We would like to rent a place for a week-long family Christmas and are trying to decide on a location. We have three groups of people: two adults in Oakland, California; two adults and four children near Salt Lake City; and one adult in Michigan. The children range in age from two to eleven, and the place has to be driving distance from Salt Lake, as the Salt Lake group can't afford to fly six people. Plus we want to keep costs down as much as possible. Other considerations inside. [more inside]
My wife and I are going on vacation early in September and would like to focus on fine dining. We live in the bay area and have been up to Sonoma/Napa many times as well as Portland and would like to broaden our horizons. Looking for both locations and restaurant recommendations. [more inside]
I will be visiting Los Angeles in September for the first time and staying for a week. I'm soliciting opinions on places to go and see while I am there. I enjoy photography so any scenic places would be first on my list. Thanks!
Hivemind!, Previously, you helped me plan a killer trip up to Joshua Tree by pointing me to Kate's Lazy Desert (A+++!). Now I've got about a week before I start a new job and the lady friend and I are looking to make our way up the Cali coast in search of the perfect chill. There are plenty of travel guides, but I always prefer a personal touch. We'll be departing from LA and happy to see anything north from there! More inside. [more inside]
The husband, the baby and I are flying to LA for a week on very short notice (Saturday). I'll be busy for most of the days; he'll be bopping around with the kid (and is familiar with the area). We'll have one full day for fun together. Ideas and tips? [more inside]
We are moving to the East Coast at the end of the summer. We currently live in the West (Canada). This summer will be our last chance to vacation on this side of the continent. Help me decide whether to pick Las Vegas or somewhere in California in the last week of July. Difficulties: must be super fun for our four-year-old daughter. No Disney (too expensive). [more inside]
Help me discover a place in the greater Bay Area I can go for a few days to focus on a writing project. [more inside]
I need to quickly firm up planning for our August vacation in Oregon and Northern California; we have about 10 days to spend and I haven't gotten very as far in terms of specifics. Degree of Difficulty: 16yo daughter and non-drinking husband [more inside]
I've got a wife, two small kids, a dog (although the dog doesn't always come with us), and an insatiable urge to get the hell out of LA in July. Where should we go? We'd like to rent a house in an area that's not too pricey but still nice and clean. Has to be within, say, a 4 hour drive of LA. Near the beach is a plus. Maybe not completely swamped with people is a plus. Are there any hidden gems, or should we just go to Santa Barbara like everyone else?
Is the ongoing drought a good reason to postpone a planned summer trip to Northern California to another year? We were thinking of spending a week around SF/Napa/Sonoma in August. Interested in things like parks/hiking, wineries, farmers markets.
Boyfriend and I are planning a round trip (by rental car) through California and the Southwest and we'd love some input on the first rough draft of the route. We're going for 23 days in September next year and would like to stay in fairly affordable hotels and motels (no camping). [more inside]
I want to treat my lovely bf to a weekend getaway somewhere within a few hours flying distance from the PNW. Details inside. [more inside]
My large family (it's going to be between 10 and 14 people - not sure yet) wants to gather for a few days at Christmastime. Money is an issue for some of us and so we can't do more than three nights. Understandably, most of the available rentals that would accommodate a group our size are in high demand areas, and they want a longer holiday stay than we can afford (and in many cases more money per night.) The thing is, we can be totally flexible with location. Anywhere in California between, say, Santa Rosa and San Luis Obispo would be fine, as long as it isn't snowy in December (ruling out the Tahoe area.) [more inside]
We're celebrating our 20th anniversary this summer (yay!) and we're trying to find a place to stay for a week in the western/northwestern US to celebrate this milestone. The catch is that this destination needs to be some place new to us. A few other particular requirements below the fold. [more inside]
Planning a vacation in California in May and was thinking I would like to do some cycling and see a bit of scenery. Sonoma and Yosemite seem attractive options, but where to stay and hire bikes? How many days should I set aside for this? I could be in the San Francisco area for ten days or so. [more inside]
My 40th birthday present to myself is to run away for several days by myself to indulge in restful solitude, nature walks, spa treatments and room service. I live in Oregon and am considering the coast, but could also be talked into Washington/California, or places other than the beach. Price is no object, but would prefer it to be within driving distance of Portland. Requirements and preferences within... [more inside]
My friend who has never been to the US has four weeks for an epic road trip/vacation. The catch: it's in July. What are the must see sights that won't induce heatstroke? [more inside]
I loved the "show me the hidden side of L.A." question. But I'm gonna be visiting its mild-mannered southern cousin, San Diego. Show me the hidden side of THAT! [more inside]

Planning our vacation to California for the end of August and looking for suggestions on what will impress our 16 y.o. son and 13 and 12 y.o. daughters. We'll fly in to LA and out San Francisco, or vice-versa, and rent a vehicle for the week. So far, Alcatraz and Universal are on the list, but I'm not sure what other plans to make. What can you recommend?
Help me enjoy 5 weeks of California endulgence after living in the Middle East! [more inside]
I'm going to be in Nevada City, California for work next week, and I'm planning to add on an extra personal day or two to the trip. What town to stay in for the personal day to best enable fun activities, and what to do? [more inside]
What are some awesome stops along the way from LA to SF for a weekend road trip? [more inside]
Thanks to riding Chicago's L system so often I can sense my stop in my (literal) sleep, I think I'm finally ready to tackle Los Angeles' underutilized & unappreciated Metro & Metrolink system for some day trips between Ventura County and LA proper. What are some can't miss attractions that are A) easily accessable by rail in a city of cars and B) fairly safe for a tiny semi-lost solo female and C) totally awesome? [more inside]
My family is going on a trip to San Francisco this spring (March 27-April 3). We're staying at the Grand Hyatt on Stockton Street. Food/Activity recommendations would be greatly appreciated! [more inside]

Driving from San Diego, CA -> Yuma, AZ in early Febuary to spend a week in Yuma and then returning to San Diego. As our flight comes in early in the morning we're thinking of hitting the San Diego Zoo or Birch Aquarium before heading to Arizona. Suggestions on places to see/go either along the route or within a couple hours drive of Yuma?
