Ever since spring weather arrived in Brooklyn, there's been a single large bee patrolling my 3rd floor balcony. (1) What's the deal with this bee - where can I read more about its lifestyle? And (2) can I gently discourage it and its kind from hanging out and buzzing around my head when I want to sit out in the sun? It mostly ignores me when I'm out there, but I feel watched the whole time. [more inside]
We've been looking to purchase apartments with a broker based in Washington Heights, starting in upper Manhattan, but have now shifted to southern Brooklyn. In the neighborhood that we're focusing on now one brokerage seems to list 75% of the apartments for sale. Are we putting ourselves at a disadvantage because we're 1 - not using a broker from the area (though our broker is very nice and has been very helpful 2 - not just going direct to the local brokerage and asking them to represent us (even if they're the listing agents on a property)? I'm a new bourbon collector and I'm wondering what stores in Brooklyn and NYC have the widest and best selections? Also, while I'm at it, what are some of your favorite bottles? But more importantly, where can I buy them locally?
Looking for more housing/rooming sites to post to in NYC! [more inside]

I'll be away from my apartment in Brooklyn for 3 months for work. Subletting isn't an option, so my apartment will be empty that entire time. What steps and precautions should I take to ensure that things are safe and as cost-effective as possible while I'm away? [more inside]
After 6 years, I'd like to get back into playing drums. I don't currently have a kit and I live in a small walk-up in South Park Slope. Is there anywhere nearby or accessible that I can go to a few times a week to play? Monthly fee would be ideal, but I'd be fine with paying a reasonable hourly rate. [more inside]
Seeking recommendations for great food, bars, and any must-see sights in Brooklyn, NY. This is for a visit starting tomorrow. [more inside]
In 2010, coffeeshops and bookstores (etc.) gave away (for free) cool folded local maps on good, thick paper filled with tips for alterno/artisanal lesser-known shops/restaurants/cafes/bars. The drawing, production, and recommendations were all surprisingly good. There were editions for Chicago, Brooklyn, and, likely, elsewhere. I'm trying to figure out who made them, and whether they're still available. Help?

In the last month, I've noticed a lot of people bringing their pet dogs on the train with no bag? Has anyone else noticed if MTA has been more relaxed about this recently? This last gal strolled her black lab across the platform at Morgan Ave L in front of employees with no repercussions. Does MTA really care enough to ticket anymore? [more inside]
There are kittens in the yard! Very tiny, very cute, very stumbly kittens. Unfortunately, they cannot stay where they are. Looking for help in rehoming them in NYC. [more inside]
I run a city-wide trivia company that's been growing pretty quickly in the last few months. It's a business that requires a lot of printed materials (answer sheets, handout rounds, prize certificates, promotional posters, that sort of thing), and we could use a regular, friendly place that won't gouge us. We are looking into buying a single family or multi-family house in NYC within easy commuting distance to midtown. Budget is $1 million to maybe $1.2 million. We currently live in Williamsburg and are priced out, otherwise it would be the perfect neighborhood. Astoria Queens seems like a great option, and Jersey City has even nicer houses but I know less about the area. And are there neighborhoods we are overlooking? Longer criteria list inside. A little while back I stumbled upon a detective novel (Losers Live Longer) that takes place in 2009 NYC and utilizes actual city streets, restaurants, bars, etc. The writing was pretty average, but the book kept me constantly aware of the protagonist's location (oftentimes cross-streets). The real-world geography of areas I knew well really sucked me into the world and engaged me on another level than the narrative alone. Are there any other good detective or mystery novels that use post-2000s (or, better yet, post-2010) New York accurately? [more inside]
I need a new doctor in Brooklyn or Manhattan. Can you recommend one? [more inside]
So, my boyfriend of six months and I are heading to NYC tonight and staying 'til Sunday. I have a up against a wall with an approaching work deadline and because of my own poor planning will need to do a little bit of chipping-away-at-it while we're there. I need to carve out three or four 3/4-hour (ish) focused working sessions during our trip, and I wanted to ask the hive mind if anyone familiar with the city could suggest any non-awful ways to handle this. Light flurries inside... [more inside]

I have a dog, and the vet I take him to is okay. She's nice, I'm sure she's competent, but she's not the best communicator, and for some reason I don't have absolute confidence in her. My dog has a heart issue, and I'm going to want a really good vet as he gets older. Any recommendations? I'm in Park Slope, but would go elsewhere for someone great.
We're thinking seriously about buying a place in Manhattan (and possibly Brooklyn). We have a fairly unique split search (one strand of which is focused on looking for a place that will lower our costs, and the other strand of which is focused on finding a place that might increase our costs a little bit). We need recommendations for honest, intelligent, and very capable real estate agents to help. [more inside]

What are the dates that the Myrtle-Chambers Street Line of the BMT traveled over the Brooklyn Bridge?
My wife & I are playing in a charity scrabble tournament this weekend, called "Scrabble for Cheaters." Basically, players can "buy cheats" based on how much money they raised, and one of the cheats is to use a word from any other language. If anyone out there has a decent knowledge of Klingon and also Scrabble strategy, could you give us some pointers on Klingon words that are seven letters or fewer, and potentially high scoring for Scrabble? Thanks!
My gal and are buying a used Jeep Cherokee. We live in Brooklyn and want to put our minds at ease that this is a decent buy for what we're looking for. Plenty of details within; the short version is: what do we ask the mechanic to check before we commit to buying, and what are the next steps with insurance, DMV, etc.? [more inside]
I'll be in Brooklyn next week for work staying at the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott and I'm looking for a great local place to get a slice. This is the one food I crave the most and I just can't find any great pizza here in Central Florida. So please help me out and tell me where to get a great slice! Not just classic NYC style either, I'm open to any style.

Any ideas for a Brooklyn (or Manhattan, I guess) restaurant that can host a wedding of appx 75? Something warm and intimate, like Frankies (too small) or Aurora (hello $20K!). Nothing too **fancy** (as my Aunt Frances says). No venues or spaces or lofts or halls. Just a restaurant :)
Our apartment in New York is rent stabilized and we love the neighborhood it's in. I was very, very lucky to find this place back back when I was single. But in April we are moving to London temporarily (maybe for two years?) because of a job my wife has taken. The dream scenario is that we could leave our furniture, find someone we trust to sublease to, and have the option to come back in two years. Or if things go terribly in London we could come back earlier. But there's a complicating factor and I don't even know if the rules would allow us to sublease for very long. Details below. Anyone have a good dermatologist in Brooklyn/lower Manhattan who takes GHI?
I am a free-lance bookkeeper seeking new clients. I would like to meet prospects at a Brooklyn restaurant. Ideally it would be moderately priced, available for lunch or dinner, quiet, well-lit and have wi-fi access. Anything that has 4 out of those 5 would be super, and anyplace with all of them is superb.
We have Nets tickets for this Saturday at Barclays Center but may want to scoot a bit early to catch the end of Eagles/Saints if possible. Looking for a nearby place (walking distance) that's not too crazy (two 14yo boys with us) and will be open to putting that game on a TV if it's not on.
