited my current roommate to move in this past Sept (met her through Craig's List) and we're a good fit. I have a sudden, burning urge to move into my own (1 bedroom) apt. Do I ask her permission, or just tell her I'm moving? [more inside]
We just adopted a dog and and are looking for a good dog walker in Cambridge, MA to take out him out four times a week. We're new to the area and don't know other dog owners who could recommend someone, so we're at the mercy of Yelp. We live in the Inman Square neighborhood of Cambridge. Any suggestions would be very welcome!
I have NYC-Boston down to a science. Now please help me figure out the other end of my trip to the suburbs in a sane fashion. [more inside]
Dear Hive Mind! I have succeeded at finding guitar lessons and failed at finding drum lessons in this area here before, so let's try a third instrument: I want to learn piano in the Somerville area. I love both classical and jazz. Somerville is best, the T is fine, I can car if necessary. I am a rank beginner; more on that below. [more inside]
A guy hit my car parked on the street in Cambridge, MA, causing some damage (to the car only, I wasn't around). He left a note. I called him and he wanted to bypass our insurance providers. Please advise. [more inside]
