My friend and her ex-boyfriend got in a fight, he got violent and beat her up pretty bad. She got in the car with their baby and fled cross-country to stay with her parents. There is a hearing next month to determine custody of the child, and she doesn't want to lose the kid to what is likely going to be an abusive father. Lawyer up, right? Problem is, not a lot of money. Can you point me to any organizations in California that provide pro-bono / sliding-scale / low-cost legal aid services for abused women? [more inside]

Please recommend an attorney -- preferably one in the Los Angeles area -- for an unusual Italian citizenship by descent case. Looking for one with knowledge of complicated 20th Century treaties regarding the former Ottoman Empire, modern Turkey, Italy, and Greece, and experience dealing with a lack of some typical primary citizenship evidence. A friend of mine is quite possibly a father of a nine year old girl in California. He'd laid up some with a woman who got pregnant and determined to have the child, told him to get the hell away from her, she didn't want him in her or the childs life anyways, so go buzz off, and my friend did buzz off. Nine years pass. He's very interested in that child now, he'd want to establish paternity first off -- Momma was sortof a sleaze, as he was at the time -- he wants to know if he is Daddy and if he is how does he find his daughter? Street word is that Momma had to give her up to CA social system. [more inside]

California legal/medical/ethical question: In advance of my going to the hospital to give birth within the next few weeks, I decided to download and fill out California's standard Advance Health Care Directive form, i.e. a living will (and to have my husband fill his out too, as long as we were at it). However, Google informs me via multiple sources that this form, even if signed and notarized, is "not valid if pregnant". WTF? [more inside]
