How should I bandage my burn?

How should I care for my (now blister-less) burn? The sort-of gory details inside... I burned my right index finger below the first knuckle on a toaster oven last Thursday. It is probably a second-degree burn. I got a good blister from it. It did pop (on its own, I swear I didn't touch it) and I was leaving it uncovered to sort of air out and dry up. I did put Bacitracin on it and kept it clean.

Stupidly and accidentally, I ripped the blister skin off. I kept a band-aid on that for several days (still with the Bacitracin) but worried it was staying too moist and wouldn't scab up. So yesterday, upon internet dabbling, I switched to gauze and tape. Now the gauze is sticking to the wound, even if I smear a lot of ointment on it beforehand. So anytime I change the gauze, it's going to rip open.

It's an open wound, less than a dime in diameter, and I think at least the first two layers of skin are bye-bye. I also think I'm continuing to exacerbate it by having to type/mouse/work. I'm going on vacation on Friday (nowhere exotic) so hopefully I can lay off the finger a little more then.

How should I bandage this thing?

What is this unexplained mark on my friend's neck?

What could have caused this weird mark on my friend's neck? It started out as a red patch, then turned into this... half-flower/sun-shaped thing! Picture. She said it hurt a little when it was just red and blotchy (this lasted about half a day), but ever since it turned "flowery" it hasn't really hurt. It has been like this for almost two days now.

We're not worried as such, just really puzzled as to what could've caused this particular shape, so I was hoping someone here may go "oh I got exactly that mark when I...."

Additional data points:
- she wasn't drunk when it happened (& no one else was involved)
- close up it looks kinda like an abrasion more than a burn
- she first noticed the red patch when she woke up in the morning
- she considered it may be caused by her hot water bottle but that doesn't explain the shape
- we're in the South of England so no big scary spiders etc (I think...)

How To Place Shortcut in root of Burn CD

How do you create a shortcut in the root of a burn CD to point to a file inside a folder in that same cd? I am burning a CD that requires that the index file stay in the same folder as all the files it indexs. I want to be able to create a shortcut in the root of the CD that points to the index.htm so the person I am burning the cd for wont have to go dig for it inthe folder that contains about 300 files.

Any one know how to do this? I have tried but it never seems to work, because most people have their cd as a different drive letter.

Thanks

How to heal a sunburn?

How do I deal with a horrible sunburn? It's so bad that my shoulders have second degree burns and it hurts to move my arms. Is there a way to lessen the pain or somehow make my skin heal faster? I got the burn on Friday and have been applying aloe vera ever since.

Data + video in one disc

Trying to make a multi-mode DVD: video plus data. What tool do I need? I want to make a DVD that will play in an ordinary DVD player, but also contains some data files (independent of the video content) that can be seen when you put the disc in a computer.

I don't need to have autoruns, link to the data content from the disc menus, or anything fancy like that. I just want two types of data accessible by different machines.

The full story: I have video of an educational presentation. During the talk the speaker refers to the handouts. I'd like to have copies of the handouts on the disc so people can view them there or print off new copies if they don't have the hardcopies they got the first time.

Free/open source is best, but I might be willing to spend some money if necessary. Are there any good software tools for this?

Is it safe to burn untreated pine which was stained ~10 years ago? We are tearing down our deck, which was built about 10 years ago with untreated pine and has been stained with an oil-based stain. We'd like to burn the torn-off wood. Most of the stain has now worn off but the burn site is in the garden area and we fear contamination of our veggies.

Should we burn the decking or attempt to Freecycle the stuff instead?

Burning a gold master - special discs? Software? Burners? Need to burn a disc that's going into multi-thousand production duplication I'm creating a software program that's going to be distributed on DVD. Is there a special way of creating the final, master disc than just burning one in my computer's drive? Are there software, hardware and media considerations to take into account? These will need to be burned, and then shipped across the country for production.
How to make my own karaoke discs from scratch?

How do I take a song off a regular cd, add viewable lyrics (and whatever else is necessary) and turn it into a karaoke disc that I can hand to the kj at a karaoke joint?

I already have evil lyrics and some other audio software, but I can only find reference to working with songs that are already on a cdg ... no references in my audio programs to exactly how to make one myself. Further info: Evil lyrics will yield me a .kar and help me sync it to the music I'm playing ... but it doesn't explain what a .kar is or what to do with it.

And I want to make my own rather than find or purchase karaoke tracks because I tend to pick nonmainstream songs that are often not found anywhere but on the cd's I bought them on!

Thanks in advance!

DVD Burning 101 MetaQuestion

How do I back up my movies to DVD-R so I can take the backups to the gym on my portable and prevent my good ones from getting scratched? I just bought a new IMac running Leopard. It has the burner. From research, it looks like I need 1. Mac the Ripper---2.DVD 2toOneX (for compression)---and 3.Roxio Toast to burn (even though there is burning software on my computer).....I have no really good clue and am open to any support and advice you might have to offer. I don't want to buy things that are not so easy to work. I am a very basic computer user.
thanks for your time!

MP3 CD Woes

How to burn Mp3 random mixes (not entire albums) into several folders on Macintosh for easy navigation in my car cd player...I used to be able to make mp3 discs of whatever songs i wanted and then place them into folders on my desktop, then burn them to disc. It seems that Itunes only allows some form of folder separation (if any at all) by sorting things only by each group's album. This is not helpful if you want several folders with random songs in each folder...for example...I want one folder with songs by rock groups..another that is jazz...whatever. On the new imac, it does not seem to let me take the drag and dropped mp3s in folders on my desktop to a burn disc icon as it did in my older G4. Any suggestions on software or a simpler way around this? I appreciate your input. When it did work, it worked great and saved me from using a crummy fm transmitter on my ipod. The mp3 cds for me sound much better and are easily disposable if left in car.

Burn it Blue

I would like to find a video of Lila Downs appearing at the Academy Awards, please. I was completely underwhelmed by the songs and musical performances at this year's Oscars. Three songs from "Enchanted"? Seriously? I started thinking about good Oscar's performances, and I remembered that five years ago, Caetano Veloso and Lila Downs performed "Burn it Blue" together, and I got shivers down my spine. The recorded version does not do it justice. I would love to be able to watch that specific performance, with Lila and Caetano, but I have been unable to find it through traditional means. Can anyone here help me, perhaps point me in the right direction?

What is up with Vladimir Nabokov's "Laura" ?

To this day, what do we know about Dimitri Nabokov (Vladimir Nabokov's son) decision to burn his father'as last book : Laura ? LiterracyFilter : As you may know if you clicked on my question, Dimitri Nabokov (now an elderly man) has declared, last august (august 2007) that he would someday burn his father's last masterpiece, the unfinished book "Laura", a powerful description of the author's very fist love, which he also described as the most brilliant of them all..... in order to respect his father's last will. But other sources informed the medias that his nurse, writing down every single words of the author's last weeks deliriums, may have gotten the final version of what Nabokov wanted to make, of his book. Of course, such a finding, if ever published, may have quite an impact on modern litterature..

Yet I cannot find the "latest" news of the whole thing: does anyone know what is going to happen ? thanx

Where can I find pictures of dead firefighters?

Where can I find pictures of dead firefighters? I have a friend who is a firefighter. Their budget is about to be cut, and this was their year to replace their turnout gear. His chief wants semi-gory images of burned firefighters to use to sway the powers-that-be. I have searched Google and flickr to no avail. Does anyone have suggestions for where to look or links to actual images? Sorry for the morbid post.

When I burn a CD on my new IMAC, it doesn't play on my car's CD player.

Why won't the cd player in my car "read" cd's that I'm burning on my new I-Mac? I do a lot of driving, and typically burn podcasts onto cd's and listen when I drive.

When I burn a CD on my new IMAC, it doesn't play on my car's CD player. The car cd player doesn't reject (eject) the cd, it responds like it's reading and playing the disc, but there's no sound.

The CDs do play on a cd player in the house, but not in the car. I called Apple support, they had me check system preferences to confirm that it's set to burn an audio CD (as opposed to an mp3), and it is. They had no other suggestions.

The auto CD player does seem to work fine in all other regards. I just flipped platforms, and continually burned discs on my Dell, which continue to play just fine in the car. Seems like I can listen to any disc, as long as it wasn't burned on my new Mac!

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I want to save flash movies I find on the internet and collect them onto a DVD to watch on a DVD player. I'm helping a friend with a 3 to 4 yr old Dell running XP Home. He just bought an external DVD burner which I helped set up. He has hundreds of videos bookmarked (mostly on youtube) which he'd like to save and record onto a DVD. I installed Firefox and started looking for extensions that might do this easily, but haven't found anything great.

If it can't work as a self playing DVD, I will settle for a data DVD or CD playable on a DVD player or computer.

He is not willing to upgrade to Vista. He is low-tech and doesnt want to relearn anything.

ANyone know a good job recruiter and or resume development workshops in NYC?

Can anyone recommend a quality firm that will help me revise, update, and make my resume the best it can possible be, here in NYC? I am also looking for quality job recruiter or headhunters in NYC as well! I have been with my job for 8.5 years and I am totally burnt out and it is starting to show in my work. I never truly enjoyed what I did, but the money was good, so I pushed through. I have reached the point though, where the money is not a motivator anymore. It is affecting my personal life and I am stressed 24/7. I feel trapped because i have been here for so long, and while searching through some of the job sites out there, it seems like I am not qualified for anything but my current position (print ad sales).

I am on Monster, Career Builder, and Media Bistro currently, and with the exception of MB, the other two sites are filled with Scam jobs.

I have a pretty decent resume, that I feel just needs the once over by a pro who knows what companies look for these days when they scan over the countless amount of resumes they get on a daily basis.

I'd also like to meet with a job recruiter / placement, headhunting service which will maybe allow me to take an aptitude test, so I can see what directions I can branch out into.

I'd prefer to stay within the entertainment / music / tv field, but I am prepared to walk away.

So, I come to you guys for your help in helping me get started....

thanks!

I've tried boiling water in it (though that's hard in a skillet, when the stains are on the upper edges).

I've had this pan for years, and made many a grilled cheese in it, but I have recently moved into a place with my first gas oven - which seems more inclined to run hot. All of the butter came out of the bottom of the pan (and the sandwich didn't burn)....but all around the edge now are splotchy brown stains, almost like a patina.

There's no texture to these areas and if you run your finger over them, they feel as smooth as the shinier sides of the pan...with the exception being that they are covered with splotches of caramel-brown and black.

What should I do?

Also, what could I do to prevent this in the future? I'm a good cook, and not in the habit of scorching things. The pan was only over a medium-low flame, and - as mentioned - the sandwich didn't burn at all, nor the butter on the bottom of the pan (which came clean just fine).

They taste like BURNING

How does one taste really hot peppers? This year I planted a few different pepper plants and now they're yielding well and it's time to start cooking with them. But as I'm unfamiliar with the pepper types (I kind of played the pepper lottery at my local nursery after prime planting season), I have no idea how to cook with them.

The only information that I have about the peppers are via the little plastic flags that came in the plants and they're not very helpful (ie, "celebration pepper", "super chili", etc). All of the peppers that I've grown are too hot to eat on their own and I do not know how to temper the heat of them in order to get an idea as to their actual flavor.

My question in a nutshell would be: how does one actually "taste" a very hot pepper without temporarily rendering their taste buds useless? Is there a standard, neutral medium in which I might prepare them all in order to allow their flavor to be experienced without all of their heat?

Where's Danny Baker when you need him?

Dear Metafilter,

Please help me save my favourite pearly white Lacoste shirt, which now looks as if I've been wearing it whilst rolling around in nuclear waste. So, whilst living in Brazil, I had a maid who would wash and iron all my clothes. Despite her adorable nature, on more than one occasion my clothes came back to me somewhat "different" to how they'd gone out. One shirt, for example, came back with a huge hole in the collar; she claimed a wild animal had broken into the house, some kind of bird, she hypothesised, with a penchant for designer clothes. Luckily for me, she told me, she'd heard a commotion and interrupted the beast in the midst of his wild frenzy, taking a broom to it and chasing it from the apartment.

It was an old shirt and I didn't care much for it, but this one I do care about. One morning, she came to the breakfast table clutching my favourite white Lacoste shirt. "Mr. Zé Pequeno," she enquired, innocently, "The what have you been making in this shirt? Looks like you did to spill something on it." I looked, and to my horror, saw a faint yellow stain which had taken form across the front and the short sleeves. I wondered what I had been eating and, rather more puzzlingly, HOW I'd been eating, to get such stains in such strange places.

It's a very thin, almost transparent, white cotton shirt. I realised it had been burnt when I looked at the iron settings and nothing I have done, none of the old tricks such as vinegar etc., have worked.

What can I do, Metafilter, to get my favourite shirt back?

Hiding burn marks in laminate countertop?

How should I treat burn marks in a bathroom laminate counter top so that my corporate landlord doesn't ding me? Any advice before I start into it with sandpaper, chisels and paint? My internet research suggests replacing the counter top entirely, as laminate can't be easily repaired. However, I don't need it perfect, I just need it to be not obvious to the corporate employee that walks through when surveying the apartment.

I've got my "normal wear and tear" arguments ready to go. I'm pretty sure I understand the legal, ethical, and interpersonal ramifications of my situation. I'm really after handyman advice.

Can I salvage my freezer-burned chicken?

Can severely freezer-burned chicken be "rescued"? I understand the basics of how freezer burn works, and realize that the outside of my chicken breasts are now dried out. I also know from experience that if I grill them up, they'll be tough, dry, and generally not worth eating.

What if I cooked them in a crock pot with lots of broth? Would that rehydrate the chicken and make it good to eat again? What about in a stew? Or should I just cut my losses and pick up another bag 'o chicken?

Does anyone have experience with this or easy recipes they can recommend? (The easier to make, the better!)

My eyes, the burning!

Tricks for sanitizing hands after handling very spicy peppers? I'm not a pussy about spice. I can handle it. But we have some thermonuclear habaneros growing in the garden, and I chopped one today. I used some plastic wrap between it and my hand. The infernal oil penetrated or got around that. I kept my pinky elevated so at least one digit would be safe to, you know, scratch with. I washed my hands repeatedly.

I just carefully scratched near my eye with said pinky and it burns. Oh, my eyes, the burning!

Since the habanero plant is quite productive, this problem is going to repeat. I need a way to get the habanero fire-juice off me.

Skin Cancer Here I Come

Elite tips on avoiding sunburns that go beyond the standard online guides about staying out of the sun during the middle of the day and finding a high SPF sunblock for a light-skinned person about to embark on 3 weeks of way-too-much sun. I'm the stereotypical "never tans always burns" light-skinned dude and I'm heading off to a 3 week summer camp. Turns out I can't see my dermatologist before I go, so I turn to askmefi for any super-duper sunblocking tips. I've read the three previous threads on ask (here, here, and here) and I have plenty of good tips on specific brands, but I am looking for other advice.

I'm open for any general tips on how to make it through the next 3 weeks, and some of my specific questions are:
1) If (or more likely, when) I get burned, is there anything I can do after to help prevent future skin cancer? Is there some after-lotion or other methods I can use to help mitigate any damage that might lead to cancer down the line?
2) What is the best way to be applying and re-applying throughout the day? If I'm sweating and slimy should I wipe all the old gunk off first, or just slather more on over it? Is it better to start with a rub on lotion and then switch to a spray on for a second coat or stick with the same brand?
3) Finally, any advice or anecdotes from similarly light-skinned folks who have had to endure weeks of overpowering sun about how they survived would be helpful.

Thanks!

What shall I do to bring my dentist to a small court for his negligence, and for how much?

What shall I do to bring my dentist to a small court for his negligence, and for how much? I got a chemical burn to my face, about the size of a quarter, due to the negligence of my dentist. To make the long story short, it started two days ago when I went to have some filling work done for my teeth. The dentist accidentally mixed the water with the filling composite and smeared it onto my face. This triggered a rapid reaction with my skin. I was told at the time that I was probably allergic to the metal used for the high pressure tool piece. I did not buy his explanation and went to see my own doctor immediately. The next day I found out from the dentist that it was possibly an etch or acid burn by the composite. Today my own doctor confirmed me that it was indeed a chemical burn.

The burnt area is now dried up and is turning into a big dark scab. The burning sensation is going away, but the discomfort, as my doctor told me, will last for at least two weeks, not to mention that I have to show up like that at work everyday. According to my doctor, it’s unlikely to have scars afterwards in this case, but I’m still traumatized and scared to death with what if’s.

I’m furious that the dentist failed sending me to a medical clinic for immediate treatment upon my request. The funny part (not so funny) is that he treated me with Vaseline and recommended me to take Tylenol to ease the pain when this happened. I have been taking pictures of the burnt area everyday. I save all the notes from my doctor, visit receipts, and prescription. I want to see him at a small court, and want him to be responsible for his malpractice and negligence, and to cover all my medial expenses plus discomfort as the result. Shall I get a lawyer to represent me at this time or shall I settle this with the dentist by my own efforts first? If latter, what should I do first, and how much is reasonable to compensate my suffering, yet big enough for him to learn this lesson? Your inputs are greatly appreciated.

Why am I sun burned so badly?

I'm 50% Native American, and 50% Sicilian. Why am I sun burned so badly? I was out in the sun earlier today, used SPF 15 sunblock, and re-applied every 30 - 45 minutes. I was outside for less than 3 hours. I have never been severely sun burned in my life, and am 21 years old.

Spending nearly all of my days indoors (as a computer programmer), I thought a little natural light would be healthy. I haven't been out in the sun for an extended period of time for over a year (which gave me some nice dark color!).

I have no freckles, dark brown hair, and green eyes. I have a decent amount of curly, dark brown body hair. I typically get wonderful, healthy-looking tans, as if I've been restored to my natural skin color.

Today, I turned into a lobster. My lips are so dark I am considering seeking medical attention if they show no signs of improvement in the morning.

Oddly enough, my burned skin (practically my whole frontal-body) is not in much pain at all. I've been applying vinegar and aloe-vera every hour or so. I hope to purchase some cocoa butter tomorrow morning.

Why all of a sudden have I become so sensitive to the sun? Lack of protein in my recent diet maybe? If you have any suggestion for me, please shell them out :)

Also, I know the dangers of UV rays to my body. Please be constructive, as I am already burned, and telling me of my stupidity will do nothing more than hurt my character.
