Windows Media Player and Center in Vista suck at subtitles for the old b&w foreign flicks I watch. Subtitles are white and get washed out when the picture is white. Is there a hack or some other media player which will render the subtitles better (outlined or in yellow). (FYI: subtitles for these films show up great on my Sony DVD player.)

I want to shoot some stuff using a video camera that cost a couple hundred bucks and I want it to end up looking (as much as possible) like a B&W movie from the 1940s (like, say, Casablanca). I don't need the film to look like it's a bad quality print (with pock marks and white lines and whatnot), but I do want it to look similar in style and feel of an old film. What can I do during filming or post-production to make the footage have an older feel? [more inside]

Many years ago, Saturday Night Live used to showcase short films as interstitial material between skits. One of these was a take off of In Cold Blood, done in black-and-white, and depicted two men waiting outside a house in the dark, smoking, then donning ski masks and going up to the house, ringing the doorbell, and when the startled home owner opened the door announced "You're going...skiing!". At this point the film cut to stock footage of skiiers at a ski resort, uh, skiing.
Does anyone remember this short film? What was it called, who made it, and most importantly, where can I get a copy, preferably on DVD?

Has anyone used Costco's film lab to print black and white? I develop my own b&w film but don't have a darkroom. Was thinking of getting a scanner and, after scanning and editing the negs, having the prints done at Costco. [more inside]
