Proven ways to transform a fledgling bully back into a nice kid?

A six year old in martial arts class has just started to do and say mean things. Small stuff so far: unprovoked shoving, telling other kids they're doing it wrong, mild name calling like "big baby" and "dumb shoes." Coach is starting to crack down on the behavior, but now the mean stuff is getting said softly so it isn't caught. Will this pass as an age-related blip? Are there ways to inspire the kid to be friendly again? [more inside]

Short story about a one-armed girl and a bully

My brother has been looking for this short story for a while -- help me to make his Christmas! Details: A bully is tormenting everyone in school. The main character is a one-armed girl, who is generally disliked. A boy that she likes decides to stand up for everyone one day, and fights the bully. The bully beats him up, but the boy keeps getting up no matter how many times he gets hit. The crowd starts to root for the boy, and the bully starts to feel shaken. The girl, worried about the boy, goes to tell the teacher what's happening, and the teacher breaks it up. The bully is restored to power and the boy calls the girl a mean name. [more inside]

I want to stand up for myself without freaking out.

I was treated like crud yesterday by the owner of a hobby store I frequent often. He's rude to his customers in general... basically a big bully. I didn't really stand up for myself yesterday since I have difficulty regulating my emotions - I have a very hard time asserting myself without going on tilt. I feel like I should stand up for myself in moments like this, but I rarely do since I don't want to cause a scene. How could I better handle myself in situations like the one from yesterday? Details inside. [more inside]

I will survive! But I'd like to keep my sanity, too.

Hostile, toxic workplace is causing me tons of stress. I can and will do my job well, conduct myself appropriately, and be courteous and pleasant as Mrs. Cleaver at a dinner party while I'm there. When I get home, I just fall apart. Being fake for 14 hours a day is exhausting, self-censoring every word that comes out of my mouth is a trial, and documenting in detail every mundane task I've performed is time-consuming. I need any advice, articles, or techniques to help me fake it through my days and stay sane! [more inside]

How to deal with jealousy and loathing; Sibling edition.

Can you give me some tips how to deal with an increasingly antagonistic brother? I'm a pretty soft-hearted slow-minded wuss who can't keep up with his clever snarky retorts or find a diplomatic way to rise above them and still resolve the issues which we are unfortunately linked together to. How, in preparation for a future when I will have to face up to him, can I learn to be stronger and ignore or deal with his attitude? Long winded whine inside. [more inside]

How to not let a mean family member (and people in general) get to me?

I have an extended family member that likes to poke fun at me - I consider the fun to be mean spirited, he doesn't. He doesn't let up, and it makes me dread family gatherings, because I know that I will get peppered with rude comments (about what I'm wearing, my sexuality, etc.). I have a hard time knowing what to say in response, and I find this to be the case when dealing with many people that I would consider to be "assholes". How to cope and not let myself get scared away from events by people like him? [more inside]

What anti-bullying measures work?

Today I saw the 2012 film “Bully” and thought it was very disturbing, so I decided to start an anti-bullying campaign on facebook in collaboration with parents of bullying-victims. To help me understand the subject further, my question is: If you were a bully at any given point and had a moment when you stopped, what made you stop? Was it something someone said?

Plan B

He is an old friend of mine, and I recently helped him out by getting him a role at our company where I am senior developer. Issue is buddy demonstrates a supremely arrogant streak, and loses his temper during discussions about architecture – when the approach under discussion is not his and tends to pout for the afternoon or storm off. This has come to a situation where I want to terminate his contract and will also probably terminate a very old friendship. Catharsis below the fold... [more inside]

Help me deal with a bully in an otherwise positive competitive sports environment.

I train in a martial art at a place with an active competitive team, which I am trying to join. The other person there who is my size/skill level and on the competitive team goes very hard with me in sparring and always leaves me injured/bruised to a greater degree than any other student. How can I work around this situation or have a mature and productive confrontation about it, given that I still want to compete so I cannot avoid working with this person 100%? [more inside]

Obligation to Recalcitrant Bully of Childhood?

Someone who I attended Middle School and High School with twenty plus years ago recently Google'd me to apologize for the way he treated me back then. I'm pretty much over all that school age bullying, what's my obligation to my former bully? How should I reply to his email? Or should I just forget it and move on?

How to deal with a bully from my childhood

I'm 30 now and very recently discovered an old school reunion site which brought up a couple of questions for me. When I was 13-15 I had a really nasty bully through the first part of high school (I'm in Australia). She made my life so freaking miserable and then, when we could leave school at 15 she left. My questions are as follows. Has anyone ever had the chance to confront their high school bully?? or (even though I know we're wonderful folk here on mefi), been confronted by someone they bullied?
I don't want to do anything but tell her that she made my life miserable and that it left lasting scars on my childhood.
PS She's not actually on the reunion site but I was toying with the idea of tracking her down.
