Thinking about heading to California for a week or so, starting out in Los Angeles then driving up to San Francisco. [more inside]
First time I've ever had to smog a car. It did not go well for the car's previous owner. I just got a ton of repairs done on it, but what else do I have to do first? [more inside]
I’m a school psychologist from the Northeast who’s looking to move to a city in California. Problem is I don’t know a thing about where to choose. Are there cities/regions in the state that I’d like to live in more than others? [more inside]
Asking for a friend who found these in his Los Angeles backyard:
Trying to get about $900 of missing wages paid. Should I go through small claims court or file a missing wages claim with California's Division of Labor Standards Enforcement? [more inside]
There is a pile of raw sewage in my bathroom due to a blocked pipe in the apartment complex I live in. The pipe is shared by multiple units. Landlord is refusing to properly deal with situation. [more inside]
Need to move my mother from SLC (Utah) to LA (CA). Don't want to risk driving her aging car on the highways in July for fear of a mechanical breakdown or worse. Moving company quoted us $900-1000 to add car to the moving experience. Uship.com finds quotes from many services who offer car transport for considerably less. Does anyone have any recommendations, particularly with car transport companies to trust (and others to avoid)? [more inside]
Can anyone help identify this design (I know it was at least used on sheets and wallpaper, if not more products)? This is a design on a product line that has since been discontinued. I'd like to know who used to sell these products and how to find them. Thanks! [more inside]
We're going to Paso this weekend! There's some recs on the Green from 8 years ago but many tasting rooms have closed and opened since then. What's your favorite winery to visit in the Paso area? (If you have a favorite coffee shop in San Luis Obispo that would be great to know too!)
Looking for suggestions for cool/quirky places to see in an afternoon at Newport Beach (history, nerdy, technology, walks/views, etc.). I'll probably head down towards the beach, and take it from there. Bike rental is a possibility. Cheap-ish (non-fancy) seafood and Asian places would be appreciated. I could also stand a $20-25 cab ride each way to somewhere interesting. Thank you! [more inside]
I'll be attending a conference in March, and staying at Newport Beach (Specifically the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa). I'll be interested in checking out the beach, getting a few good meals, and getting beers after the conference. Is that sort of thing walkable, or should I consider renting a car? [more inside]
Before I can finally move from the 'burbs to Oakland, I need to shed some (all?) of my furniture. It's decent quality and was fairly pricey when initially purchased but none of it is antique or unique. (Think Restoration Hardware and Room and Board.) So I would like to sell it if possible. But my job and travel schedule mean that I really can't do it myself. Hopefully the hivemind can recommend someone that can help!
I was stupid and put off getting a new ID (after a cross-country move, to the bay area in California) after my old one expired. I have a flight on the 18th. What do I do? [more inside]
I just got a new job in Sacramento and will be relocating there next month from Washington. (Yikes! That's soon!) Should I bring everything (furniture-wise) with me or is there a good furniture consignment place there? Also, anything a dog owner should know? [more inside]
We want to drive from Contra Costa County, CA, to Anglicon 2015 in Seattle. We'd like an interesting drive up and back down that balances sights and time, and would like to hit Portland along the way (and maybe tiptoe into Canada after Seattle). We have lots of specific requests, so we'd love some help. [more inside]
Sweetie and I are in the market for a used car in California. We found, via a used car display agency, a car that we both like. Difficulty level: Private seller, plates and registration from South Carolina. Can you help us figure out what our fees will be and how they might differ if the car were registered in California? [more inside]
Can I bring California bay laurel branches to Arizona without potentially causing an ecological problem? [more inside]
Are an out-of-state license and a social security card enough to establish "birth date and legal presence" for the California DMV? [more inside]
I'll be spending a few days in the San Francisco Bay Area this coming weekend. My wife will be remaining at home. What gift should I get for her? [more inside]
It's been well over 20 years since I lived in the Bay Area, and my memory is hazy, at best. I'm looking for the names of two specific establishments that I can vaguely remember from the early 1990s. [more inside]
In a few months, I'll be turning 26 and kicked off my dad's policy. [more inside]
My out-of-state driver's license expires mid-August. I'd like to a get a new one before then, but the "next available appointment" on the DMV website is at the end of August. How likely am I, in San Francisco, California, to be able to get this done without an appointment? What times should I go, to maximize this likelihood? [more inside]
My partner and I currently live in PA. Before moving here from CA, my partner sold a vehicle to a private party (I was not a part of this transaction). That guy never registered the vehicle and collected a ton of tickets.. which he never paid. The state of CA just auto-deducted over $800 from his bank account to cover these tickets. Rent is due next week, and our landlord is kind of a drag. We're a little overwhelmed. This is terrible! What happens now?
My partner and I are headed to California in August and have 2 days to ourselves. We're both very avid hikers and are interested in seeing redwoods. Help us plan an awesome 2 day hike between San Jose/Sonoma! [more inside]
I'll soon be flying to the Bay Area in order to attend a memorial service. My schedule is pretty structured for that weekend, but I'll have about five hours of free time (by myself) on a Sunday night. What's the best way to spend those hours? [more inside]
How much is it worth to you to have (relative) freedom of choice? Enrolling in health insurance and I'm debating between an HMO and a PPO (both under Blue Shield of CA). The difference in cost is roughly $1,000. I'm a 26 year old female but I'm not exactly "healthy". I have mysterious, debilitating, chronic joint pain all over (undiagnosed as of yet), a couple car accident-related injuries that flare up every now and then, and I need to get a pap smear every 3 months due to a recent scare. So acupuncturists, chiropractors, internists, rheumatologists, and gynecologists must all be within easy reach for me. [more inside]
I'm taking a leisurely drive from San Jose CA. to Tacoma WA. I have allowed myself 4 days for the ride up and 4 for the ride back. What should I see? [more inside]
I pretty much only have time off when everybody else has time off, but I don't enjoy spending my time off with everybody else! What are your general tricks and specific suggestions for enjoying tourist destinations without crowds? I'm especially interested in California (I live in the SF Bay Area), but general ideas and other places are fine too. [more inside]
Young professional couple, 30 y/o, being relocated from NY to work in Roseville, CA. Currently work in Manhattan and live right outside the city. We're hoping to live somewhere that is within close distance to bars, restaurants, shops, etc. but are not looking to live in the suburbs. Preliminary research has shown us neighborhoods either very suburby or college towns. We still are hoping for the california feel so are a little weary about living in downtown sacramento but are open to any suggestions. We want to avoid living in an apartment building full of college kids. We would like to be west of sacramento so in closer distance to san francisco/napa/weekend trip options.
I'm looking for a relatively fine-grained source of health and environmental data for Contra Costa County, CA. County-by-county is no good, and even city-by-city isn't that great. I'd like to see it by block if possible (zip code would be useful). Anything that fine-grained would be fine: cancer rates, mortality rates, air quality, etc. [more inside]
Within the last month there's been a 6.9 off the Northern California coast which I did not feel, a 4.4 near Westwood which I felt, a 5.1 near La Habra which I felt, and a swarm of aftershocks (?) of the La Habra earthquake which I haven't felt. That seems like an unusually large number of earthquakes to me. Has anyone crunched the numbers to find out if the earth has been shaking in California more than usual?
We've just started renting a house, so we can grow delicious things to eat! However, I need to unpack (and write, and cook, and teach, and...) rather than garden. I am willing to throw a certain amount of money at this problem. What should I look for at garden stores? [more inside]
I thought that, by law, all wine bottles in the US must show their % alcohol content. But recently in California I've bought wine which doesn't display the alcohol content on either the front or back label. Am I just not looking close enough?
My dear friend got married late last year and I'm a little behind on sending him and his new wife a wedding present. I'd like to find them something ~$50, related to cheese (like a cheese smoker or a really cool cutting board—they love cheese and will be opening a small cheese shop soon). I'm having a very hard time finding such a thing. They also like vintage, retro, rockabilly, steampunk and the like. They are in California and I am in England; sending them something from the US would be preferable but if there's something uniquely British here and not too much cost to ship I could manage that too. Any ideas for specific items to purchase would be most welcome, thanks!
my 11-month old son and i are tagging along on my husband's business trip to LA. staying in seal beach and looking for things to do! [more inside]
I am traveling to California for the holidays, and I am slowly learning Spanish. I'd like to use this trip to motivate my learning. [more inside]
Boyfriend and I are planning a round trip (by rental car) through California and the Southwest and we'd love some input on the first rough draft of the route. We're going for 23 days in September next year and would like to stay in fairly affordable hotels and motels (no camping). [more inside]
I'm writing a little thing set in fall in California, and I'd like to get a sense of what the weather is like in the Alameda/Contra Costa area in October and November. I lived nearby - in Santa Cruz - for about a year, a long time ago, but my only memory is that it did eventually get cold - just not very. (Comparatively - I live in New England now, my cold scale now goes right on up to 11.) [more inside]
I want to treat my lovely bf to a weekend getaway somewhere within a few hours flying distance from the PNW. Details inside. [more inside]

My son and I are heading out next week to California so he can visit UC-Berkeley and UC-Santa Cruz. What city is the best to pick a hotel in as a base point? [more inside]
Having spent my entire life doing what was expected of me when and where I was supposed to do it and clinging fairly tightly to my parents and home life, I'd like to take the next year or so to inject some vigor and excitement into my young years before I settle for the rat race to the picket fence with my . I'm thinking the most drastic and simultaneously safest way to do this would be to spend time in California. I've been there twice and loved it each time. Trouble is that, given my unique set of circumstances, that's starting to look more like a pipe dream than a feasible reality. Is there any hope of finding a good, well-developed reason to move out there own my own, at least for a year? [more inside]
I recently drove from LA to San Francisco and back along I-5 and I noticed that there's a ton of signs along the highway that simply say "Congress Created Dust Bowl." There are a few other signs that mention Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic politicians, but it was difficult to get the full picture of what the signs were talking about. Can anyone provide some context/background to what these signs are about?
My partner and I will be driving from San Francisco to Sea Ranch, California one day soon. Returning a few days later. We'd love some suggestions for places to stop along the way for coffee or lunch and for my partner to take photos. Even some side trips would be possible; we have the whole day. Please tell me what you love along that route! Thank you.
My mother recently passed away and we are looking to rent out a function space to have a gathering for 25-30 friends and relatives to get together, have a little lunch, trade stories, and generally remember her. Low-key is the general idea. Looking for recommendation for locations (hotels, inns, converted barns, restaurants) around North Orange County, California — or web resources that will have good listing of the same. [more inside]
I'm helping an early-older-age couple with their idea of possibly relocating from New Mexico to Southern California in the coming years. We are looking for thoughts about a region we're unfamiliar with. [more inside]
My partner and I will be celebrating our anniversary with a weekend in Big Sur, and while the idea is mostly to just enjoy some time to ourselves, we'd also like some suggestions for stuff to do. We're particularly interested in: nice places to eat, gorgeous places to explore, and--is there swimming? Fun places to stop for food or views on the way down would be great, too, especially south of Monterey (we're familiar with the attractions up to there). We'll be staying at the Ragged Point Inn (AskMe favorite Deetjen's was booked, sadly), which on the southern edge of things, and know we'll probably have to drive a bit to get to... well, anything.
In Michael Palin's "Around the World in 80 Days", there's a shot of a building with an interesting sign. It says "EARTH SPACE SCIENCE ART FACT FICTION FANTASY". [more inside]
I paid off my car in December, and haven't been around. I'm now back home with the car in California, and I have the car title from the bank/company. The title says I have to notify the DMV within 10 days or something like that, but I'm obviously wayyy past that time frame now. What do I do? Google searches equally tell me to (a) transfer to my name and my name only, asap, removing the bank/company as lienholder, and (b) don't bother until I sell the car. Argh!! Which one is it? Help me, so I don't have to wait at the DMV ... and be told that I don't need to be there after all!
We're celebrating our 20th anniversary this summer (yay!) and we're trying to find a place to stay for a week in the western/northwestern US to celebrate this milestone. The catch is that this destination needs to be some place new to us. A few other particular requirements below the fold. [more inside]
