What is the current state of the art in MAME frontends?

What is the current state of the art in MAME frontends? I have a huge storehouse of parts and gizmos for my nascent MAME cabinet. The last time I had it up and running ArcadeOS was the preferred frontend for a transparent experience. But that was a LONG time ago. I also have some experience with AdvanceMENU & AdvanceMAME, which i also liked. After researching it again i found a lot of the old links i had were dead and it doesn't look like ArcadeOS has been updated in quite awhile.

Can anybody recommend a current frontend that supports multiple emus and makes the whole process of picking a ROM to play both logistically and aesthetically pleasing? (the last point is VERY important...it should not look cheesy or too flashy).

Maximus Arcade looks promising (found here on MeFi).

Any suggestions?

Help make my card catalog into an awesome pixel-ated image.

I recently acquired one of these orthodontic cabinets at a consignment shop and it is in desperate need of a paint job. Because there are 100 drawers (10 x 10) I would like to paint the individual drawers to create a neat image when the cabinet is viewed from a distance. Any suggestions? I've thought of a Mondrian-style idea as well as Mario or Space Invaders. I do not mind purchasing different colored spray paints but would like the entire cabinet to become a talking point in my living room. (The wackier or more humorous, the better.) But since there are only 100 drawers, I do not think a Close-style drawing or depiction of something huge would work.

(As an aside, I purchased the cabinet for 25 bucks and it was rusty and gross. I did not know it was an orthodontics cabinet (I assumed library) until I opened up some of the bins and they contained teeth. Yes, teeth. Teeth and tooth molds. Ew. Ew. Ew. So I've scrubbed and vinegared/baking soda-ed all 100 of the drawers, and they are now clean and ready for primer and paint.)

I'm used to paying ikea prices, what is reasonable for a library card catalog file cabinet?

What is a reasonable price to pay for a library card catalog cabinet? I would really like to have a library card catalog cabinet, like the ones that held the thousands of catalog cards in all the small file drawers. I think it would look awesome in my office and make for great storage for all my small electronics projects.

The problem is that people who are selling these on craigslist and ebay are usually asking ~1000 dollars or so for the type I want. This seems really high to me. Anyone have a feel for a realistic range of prices?

What gives with the Obama Cabinet problems?

Did Obama make bad picks, in terms of the recent revelations of tax problems, for some of his Cabinet officials, has he had bad luck, is this par for the course, or is there more scrutiny now than in the past? I've found myself wondering why so many of Obama's Cabinet picks have gone down in flames over tax issues. In the past I wouldn't have paid much attention to whether or not a nominee for a Cabinet post was rejected or whether there was any controversy over their taxes, so I can't recall whether or not other recent presidents, going back to, say, Carter, have had similar troubles.

Honestly, I personally wouldn't have been phased by any of the revelations which have come out about any of Obama's nominee's, even the troubles of Tom Daschle, even if they had been made against Cabinet Secretaries in prior administrations. So I'm wondering if there is a new standard, or whether these sorts of problems have cropped up for past presidents, or whether Obama has just made some unusually bad choices.

What should I put in my china cabinet?

I recently received a large, beautiful china cabinet/buffet, and it's now the focal piece in my living room. It's wonderful, but seeing as I have no china, I have no idea what to put in it. What sort of things, other than dishes, work well when placed in a china cabinet? I initially thought to put my books in it, though the shelves inside of the six-foot long structure are made of glass and that sort of worries me. Right now, there's a few martini glasses in there, but they're awfully lonely.

Soon we'll be Living the Dream, but first: How to move an arcade game cabinet up the stairs?

What is the best way to transport a an arcade game cabinet (Ms. Pac-Man, if you must know) across town and then up the stairs? My partner likesuchasand and I are going to look at a Ms. Pac-Man arcade game tonight, and we are pretty sure we want it. One of the things I'm most worried about, though, is how we will get it across town (rent a U-Haul? Then how do you strap it securely?) and up the stairs to our second-floor apartment. Without breaking it.

The stairs are your typical apartment complex stairs: poured concrete in a metal sort of frame, with metal edges. Is this even possible? Am I trying to build the pyramids? Does my solution involve blankets, plywood, rope, what?

Assume several strong people, who will be rewarded with much beer. Thank you!

How do you work a file cabinet?

Tell me about your personal filing system. How you organize your file cabinets, that is. Horrifying but true: in 32 years of living, I've never owned filing cabinets until now. I've been doing GTD for a while now but have resisted starting my "reference" files because I don't really know how. Silly, no? I'm also starting a small business and will need to keep plenty of paperwork for that, but again it will mostly be reference material--very little of it will require action.

So yeah, starting from scratch, how would you recommend I build a clean system for keeping track of all the random paper that drifts into my life? That laundry basket full of old mail and tax forms just ain't cutting it. Ask my girlfriend, she'll confirm.

Using an Awl as a ProTool

How would one build a musical apothecary cabinet or locate someone who could build such a thing for you? I read somewhere once about an artist who built a set of drawers that played different bits of music when you opened them. I would like to expand that to an apothecary cabinet, where each little drawer, when open, would play a repeating bit of music. By opening different drawers, you could modularly combine the musical phrases, like a series of loops. I doubt I have the skills to build something like this, but I have friends who are electricians and carpenters, so if someone could explain how this might work, I could conceivably build it with their help. I would also be interested if you knew of someone who one could hire to build this musical cabinet.

Help me camouflage cabinet doors

Kitchen cabinet camouflage - bring me your ideas! I've got a 10-year-old condo with a kitchen that was treated pretty poorly by the previous owners. After layers of crud were removed, I discovered that some of the lower cabinet doors have 1x1" holes in the white veneer, revealing partical board. I am now looking for ways to camouflage this.

I cannot reorder doors in this style. The cabinet company no longer makes them and I can't really find anything that looks similar. They are flat white cabinet doors.

I don't want to paint the doors. I'd have to paint all the bottom ones or the three damaged ones would stand out. And this is a condo in an upscale neighbourhood. Painted cabinets would not really look right in a modern kitchen.

I realize that I could put new veneer on the cabinets, but I did that at my old place and, with wear and tear, the veneer started to peel away. If I was just planning to flip this condo, I'd redo the veneer. But I'm going to be here a while.

I have considered replacing the cabinets or the doors. However, I'd prefer to save my budget for other things, since I am not planning on living here for more than a few years. If I must replace the doors, I will. But let's not go there with this thread.

Today, I remembered a Debbie Travis TV show where she used aluminum channels to hide chipped cabinet doors. (She also went crazy with orange plastic...I don't want to do that.) It occurred to me that, because the damage on my cabinet doors is within an inch or so of the bottom of the cabinet doors, it could be disguised with some sort of metal channel. For example, I could just put the channel along all the bottom cabinets and make it look like a feature. Given that there are some metal separators between the drawers and the cabinets, this would not look out of place.

However, I wondered what other means I could use to disguise the damage. I'd like to do something that looks modern and clean. So, aside from metal channels, what other things could I use to hide the damage?

FWIW, we'll be replacing the appliances and putting in stone counters. And I've searched old threads here, in Google, and looked at what's available from Home Depot and Lee Valley. But I may be looking for a non-standard solution -- who would have thought to use metal channels, for example?

Thanks!

Find the ideal file cabinet?

Help me find a good filing cabinet? My criteria for the perfect filing cabinet:
(1) Good quality - it won't fall apart like my current cabinet did.
(2) Doesn't require hanging file folders - has an adjustable backstop so I can just use manila folders.
(3) Not hideously ugly - neither made of metal with ugly enamel finish, nor covered with too much decorative crap.

My attempts to find one at regular stores and via google searches have totally failed.
