How does one learn the ropes of running a restaraunt?

Mrs. Karaage and I are avid foodies and cooks. We are also white collar DINKs in the DC area that has never worked in a restaraunt a day of our lives. We daydream quite a bit of running a diner/cafe, in particular highlighting dishes that we both love and rarely see around here. I am also fully aware that this is a daydream that results in bankruptcies and broken families. [more inside]

Giving an unpaid talk in Canada: business or tourist?

YANML, but I am a US resident, and have a Korean passport and a US green card. I am going to Canada for less than a week, to give an unpaid talk and meet with people in my field (though the hosts are paying for airfare and hotels). According to the official websites, I'd say this qualifies as a business trip. Does anyone have experience with a similar trip? Do business trips raise more flags at the border?

What are you looking for in a coffee subscription?

I now live in Indonesia and have access to some great coffee beans. Some US friends want me to ship some packs, and I'm about to! Some good local roasters too. For those of you who have coffee subscriptions already, - what format do you prefer (weekly/ monthly) - did you like exploring 'new' beans outside your typical taste profile - what made the different between a truly great coffee sub service and a regular one, in your mind?

A facebook poll app that keeps visitors on facebook?

Looking to set-up a simple five question poll for my business. I would like the insight but can see by past visits most facebook "friends" will not click a link through to a separate page. I am not personally on facebook so I can't look for a poll I have received in the past to use. It seems so simple yet my five hours of heavy lifting haven't resulted in what am looking for... Thank you in advance! [more inside]

Is there such a thing as an information management counselor or coach?

I'm not talking about "information management" in terms of corporate IT, which is all you find when you search on Google. I'm talking about someone to help me develop a sustainable plan to process the absurd amount of information that constantly bombards me. I figure I need someone who can help my develop reliable, efficient systems and also probably the mental toughness to keep doing it. I've looked at so many books, but my situation is beyond any one of them. I feel like I need someone who understands the psychology, systematizing , and technology of the matter. [more inside]

Running a large event, need ability for people to order food/drink?

I'm part of a committee organizing a fairly large event. I'm looking for an app, or online provider that would allow people to go to a web page on their phones to order drinks/food and have that order sent to a central computer (at the bar for this event) and then wait staff would then take the food/drink to their suite. I've looked at placing a tablet and square reader in each "suite", however there are some security risks with that. The other option is to create a web page that sends the orders to a wireless printer (located in the bar), and then the wait staff would collect the funds when the food/drink is delivered. I was hoping someone knew of a service that would accomplish this easily. I know there are several tablet based POS systems (used in sushi restaurants, for example), but this event is only a few days long and it does not make sense to invest in thousands of dollars of equipment. Thanks for your help!

Are there Universal Task Codes for Graphic Design?

Lawyers have the Uniform Task Based Management System. Doctors have CPT Codes. But what about other industries, like marketing, advertising, and graphic design? Surely there's a standardized list for design or advertising professionals. [more inside]

Can I financially divorce my husband?

We own a mid-sized business together. Communication between us has effectively stopped, mainly because of differing business styles. We still talk, but he stopped listening about 10 years ago. It’s gotten to the point where we act independently of each other in both our professional and personal lives. His actions have eroded my respect and trust for him, business-wise. I think the only way to save our 20 year marriage is to split financially, but I don’t know if that is possible. [more inside]
