It seems like wherever I go, businesses have flat roofs, while houses have sloped ones. I've always heard bad things about flat roofing, but presumably they have some sort of reasoning for not going with the sloped. [more inside]
I am searching for an inexpensive way to provide phone service for a small business. [more inside]
I'm part of a committee organizing a fairly large event. I'm looking for an app, or online provider that would allow people to go to a web page on their phones to order drinks/food and have that order sent to a central computer (at the bar for this event) and then wait staff would then take the food/drink to their suite. I've looked at placing a tablet and square reader in each "suite", however there are some security risks with that. The other option is to create a web page that sends the orders to a wireless printer (located in the bar), and then the wait staff would collect the funds when the food/drink is delivered. I was hoping someone knew of a service that would accomplish this easily. I know there are several tablet based POS systems (used in sushi restaurants, for example), but this event is only a few days long and it does not make sense to invest in thousands of dollars of equipment. Thanks for your help!
Lawyers have the Uniform Task Based Management System. Doctors have CPT Codes. But what about other industries, like marketing, advertising, and graphic design? The company I work for is developing a list of tasks so we can report our time in a meaningful way, but it's proving to be a more extensive task than anyone anticipated. Surely there's a standardized list for design or advertising professionals. [more inside]
We own a mid-sized business together. Communication between us has effectively stopped, mainly because of differing business styles. We still talk, but he stopped listening about 10 years ago. It’s gotten to the point where we act independently of each other in both our professional and personal lives. His actions have eroded my respect and trust for him, business-wise. I think the only way to save our 20 year marriage is to split financially, but I don’t know if that is possible. [more inside]

I am a small business owner and am sending an email newsletter out to a few hundred people in the next week or so. It's ready to go, and I'm trying to decide which day to send it out to get the highest chance of people reading it. All recipients are in the US. [more inside]
I have a job that I really love with a young company that involves managing relationships with current (subscription-based) customers - what is sometimes labeled in software as "Customer Success." Because the company is young, I've been granted lots of freedom in creating this role, and I'd like to seriously own it. My research efforts have stymied me, however - everything I come across seems to be selling me something. [more inside]

Our company once had a full fledged marketing department but after years of downsizing we're on our own. Some of my coworkers want to build brand awareness ahead of projects that will be rolling out in the new year. They have the green light from higher ups but no one knows what to do and where to start. How can self motivated individuals learn a crash course in business marketing? [more inside]
I find the legal and operational nooks and crannies of running a startup detailed in Neal Stephenson's novel Cryptonomicon fascinating. (Example: "People like Avi and Beryl, who have been in business a lot, have this noticeable preference for two-person conversations [to protect other corporate officers].") Do you have any recommendations for novels or non-fiction with similar storylines, passages and advice?
In the last few years I've frequently heard business people and business journalists using the word "delight" in relation to their customers' experiences in a way that makes it sound like a very specific buzz word from a very specific source. Like a marketing book that called out "customer delight" as a key metric or something. Is there a known original vector for this bit of word virus?

On my recommendation, my husband hired an old friend of mine to design his website last year. She behaved quite unprofessionally, and I haven't talked to her since both because of that and because of physical distance (we'd had only sporadic contact since university). But I'd like to at least get in touch with her for the holidays, because I do miss her. Should I break the ice? If so, how? [more inside]
I am looking for a high-quality feasibility study template that can work on an international level (this is for a proposed startup in Europe/MENA region). Have you ever come across a template that you thought was well-planned? I don't mind paying for it but if it's for free, it would be great.
I met a visual artist two years ago whose work is very, very important to me. I set up a meeting with him because I work in the arts and my skills are complimentary to his. We planned to do a project together, so we spent a lovely day meeting and doing a bit of work together. But he immediately stopped communicating with me as soon as we parted ways. [more inside]
My wife is starting a professional organizing business and is having trouble coming up with a name for her business that a) doesn't sound generic (i.e. "Organizing Solutions"), b) would appeal equally well to businesses and homeowners and c) would avoid her services being confused with a cleaning service. I'm wondering if anyone here might be able to offer any suggestions?
We are a well known bicycle brand, and one of our local dealers closed up shop over night with no notice to us or even their employees. They have over $20,000 in debt with us. What are our options? Our dealer owes us over $20,000 in debt for stock, with some invoices close to 4 months past due. [more inside]
I am a professional. I am a lady. Every day, in meetings, the same thing happens: the contribution I'm so excited to make to a meeting gets INTERRUPTED by a man or a woman. I am not verbose. I am succinct. I do not speak more than anyone else in the group. Yet I cannot freaking finish a thought without someone interrupting me. It is making me insane. [more inside]

I'm leaving my job in two weeks, and have been asked to train several coworkers before I leave. They are asking how best to promote within the organization, and while I have some good tips, I'd love to find a good online course (free or not) to refer them to. I'm looking for courses on leadership, professional development, completed staff work, and the like. I've looked at Coursera but can't find much. Where else should I look?

Since the team is growing and business is going well, I'm more and more inclined towards founding a design studio (print, video, interactive). I left a cushy job 7 years ago to start my own business in IT. The company posted huge losses during the first three years of operation and I even had to sell my house in order to survive and keep the company afloat. Although the business is doing increasingly better, the hardship of the past years has taken its toll on my morale and I sometimes feel that I cannot take it anymore. How do I motivate myself to keep going? [more inside]
As an illustrator/letterer living in Toronto and I want to start selling my posters, but I need to know how to handle the post-designing aspect of things (type of printing, best standard paper stocks, type of packaging, type of shipping/drop-shipping, pricing, ...). Our business is not doing as well as we hoped and we're considering closing it. The problem is that we're in a 5 year lease and have 4 years left. I confirmed with our lawyer that despite our business being an LLC, we are personally guaranteeing this lease. From what I understand, the only way to get out of a business lease like this is to declare personal bankruptcy. The only asset we have (besides the equipment, etc in the business) is a small inheritance. I don't want to lose that. [more inside]

Are there any cafes out there in the wild that have survived (or better, thrived) with a strictly enforced no-laptop, no-iPad (essentially, "no portable electronic offices") policy? I know a lot about a particular type of small business. I aim to capitalise on my experience by creating a website that offers free tips and a ebook for purchase by people who would like to enter this business. So, I've been doing mechanical engineering for ~6 years now and it's becoming apparent that I could do a lot better (for myself, for others) with truly top-notch social/leadership/networking skills. What's a good way to gain these skills? [more inside]
I have what I think is a really good idea for a social networking website, kind of along the lines of airbnb or meetup. If it was done right, I think it could be very popular. But the problem is that I have zero business knowledge and zero computer/coding/web design knowledge, and therefore I have no leverage with those I'd have to partner with. All I have is an idea. I came up a product idea and made a sample/prototype but I have no idea how to go next. I know my target store customers but how to I get in touch with them. Please let me know what you think, thanks!

I have a very very niche job. I've been doing it for over ten years now and have made about $28,000 per year. Because of my experience, I was called in for a meet and greet. It was going to lead nowhere. So, I pretty much blew it off, and blew the next one off, and showed up to the third because it was on my way home. They hired me and gave me a job that pays about $786,000 per year. I was told that they had reservations about me and told me they were bothered by the fact that I wore "denim with unpatched holes" at the interview. I didn't even think I was being considered. This is very unreal. And now I will have a job that pays me more in my bimonthly check than my last year's entire gross. I will be working with a different clientele, and my position will have more prestige than previously. So how do I dress? [more inside]
