Can anyone identify this bug (imgur link, two photos, with tweezers for scale)? Found in a home in suburban Chicago, killed by this handsome fellow.
Came home to suddenly find these bugs all over the south wall over house. They are running along the ground and up the wall at least five feet. I don't even know what type of spray to get to get rid of them. [more inside]
There are a bunch of weird little insects in my office. That photo isn't to scale - I'd say they're maybe an eighth of an inch/3 mm long, really tiny, and they like to congregate in little groups underneath various things on my desk. What are they? What do I do about them? [more inside]
It doesn't seem to match the cicada or katydid noises I've found around YouTube. It's outside a suburban window - it is a "buzz" (it sounds a bit like a "hiss" in the recording, but was buzzier to my ears), with ~2.5 seconds of noise followed by a ~2 second pause. Listen here.
My long distance s.o. came down with a stomach bug a few weeks ago. As she deals with the subsequent G.I. troubles, she's been a little more sporadic with meals than usual. How do I encourage her to do a better job with her nutrition 1) when I am so far away and 2) without coming across as pushy? [more inside]
A very slightly raised roughly 1/4" circle redness/bruise with a teeny scab in the middle: what bit me? [more inside]
What is this bug? It's an inch-long caterpillar with a distinct red head, chewing holes in my rose leaves. I found a great picture online, but no really useful info. I'm in DC, and these things are destroying the foliage on my roses, as well as some of my vegetable plants. Most importantly, how do I get rid of them?
It's a bug, in my place, in February. Beyond that, I don't know. [more inside]

I have a severe insect phobia, and now the task of eradicating a silverfish infestation in my apartment is causing this phobia to take over my life. How can I regain a feeling of safety about sleeping in my own bed at night when I am now facing a seemingly endless stream of silverfish entering my room each day? Many more details below the fold. A small-ish spider (slightly bigger than 1cm in diameter including the legs, I think) has set up home in my living room. [more inside]
I hate bugs, and I have one that is in my space. Can the generous and awesome amateur (or professional) entomologists of MetaFilter help me identify it, and perhaps give me a general sense of how dangerous it might or might not be? [more inside]
Can you help me identify this larva? Pictures inside. [more inside]
Hello, I found this bug. Can you tell me what is it, please? [more inside]
First a plague of moths, now some kind of flying ...beetle? What is this miserable bug? [more inside]
Found a rather strange insect while doing night work in the forest at Mbam et Djerem National Park, Cameroon. Neither I nor anybody on my field team can even assign them to order. Does anybody out there in the Hive Mind know what this is? [more inside]
I was walking the halls of my dorm last night when I encountered this bug (one, two). It was about 2" long and intimidating enough that my friend and I looked a lot like this kid while we were trying to catch it. We eventually managed set it free outside, but we'd really like to know what exactly we let loose into the world. We're in southern California. Any ideas? Thanks!
Late Friday/early Saturday I was up at midnight being sick to my stomach (the #2 way). After that I took some Rx anti-nausea meds and tried to go back to sleep. At around 5 am I threw up (which, as an emetephobic is a huge, scary deal for me). So at 5am I took a Xanax, 2 Pepto pills and another anti nausea pill). I slept on and off (only waking up when my boyfriend gave me sips of water). [more inside]
So, I have a series of worksheets in an Excel file that I routinely save to web (single web page format) so that colleagues can access the information on an intranet. Since our company upgraded to Office 2010 these worksheets have begun accumulating multiple copies of any charts located on these sheets (superimposed on the original) - these duplications are in both chart and image form. About ten years ago I signed up for gmail very early during beta when people were selling invites for up to 3 and 4 figures and lucked out on a very early, short email address. (See profile.) And it's not cool. Not only do I get a lot of spam but I get a lot of misdirected email. I've seen receipts, bank statements, tax returns, boobies, dozens or hundreds of pictures of different families, newborns, weddings, new cars, old cars, flight reservations, money wire recepits. And this isn't good, and I wonder about my liability, and I wonder about these known brands or services that don't include a button for "This is not my account or data." or any email validation step at all. Last night I was checking WeatherBug, the iphone app I use for weather, and it said the expected low for the night would be 25. It was also telling me that the current temperature was 18. In the forecast for today, it predicted a high temperature of 42. Great! Snow melt! So I checked the hour-by-hour forecast to see when it would hit that high, and it didn't show anything higher than 35. This sort of thing happens a lot, and it offends the nerd in me. So: can other apps do better, or do they all just feed off the same NOAA data? [more inside]
I have an insect cabinet that I need to transport from North Carolina to Georgia, and then from Georgia to Nevada. How do I do this without destroying all the beautiful fragile things within? [more inside]
My hot pepper plant has gross little bugs on the undersides of some of its leaves since I brought it indoors for the winter last week. Pic 1, Pic 2. I also have little fruit flies (or gnats?) that I would like to kill that live in my aloe, mint, and sage. That funnel trick everyone recommends killed some but not nearly all. What can I spray on the plant and soil to get rid of the bugs and larvae without poisoning myself (when I eat the peppers/herbs) or the plants?
What is this really, really stupid bug? [more inside]
I need to attach a window screen to my fire escape window. Obviously I'd like it to break away when necessary (and also so I can water my herbs strapped to the bars on the upper half of the window). How can I do this most effectively and with materials I already have? It needs to cover both the top and bottom half of the window, and there's no existing screen frame. [more inside]
Sometimes, usually after a nap, we find something that looks like insect bites on our kid's exposed skin. I tried looking at various insect bites pictures, but can't find a match. Do you happen to know what causes this [more inside]

I'm troubled by a mysterious bug on my MacBook Air. It manifests itself when I use Microsoft PowerPoint, but I believe it is a Mac-wide issue. It is extremely rare, impossible to reproduce on demand, and yet - when it strikes, it does so with a vengeance, and embarrasses me in front of a theater full of people. [more inside]
When I use Google Chrome to search for certain terms, the browser tab hangs. In this video, it hangs on "allahu akbar" and "osama bin laden". I have not been able to reproduce this issue using other browsers or benign terms (like "fluffy puppies"). What causes this behavior?
I keep finding this bug in my house. It's about the size of two or three poppyseeds, almost like a large poppyseed. It's dark brown or black with a chevron pattern on its back in a gray or beige color (from farther away the pattern just looks like stripes). Sometimes I find these bugs alive, sometimes not. They don't move fast at all. They love boxes, my bed, and the bathroom. (Perhaps related to the boxes is that I also often find striped beige carcasses in the boxes that are slightly bigger than this bug, which could be related to this bug, or not...) What is this bug? My many google searches have led to nothing...
Can you help me figure out what these small, black-and-red winged bugs in my house are, and whether they are something I should be concerned about? [more inside]

I have a Dell laptop with Windows 7 32-bit on it and I'm having the weirdest issue with it. The "Devices and Printers" control panel window hangs every time I open it. It gets to about 90% of the way, according to the progress bar, and then stops. I can manage my printers using the Admin tools but everything else is unreachable. Is there any way to fix this short of a Windows re-install? This is a work laptop and I'd rather not have to go through our IT service department since they'll nuke everything on it that wasn't there when I got it.
With the first real rain of the season. it is now time for BUGS TO DROP OUT OF MY CEILING! What are they? (pix inside) [more inside]

I was reading a library book when a bug crawled out. It was paper thin, and was moving incredibly slowly. My partner captured it and killed it, and then put it between two pieces of tape. We've looked online and, yep, probably a bedbug. What do we do now? Watchful vigilance? Fumigate our entire apartment (which may not be affordable at this time)? Somewhere in between? Details inside, if you want more... [more inside]
