Scooting Mefites: What do I need to know before and after buying a scooter? How do I keep it safe in my neighborhood where cars are relatively unsafe (Hyde Park, KC)? I'm looking at buying a Genuine Buddy. I've ridden neither a motorcycle nor a scooter. I'm attracted to Genuine's warranty, and the fact that I can have this paid off by the end of the year. I've beenn wanting a sccoter for years now, but had no real need. Now I'm carless and need to get around. I had my eye on a Bajaj Chetak, but those are now discontinued.

My neighborhood's not exactly rough, but it's known for car thefts. (Hyde Park, Kansas City for those in the area) This Worries me a bit with a vehicle that's so easy to steal. I rent, and have a parking space visible from my bedroom (offstreet).

So my big questions are should I take a motorcycle rider course? How do I keep this safe? When buying a new scooter is haggling common or is it MSRP all the way? What else do I need to know?

Calling all neuroscientists! Is there a word for the times when you see something but don't know that you've seen it? I was at Starbucks today and saw that there was a display of Buddy Holly CDs on the counter. I thought goddamn, that's why when I walked out of here yesterday I was singing "Peggy Sue" in my head. At the time I thought that I thought of the song randomly, but I know that I must have seen the CDs without knowing I saw them because this has happened to me before. I know the word "subconscious", but as far as I understand the term, it doesn't fit. (After all, I'm not driven by Buddy Holly drives, nor am I frightened of him such that I'd repress the the sight of him). Is there a term for this phenomenon, where you notice something enough to start a thought process, without actually noticing it?

Female Buddy Comedy Filter: Please help me shop for an 11-year-old girl who loves female slapstick comedy. My niece loves Lucy and Ethel. I just got her a couple of Laverne and Shirley DVD's, and she wouldn't get off the couch until she'd watched every episode. Twice. Since she's impossible to shop for otherwise (too old for dolls, too young for make-up), I'd love to help her build a collection of movie/TV DVDs that feature female buddies being silly/slapsticky. Barring the buddy thing, any silly, age-appropriate comediennes would be nice. I thought of Carol Burnett, but can you help me think of more?

AIM buddy statistics

A while ago, there was a useful website that would provide online/offline statistics for all your AIM buddies, so you could see when they were on most frequently. It had interesting graphs it could make as well. Does anyone know if this or another similar web app is still around?

Why are users automatically being added to my AIM buddy list?

Why are users automatically being added to my AIM buddy list? I have found "buddies" on my AIM buddy list that I do not know. I always wondered how they got there. Recently, a random person started chatting with me. I refreshed my buddy list (logged off and logged back on) and noticed they were now on my buddy list.

Therefore it seems that anyone I talk to automatically becomes my buddy? How do I change this setting?

I am using iChat with an AIM account.

Do Goal Buddies Work?

I've often read that the way writers can maintain their momentum is to get a 'goal buddy,' someone you'd meet with or talk to once a week so you can encourage each other and kick each other in the butt and give advice.

Have any of you done this? Has it worked for you? What was the secret to staying on topic and staying motivated/focused instead of getting distracted and talking about gossip/family or general complaining?

He's looking for a cuddle buddy

Kind of a basic, dumb question-Was he dropping a hint, or was it just a topic of conversation? I met with a friend of mine (not really good friends, more acquaintances) to help him study for a test (we're both in college). When I met up with him, he asked if it was ok if we went to the bookstore, because he had lost his textbook. So we went, and then he called his roommate (whom I had never met before) and we all went for coffee.

We're talking, and the topic comes up of the roommates new girlfriend. My friend then starts talking about how he wants a girlfriend, and how having just a cuddle buddy would be nice.

I am asking the hive mind because I don't pick up on hints, and I don't want to take something for more than it is. Seeing as he brought it up in front of his roommate, would that make it more of just a conversation topic, or should it be construed as a hint? If it's just conversation-great. If it's a hint, I was going to ask him if he wanted to get together and watch a DVD or something...you know, just kind of indicate interest without being overbearing or whatever.

I wouldn't mind hanging out with him anyway, but I don't want to make things weird since the majority of our association at this time is my helping him with a class. A couple things which may or may not be helpful:

- when I mentioned that I was going to get together (just hang out) with a mutual friend of ours (someone that I am closer with than him), it seemed like he acted a little jealous. We actually ran in to this mutual friend, and again, i thought i saw a hint of the green-eyed monster (he knows that i'm close with this guy, but I think that he is unsure of the nature of our relationship-strictly platonic, he has a gf-but he is uber-hot!)

-when we were out for coffee, I mentioned that I thought that he had a thing for this other girl that we both know (again acquaintance-like). He seemed surprised and said that he was going to be more aware of how he acted, because he wasn't interested in her.

Just want people's opinions. I like him, and wouldn't mind a relationship of some sort, including cuddle bud, with him. I don't want to make assumptions and act, because I don't want to embarrass either of us, and don't want things to be awkward. But I don't want to miss an opportunity because I am so obtuse about these sort of things. Thanks in advance for any input!
