The future Mrs. timing and I have been pondering where & how we'd like to get married. One of the options we're considering is a destination wedding in or near the coastal redwoods in northern California (around Crescent City and Eureka). The catch is that we live in Chicago.

Last night, I felt my very first earthquake! It was a baby, 4.4, no damage done. In fact, what woke me up was an alarm-- not a car alarm, more like the rhythmic buzzing of a very loud alarm clock-- accompanied with flashing lights. It seemed to be coming from another building. What was this? Is there such a thing as post-earthquake alert? I live in LA Ktown, btw, in a 1930s building.

Our condo in California is being sold at a short sale. We lived in the house for two years, our landlord loves us, but he has another house and it sounds like he's "underwater" on both houses. We've offered to buy the place, but everything I've read here and elsewhere on the interwebs make short sales sound like a tremendous nightmare. We really don't want to move. What are our rights, what should our strategy be? We've never owned a house before - help!

Alexander "Sasha" Shulgin is primarily credited with the popularization of MDMA, also known as Ecstacy. But he was actually introduced to it by a woman named Merrie Kleinman, who was reportedly a graduate student in the medicinal chemistry group Shulgin advised at San Francisco State University. Whatever happened to Merrie (Meredith?) Kleinman? The Interwebs have little information about her.

Thanks to riding Chicago's L system so often I can sense my stop in my (literal) sleep, I think I'm finally ready to tackle Los Angeles' underutilized & unappreciated
Metro & Metrolink system for some day trips between Ventura County and LA proper. What are some can't miss attractions that are A) easily accessable by rail in a city of cars and B) fairly safe for a tiny semi-lost solo female and C) totally awesome?

I currently live in San Francisco where I use WebPass, which I adore. It's by far the best ISP I've ever had: cheap, lightning-fast, and impeccable customer service.
Now I am moving to the East Bay, and I need a new provider. I'm a really heavy internet user, so this is an important decision for me –--- please help me make a good one.

I moved into a house with some friends in Los Angeles California, we all split the deposit (shared was $700 each), things got weird and I moved out with the person moving into my room agreeing to pay my share of the deposit. That was a year ago and promises of "in the fall" have now gone silent. What do I do now?

Need help finding a really unique wedding/reception venue in Southern California that melds cultures! Although my fiancee and I are very similar culturally, we are also very different. Neither of us are religious, but she comes from a Muslim background, and I Hindu. She is of Pakistani origin, and I Indian. And of course, in the end we are both American. So we are trying to find a unique California venue that captures all of that.

Any ideas?

A friend got a notice of foreclosure on a house on which he's made regular payments for over a decade. It's in Sonoma County, California; he's lived in and owned the house since the late 90s. I've advised him to lawyer up, and tomorrow will help investigate what pro bono attorneys are available to him. He has little money; his home is his wealth. Meanwhile, maybe someone here has been in this position and can provide a roadmap?
