Where can I find a jersey like Charlie Brown's? I've been searching for a jersey like the one Charlie Brown wears for years now. I've seen a few t-shirts out there, but I want one that's closer to what he wears. I'm looking for something that's closer to a rugby shirt with the zig zag that goes all the way around the shirt.
UK Politics

How can I get more involved in UK politics? All the US election furore has really triggered an interest in politics. However, I'm not a USian. So what's the best way for me to get involved in UK politics? I'm not necessarily looking to join/be active for a party - I just want to be more informed and active beyond what I read in the papers etc. on a general level. I might particularly enjoy anything dealing with the intersection of law and politics.

Can anyone identify this piece of classical music which is featured in this video clip, it appears at the beginning and at 4:54.
Where does a visitor park at Brown at night?

So I'm going to the Death Cab for Cutie concert in Providence tonight, coming from Boston. It turns out that renting a car and driving is cheaper than seeing the act in Boston due to ridiculous fees. However, the concert's been moved to the Brown University campus.

For those who know the campus well--how easy is it to find parking after 5 near Meeham Auditorium? Will it be cheaper/easier to get street parking? Any secretly perfect parking spots? (and so on!) Google Satellite view shows a parking lot right in front of the place, but if it's not public I'd like to avoid circling for parking in a relatively unfamiliar place.

Thanks!

Help me find "mid-century dark brown" paint

I'm a fan of mid-century modern design. We've just bought an apartment in a building from that era (1961), and want to furnish it appropriately. We've got some vintage stuff we've collected over the years, and have bought some new stuff from Ikea and elsewhere that fits the bill. I'm also planning to build or modify some simple items (shelves, an entertainment center) in mid-century style -- and here's where I've run into a major problem: I can't seem to find paint in that very dark, almost-black brown that is so characteristic of the period. Any suggestions? I've looked at the paint chips on offer from half a dozen different manufacturers, at various hardware stores, and nothing quite captured it. As this blogger (who faced the same dilemma) put it, "I was hoping for a slightly darker, more bitter brown, something that really embodied the color 'expresso' [sic]".

It does seem to me that "mid-century dark brown" has a "bitter" quality to it -- undertones of black and green, perhaps? -- that make it very different from even the darkest brown colors of paint I've seen on offer these days (which tend to be orangey).

With the growing interest in this style, I'm surprised this kind of color is not more widely available. Can anyone recommend a specific brand and color of paint that fits the bill? Or does anyone have experience mixing other paint colors to get something like this?

Can my tulip plant be saved? How?

The leaf tips are turning brown. Are my tulip plants dying? I got a few bulbs in a small planter for Christmas. In short order, some stems (stalks?) emerged from the soil. They were green and robust.

Somewhere along the way, the growth decelerated, and the ends of the stalks turned brown. I (foolishly, perhaps) replanted them in a larger pot with some fresh soil. I may have damaged the root structure a bit when I transplanted the bulbs, but I don't believe I did a whole lot of damage. Either way, the browning has continued. As it stands, I have three or four reedish six-inch sprouts, two string-ish six-inch sprouts, and a handful of shorter reedish sprouts emerging from the soil. The long reeds have gone brown at the top, sthe short reeds and strings have wilted a fair bit.

Some resources say to trim the brown, some say to give more water, some say to keep the brown, some say to give less water, some say to give more light, et cetera.

So, I guess my question is:
1. What should I do?
And my other questions are:
2. Can I keep it outside when the nights are near-freezing?
3. Is there a reliable web resource for plant care?

What is the low-down on brown ink tattoos?

I am planning an extensive tattoo and would like to have it done in brown ink. I have seen a few that look beautiful but the tattoo artist I have chosen is advising me against it as he said it will not fade out well (he says it will degrade fairly quickly and fade unevenly). I'm in a quandry because I'm not crazy about black tattoos. Does anyone have personal experience with this? I haven't been able to find much online about it. Here is an example of what I like.

She'd have such a lovely face, except...

SkinFilter: What skin care regimen would help my oily, zit-prone face? Are there EFFECTIVE lighteners that aren't hydroquinone to get rid of old brown marks? I'm caramel-y colored. I get zittified regularly. These zits, while small and relatively few in number, are an angry red and are painful, which is why I have picked at them. Bad call. My face is covered with dark brown marks (they're not exactly scars) from that and also from tweezing out stray coarse hairs before they were fully erupted.

I'm still not sure what products to use to care for my skin, and I've gone through dozens over the years. Right now I'm using Basis to wash 2x a day, but no moisturizing and no toner since I don't know what to use and don't want to make things worse. I feel the many, many little unseen pimples and I know that in a few days some of them will burst out like an old moonshiner chasing off the ATF. I used a prescribed course of 4% hydroquinone in the past, but the oil base just caused more zits, which I picked and created more dark brown marks. I despair looking in the mirror. I live in NYC, so I'd also be interested in any recs for a dermatologist who specializes in skin of color.

Yes, I've stopped picking at my face.

Asia travel ideas for 18 yr old karate lover?

Can anyone recommend any martial arts learning opportunities (camps, workshops, lessons, etc) in Asia that an 18 year old would enjoy? My nephew in the US is a karate brown belt and he would like to travel to Asia when he graduates from high school this year. I am trying to help him find some interesting travel opportunities which relate to karate. He loves karate and has been searching for something to do in Japan or India for Summer 2008 but we haven't found anything yet. Thanks for any tips.

Visiting Brown, Amherst and Wesleyan: what to do, what to see, where to go

I'm visiting Brown, Amherst, and Wesleyan next week. I'm about to start my senior year of high school. What should I do in my limited time at these colleges that will give me the best idea of what it's like to go to them? I've seen this thread and it's very useful, especially for general advice on what to do when you visit a college, but I'd really appreciate advice specific to the schools I'm visiting. I'm visiting these three schools blitz style, three schools in about as many days, so I need to be economical.

I'll have some wandering around the campus time and I plan to take the campus tours, but what I really want are suggestions of places to eat or visit around the colleges, anything that will help me see what life would be like as a student there. Not that I'll resent general college visiting, college applying, college anything advice because I'm starting to develop a baseline level of mild panic about the whole business.

What does Doc Brown really mean in this back to the future II scene?

What exactly did Doc Brown mean in this Back to the Future II clip? For those of you who can't connect to the clip below, here's the dialog from the original script (slightly different from how it appeared in the movie).

DOC: First you're gonna have to get out and change clothes.
MARTY: Doc, it's pouring rain.
DOC: Oh, right... (Checks his watch) Wait 3 more seconds.
(Rain stops, sun comes out)
DOC: Right on the tick. Too bad the Post Office isn't as efficient as the weather service.
< !-- #i9ix4n2urd6lu5g5o3nkskee7p91v1scnvn5v3edu{width:320px;height:256px;border:none;margin:0px;} -->Dailymotion blogged video

Does he mean

1. In the future the weather is predicted down to the minute...

or

2. Is he implying that the national weather service can control the weather?

I always believed it was #2, however, wikipedia and all the other sites take it for granted that it's #1.

If its #1, I don't know how you can reconcile his use of the word "efficient" as a description of a prediction. Wouldn't accurate make more sense?</>

Please identify char/species of SW Ep3 plushy from BK

What Star Wars Episode III character/species is this Burger King promotional plushie? A cow-orker recently gave me a little plush fellow who now serves as my laptop carrying case guardian whilst hiding in one of the pockets. However, I have no clue what character/species he/it is. And where is he in the movie and what does he do?

He's pictured here (click on image underneath big BK logo in the main article area). He's on the back row, next to end on the right, between the Jawa and the snow monster on the end. Brown with blue eyes and fangs, and what appear to be either long floppy ears that are sewn into his jaw line or maybe really big sideburns. After comparison to the snow monster, could his head protrusions be horns?

Also appears there on the 2nd grouping down, on the back row on the far left.

What college should I transfer to?

Where should I go to college? This past year I was a freshman at the George Washington University. I decided I wanted to transfer because, as a fellow transfer student put it, I was "overwhelmed by the emphasis on partying and underwhelmed by the academics." I also grew up on the DC area (Silver Spring), so I felt too close to home.

Long story short, I applied to a few places and recently got some acceptance letters. So now I have to decide...Brown or University of Chicago?

I like Chicago because of its nerdy reputation, and when I visited all the people seemed really interesting and nice. I like the campus, and the city. The only cons as far as I can see it are the Core (=lots of required classes) and the distance from home. It seems like there is a good chance that I could get a single -- it seems like at least half of their housing options are single rooms. I had a single this year and felt like it was a godsend, so this would be a big plus for me.

Brown, on the other hand, has no required classes outside of one's major. I like the campus just as much as Chicago's, although I like Chicago better than Providence as a city. My mom went there, and loved it. However, overall I have heard bad things about housing -- and I don't think there is any chance of getting a single. Also, I don't know anyone there right now (unlike at Chicago), so I don't really have a feel for what the people are like there.

About me: I'm fairly shy, nerdy and geeky. The whole "party scene" (clubbing, drinking, whatever) is not my thing. I'd rather curl up with a good book or go out to eat and watch a movie with a friend. I'm not sure what I want to major in yet, but I am leaning towards Philosophy. At GWU I was involved with the radio station -- but both places have radio stations, so that doesn't really help me.

Does anyone out there in Metafilter have any advice? Any alumni out there? I need to decide by June 1.

How can I learn to like brown rice?

I have never liked the taste of brown rice, but I would like to try to develop a taste for it, since it is so good for you. Is there something that I can add to the rice to make it taste different (and possibly better?) Other suggestions for cooking or preparing the rice, besides the standard are appreciated.
