What do I need to know for a road trip from California to Arizona?

I just quit my job and I need to get away from my life for a while. I want to take a road trip by myself to Arizona, but I've never been on one before. Actually, I've never left the Bay Area since I was a kid. Does anyone have some kind of advice, things that newbie travelers usually neglect that I should know about? [more inside]

What is this weird insect we found in our California yard?

Explain California Unemployment Benefits.. (to me like I'm a 5yo)

So I'm about to be laid off, I think. And I've never dealt with unemployment (I'm lucky) before. So what are some important things to know? I have some basic questions: 1) How long do the benefits last? 2) If I get a job offer, do I have to take the first one -- even if I expect better offers later? 3) Should I end any/all freelance work while getting EDD benefits? To phx

I'm driving from Sacramento to Phoenix for a quasi-family emergency. I'm two hours from Bakersfield, when I will have to make a decision: Take I-40 out of Barstow, or go further south to I-10. Will stop somewhere tonight. Which is the least bad drive, given traffic, construction, etc. I'm on 99 now, North of Fresno. Thanks!

Help us plan a Southwestern family Christmas

We have three groups of people: two adults in Oakland, California; two adults and four children near Salt Lake City; and one adult in Michigan. Can I get locally produced wood veneers in California?

I'm looking for (small quantities) of wood veneer strips from wood grown in California. Is such a thing possible? It could be new or reclaimed, but I want to make a ring so any re-used would have to be amenable to that. Additional bonus points for wood from the central coast area. Is having veneer manufactured from locally sourced wood a not insanely expensive option?
