I am terrified of butterflies and moths, and have been since I've been a little kid. I do, interestingly, have a vague memory a traumatizing scene I witnessed on TV from when I was between the ages of 3 and 5, which I've attributed my phobia to. I've never been able to figure out the title of the work, so I'm hoping that MeFi might help. [more inside]
There are a bunch of weird little insects in my office. That photo isn't to scale - I'd say they're maybe an eighth of an inch/3 mm long, really tiny, and they like to congregate in little groups underneath various things on my desk. What are they? What do I do about them? [more inside]
The possum is gone now and hopefully won't be coming back. Is it reasonable to think the attic itself as well as the insulation in the attic is covered in urine and feces? If so, is it reasonable to expect the property management company or owner to clean up the attic and replace any/all of the insulation? [more inside]
My boyfriend has returned from a weekend in the woods with a significant chigger problem, which he says is "everywhere," eyebrow raise. How do I protect myself and how can he get some relief? I realize this is google-able but I can't bring myself to search for self-care reasons. [more inside]
My friend received a number of these bugs at her BBQ and she was wondering if anyone could identify them. Location: Berlin, today, during the European heatwave.
I planted milkweed this year to provide a rest stop for Monarchs, and today I noticed these yellow bugs on several of the plants. They appear to be aphids, and I'm not sure if I need to get rid of them.
Please help me understand if this is a bedbug. [more inside]
In the last two days I've noticed about a dozen tiny, almost microscopic bugs crawling around, into and out of my Macbook Air keys. I'm freaking out, not only because I'm worried they're going to destroy the laptop but because this could potentially be a bigger problem in the house. [more inside]
These little guys have just appeared in the last day or 3 in a corner of my wife's office. They're all over anything made of paper, or maybe that's just where they're most apparent.. Don't seem to bite. Smear a little on the paper when rubbed. Help? [more inside]
Can you help me identify these flat white bugs on my bananas? Google gives me a wide range of food pests, but nothing that looks like these critters. [more inside]
We have apocalypse level mosquitoes where I live and I am fed up with losing so much of our outdoor summer time. Screening in our deck is NOT an option, so we're looking for ways to create a detached screen room for not a ton of money. (ie. looking to spend less than 500$) [more inside]
The exterior of our house has been overrun by these furry little cocoons. I need help identifying the little rascals and also advice on how to KEEL them and keep them from coming back. [more inside]
I am in the UK. I get several itchy bites per night, mostly on the back of my neck. I also quite often see tiny flies meandering through the air in my flat. Are these flies likely to be biting me? Photo inside. [more inside]
Is a late June family vacation to Ephraim, WI and Door County bound to resemble a family of four battling black flies and other various and sundry killer insects? If so, how to cope? [more inside]
Please tell me your best bug repellent product/strategy for dealing with gnats? And mosquitos, but more generally small flying swarm insects. [more inside]
I found a weird looking bug in the bathroom that didn't kick the bucket when I nailed him with a magazine. What is this hardy creature? Link to pics inside. [more inside]
Still finding fleas on the animals a week after dosing them with Advantage. Is it time for the big guns? [more inside]
I'm moving in on Saturday. I've lived in dorms or apartments since leaving for college. It's a brand-new townhouse, built last year, owner has never moved in and we'll be the first renters. What sort of new-house things should I know? Bonus: How do I make sure the local flying dinosaur cockroaches don't move in too? I've always had a trash chute!
This is a 100% serious question. I pooped a dead bug. Little, tiny wings, maybe sort of mosquito-looking. It was definitely my poop on the sort of outside of a piece of poo. Just one bug, just one tiny poop - I was constipated. What does this mean? How did it get in there? Should I do anything about it?
About a week ago, I noticed a dozen small dots moving on the wall of my shower. When I say small, I mean borderline microscopic. I caught one on some Scotch tape and filmed it under ~30x magnification. Please help identify. I've had a few itchy bumps, and surely this is the cause. How do I get rid of them? Link to video. I've seen them all summer this Seattle (eastside), in large quantities. [more inside]
I typically carry my iPhone in my pants pocket and not infrequently take it out to find that it has successfully bypassed the four digit lock code needed to wake it up, activated an app, and successfully given itself several meaningless - but potentially consequential - commands. I can think of at least two reasons why this should not be possible, but it happens on average a couple times a week. What the hell is going on? [more inside]
My, very expensive, new apartment has something management calls box bugs and small, centipede-like black bugs. I don't know the name of this second type, they might be the young? Management has promised to call Terminex but they are adamant this isn't roaches and that as it gets colder, they'll disappear. [more inside]
Hi All, so long story my mom is moving in one month, to a house! And her apartment has bed bugs. She is already depressed-low mood, low energy and anxious. She has bed bugs. Please let me know what I can tell her to do that is 1.easy, 2. low on chemical exposure- thanks! this is breaking my heart, she is crying and feeling helpless and I am so far away.
My warehouse space is infested with bed bugs and, it turns out, they are just the worst. [more inside]
I have some kind of seasonal bug bites and it's freaking me out and driving me crazy. What is going on!? [more inside]
Please help me identify this bug: black, 1 cm long, head maybe 2 mm wide tapering down to a very thin tail, antenna-less, no visible legs (appears to slither), moves quickly (and therefore tough to kill), found almost exclusively in the bathroom. [more inside]
Here is a picture of them. Things we know: no one has gotten bites from them, they are always dead or dying when we find them, seems like there are more of them now that the weather is getting warmer, seem to be found near the walls although no obvious holes (we recently got new windows and doors and skirting). What are they and how do we get rid of them because they are grossing me out.
I don't have a cockroach problem in my apartment exactly, but there are cockroaches outside and I want to keep them far enough away from the door that they don't periodically follow me inside. Difficultly level: Please don't kill my cat in the process. [more inside]
I'm trying to remember as many notable instances of bugs in books (and film and other media) as possible--help me compile a creepy-crawly compendium, please? [more inside]
Freaking out that I might have bedbugs. (Gross) pictures inside. [more inside]
Just moved to New York City to a clean, small apartment. I've been here a month and in the past few days have found several, small, brown bugs. My first thought, roaches! But these guys are really, really slow and come out in the daylight a lot. I've had roaches before and you can't catch them with your hands, these guys I can just swoop down and snag. [more inside]
Found a little critter in the bedlinens at the Airbnb place where I'm staying. Entomologists of Mefi, tell me whether to freak out or not. (Please excuse any typos resulting from being on German keyboard.) [more inside]
How can I tell if an apartment building has pests (e.g. rodents or roaches)? Am I being unrealistic to hope to find a place that doesn't? [more inside]
I need help identifying these gross things that have appeared on my garage walls in the last week or so. They are grayish-brown, each about the size of a piece of orzo, and are stuck to the walls in my garage. I can spot about a dozen of them around the garage, but I don't know how many more might be hidden behind boxes, etc. I suspect it is some sort of poop or some sort of egg sac, both things that completely gross me out. The shape is pretty unique to all of them. I live in Southern California, with temps over the last few months ranging between 55 and 85F. Anyone have an idea what these might be? Pic inside. I'm wondering if you can recall a certain indie game about multiple generations of flying creatures peacefully growing flowers on an island. [more inside]
I think I saw a bed bug on a wall near my bed. What now? [more inside]
I need to attach a window screen to my fire escape window. Obviously I'd like it to break away when necessary (and also so I can water my herbs strapped to the bars on the upper half of the window). How can I do this most effectively and with materials I already have? It needs to cover both the top and bottom half of the window, and there's no existing screen frame. [more inside]
Worrying about long-term exposure to insecticides in my home - what to do now? [more inside]
My boyfriend walked into the bedroom to find this dude chilling on our comforter. What kind of beetle is this? Are we going to be eaten alive in our sleep? We live in Los Angeles, if that helps identify the beast.
My son is almost 10, and I'm trying to help him develop a love of reading. His requests were mysteries, fictional, and if they could feature anthropomorphic bugs, all the better. In my searching, I did come across Bug Muldoon, which he has devoured. I'd love to find more books that he might enjoy. He said that bugs weren't necessary, but he did very much enjoy them. He recently read all the Encyclopedia Brown novels, and I'm not sure where to go next for him. Are there other authors or series I should be looking at?
We moved into a new apartment a month and a half ago, and bought a used (like new) couch from an acquaintance two weeks ago. About a week ago, I started noticing a few (total of 3 or 4) of these on the floor in my bedroom. Today I saw one on the couch, and one on the living room floor. Any idea what they are? We've seen a few enormous cockroaches and a few small flies, but we're not itchy or rashy or anything. We're located in Philadelphia.
I believe that attractant-type insect traps like bug zappers, fly bags, CO2 traps et cetera work best if you put them in the vicinity but not too close - 15-20 feet. You want them to go "oooh, hey, what's that over there? Hey, everybody, this thing is over here!" My husband would wear a bug zapper around his neck like Flava Flav if that were feasible, on the principle that he wants all the bugs that come near him to go there instead. [more inside]
I have sort of a bozo question about insects and physics. Why is it that when I shoo a wingless insect from, say, my arm, said insects falls the human equivalent of many storeys to the ground and doesn't die? Physics was never my forte, but this seems to defy some basic law, does it not?
For years, my Brooklyn apartment never had a single roach. Now I'm finding huge, dead waterbug roaches all over. Why? [more inside]
