My boyfriend and I are moving to San Francisco for his work. I'm in the middle of a second bachelor's degree in biochemistry/fulfilling premedical requirements. I'd like to enroll at the City College (community college) for a year and then transfer to a university after I've established residency. This will be fine, right? My girlfriend has a relatively specific request for Valentine's Day: "an outdoor restaurant at a vineyard... that has an attached hotel." A somewhat cheaper version of

I recently moved from California to Colorado, then acquired a new car. Meanwhile, my California registration on the old car expired. I want to sell the old car in Colorado, but it has no current registration and was never registered in this state. How can I take people on test drives? Just risk it? Is signing over the California title sufficient, then it's their job to get the car registered?

There are some nice stairs with some sculptures on them across from my apartment (leading up to a parking garage), open to the public. People and security guards sit there and lounge and smoke cigarettes frequently (I can see from my apartment) However when I sit there or smoke cigarettes there, a security guard always tells me it is closed (no matter what time, most recently 4:30PM on a Saturday, sometimes after work like 6:30 on a Tuesday) and I cannot sit there. But isn't it public space?

You are not my tax advisor, but... We're a same-sex married couple in California, trying to make heads or tails out of the (confusing) IRS tax-filing pickle that is in effect for the 2010 tax year. We have to combine our community income, split it in two, add any individual income to the respective partner's form, and then create two separate forms for the IRS for each of us, but check the "single" category for filing status. Here's the dilemma: He gets a W2 (salaried employee). I freelance (several 1099s and a Schedule C). Do I have to duplicate the entire Schedule C across both forms, and put half of each deduction on my form and half on his? :-0 Or do I do the full deductions on my form and fill in something on the adjustment line (line 21, I think it is) on his 1040 form as a way of evening out the reporting?

So I've lived in beautiful San Francisco, California since 2005, but I've recently started a job down in Sunnyvale. I can take Caltrain down there, but it's an hour's trip plus half an hour on either end to get from home/work to the Caltrain station in question. This is not sustainable, so I'd like to move south. I'm 31, single, and a city boy from way back, so moving to The Suburbs gives me pause. Also, I sold the only car I've ever owned back in '05 shortly after I moved here. So I have two questions:

I was recently pulled over for having expired tags. The police officer gave me a fix it ticket for the tags, but he also gave me a ticket to schedule a court date for a misdemeanor charge of driving in California with an out-of-state drivers license.
I looked up the legalities, and the California DMV does state that you need to get a new drivers license after 10 days of being in the state of California. I have been driving with my Idaho license here for over a year.
I have scheduled the court date and now I am worried. Is there anything I can do to get out of this? What would be my best course of action?
