I'm looking for a side / home based business. I've been toying with the idea of seling WIFI access to retailers and other establishments and came across WHOTSPOT. I'm intrigued by their turnkey solutions and low startup costs. Does anyone here have any experience with them or knowledge of their operation ?

market sizing:it consulting shops

i need help market sizing. Iam trying to figure out how many small IT shops there are with under 25 people. I was given a quote that there are 50,000 IT service providers with headcounts under 25 that are selling a service, i.e. Managed Service Provider (MSP). The source indicated this number came from Gartner.

Using the trademarked name of a business no longer in business

Another MeFi trademark question: A small restaurant chain (let’s say ABCFood) opened in Colorado in 1996 and closed all its locations in Q4 2004. All of ABCFood’s state business registrations are in "Delinquent" and/or "Administratively Dissolved" status, and the proprietor has moved on to other endeavors. The USPTO still has a "live" listing for ABCFood’s trademark, though, as mentioned, the mark is no longer maintained. What obstacles would stop someone from hypothetically opening a similar chain with the name ABCFood in another state?

How to I pull off the sales event of the year?

How do I pull off the sales event of the year? I have been put in charge of my company’s fiscal year end sale/open house. The purpose of this event is to generate sales (both immediate and future). We sell specialized machinery to hobbyists and professionals. This will be an opportunity for our local customers to come and see our show room and get great end of the year deals. This will also be marketed to our national customers. They will be able to call in and get the same deal as someone attending our event. We have the opportunity to market to several types: people in our database that have purchased a tool from us in the past, people in our database that have a deposit on a machine, people in our database that have expressed interest in our machinery in the recent and far past. I have several questions that hopefully this knowledgeable group can answer. [more inside]

How does the trademark system work?

I run a small local computer repair business. I have a website and i have acquired a DBA (assumed name) in the name that i use for my business. the problem is that my website, lets call it computer repair man for example, i own THECOMPUTERREPAIRMAN.com. the site without the word "the" infront of it is taken by someone else. If they havent trademarked "computer repairman" can I? Or if they were using it first without TM do they still have the rights to it? If they have already done it, can i trademark "the computer repairman"? How else can i protect my companies identity??

Home Based Business

I was looking online into some home based businesses. You know those things you read about..."make millions just packing envelopes?" Well, this one is not quite that. Ever heard of www.assuranceplus.net? If so, why doesn't everyone do this? Anyone ever made money doing this?

Can I bargain with the IRS?

In 2001, my .com finally imploded in the week after September 11th, when our few remaining clients went out of business. For another couple of years the corporation continued to exist, with me as sole employee, though it was only an after-hours interest -- I've long since moved on from doing anything with this corporation. It's existed only on paper for the past two years while I've paid the IRS, out of my own pocket, some payroll taxes (941 withholdings) that my accounting errors led me to underpay. They (and I) have just noticed that I forgot to file for the Q3 2001. It seems that I paid $6,000 to employees in that final quarter, so I figure my business owes the IRS another couple of thousand dollars in taxes. Now what? I don't have a couple of thousand dollars to throw at this, and the corporation's bank account is all but empty. Can I bargain with the IRS? Will they give me any bonus points for coming forward and telling them about this? Is my moral obligation to personally pay this debt sufficient that I should just buck up and set up a payment plan? What happens if, worst case, I just shut down the corporation? [more inside]

Best program or website for simple small business bookkeeping

Best ideas for small business bookkeepingI run a home business where I usually have one part time employee, and sometimes a second. I need to do something better than I’m doing on bookkeeping. Quickbooks Pro seems a bit of overkill, in that I don’t do invoices, or many of the other things it purports to do. And I’ve never even used plain Quickbooks. I need some advice on the best, simplest bookkeeping system that would really do only a few things – (1) allow me to put in the rates, hours, etc. of my employees and translate this into my I.R.S. quarterly reports, etc., (2) Work with my business charge card account on line to categorize charges for Schedule C purposes, (3) Do the same with my business checking account. I have Mac OS X. I’d appreciate any thoughts on what program or online service I should use to get this done. Thanks
