How does Zombies, Run! handle distance vs time?

I've been doing the Zombies 5k training, and the only thing I don't totally love is how it handles distance, speed, and time. Runner 5 Mefites, can you tell me how you've found the full grown-up app so that I know what to expect? [more inside]

Imagine Bill Bryson wrote an intro to running book...

What's a good introduction to running book? I'd prefer a quick read, not too technical, humorous but not insulting. Something that starts with the basics (shoes, feet, clothing) and goes on to talk about things like all weather running and maybe even the basics of marathon training. [more inside]

Older, plumper, faster, stronger: asthma, jogging & Pavlov

I'm a life-long asthmatic, I take a steroid inhaler (preventer) daily and use a reliever inhaler regularly. I'm trying for the second time to complete C25k. I had to stop the first attempt due to life getting in the way. Second time round, I swear just the anticipation of sessions I did before is enough to make my chest tight. I'm struggling so much lately I've abandoned the programme and just go for a jog for as long as I can, which is 20 -30 minutes. That's ok, and I'm sure as far as exercise goes is better than nothing, but I honestly never even get to have tired legs before I have to stop; because I stop when I run out of breath. So I'm not totally unfit in grandma terms. I walk everywhere, dance, stretch well, am flexible, can easily get off the floor without using my hands. I'm not bothered about my (2st over)weight. But I'd like to able to get to the point where jogging makes me tired, and I think this automatic chest-tightening - and associated panic - is a reflex from a lifetime of asthma being an issue. Did I injure myself on my first attempt at C25K?

I started Couch-to-5K on Friday morning, and have been feeling awful since (upper body pain and a headache that I can't seem to kick). Could I have done this to myself, and if so, how do I not do it again? [more inside]

What is this perpetual bruise-like pain on my shin?

This is an issue that I've been aware of for years, but have never investigated it with a doctor because it usually only hurts when I put pressure in one particular spot. (Hey, doc, it hurts when I do this...) The spot is 3-5 inches above my ankle, along the very edge of my shin bone on the inside of my left leg. It's very tender, hurts quite a bit if that one spot is knocked or if I push on it. There's no bruise visible on the skin. [more inside]

Too much, or just right?

Yesterday, I stepped up the intensity of my near-daily workout, and I'm really feeling it. I was ravenous all day yesterday, and particularly ravenous for the kinds of high-carb high-fat foods I've worked so hard to cut out of my diet. Also, I was very brain-tired; I was foggy and had trouble concentrating all day. Are these post-workout effects a sign of overdoing it, or of doing it right? [more inside]
