The Mr and I would like to take a 3-5 day road trip out of Seattle this December/January, including going somewhere that it would be fun to celebrate New Year's Eve. We are not interested in skiing or winter sports. We are interested in food, wine, and cultural events. [more inside]
This is hypothetical. I have allowed somebody to drive my car (in British Columbia, Canada) who I know does not have valid driver's license. She has a crash in which somebody else is badly hurt. She (the uninsured driver) does not have the money to pay the damages. How liable am I for these damages, and will my ICBC insurance cover them? If my insurance doesn't cover these damages and they are extreme, are all my assets endangered? (ie: worst case scenario, could I lose my home?)
What are the current regulations for or against the use of less-than-10hp two stroke boat motors in British Columbia? Is their use currently permitted? [more inside]
We're planning to drive from Kelowna to Vancouver in the middle of September, and we'd like to take a scenic route and perhaps stay overnight somewhere in the middle. Problem: we're getting conflicting advice about which "scenic" route to take! [more inside]
Trying to work out what good options would be regarding not having to wait 6 months for a follow-up to a set of medical tests in Canada (British Columbia), which given my current condition, seems an unbearable delay. Not sure what my options are rather than paying to go private. [more inside]
When I was a kid I had a book about bigfoot that I read and re-read. I can't remember what it is called or anything like that but I am clinging to the faintest hope that the AskMe hive mind can help me find it. [more inside]
I'm going to be up in Vancouver this weekend and want to shop for a new spring coat. Something trenchcoat style but not in black or beige - cool colors or prints/patterns would be better. Size 12 or M/L, between $100 and $200. The style constraints are that it should not be teenagery but not dowdy either - I like classic cuts but trendy colors and patterns. I already plan to check out The Bay.
We are tentatively planning a road trip this summer which would take us north to Vancouver Island, then we are thinking of working our way over to Nelson. (Then down, hopefully, to see some of the Channeled Scablands on the way back to Oregon. [more inside]
Asking for a distressed friend, Vancouver BC. Call her Laura. She's suffering from a long term chronic nerve pain issue which has recently gotten worse (the past year). She doesn't want a diagnosis from the community. What she needs is advice on how to get a diagnosis from a relevant doctor so that she can qualify for some kind of disability assistance. BC'ers - how do you calculate the rate of income tax you should be paying? After googling I'm coming across wildly different rates for brackets, as well as terms like 'average rate' and 'marginal rate' (what are these? The internet doesn't want to tell me!) I normally do my own taxes at home (UK) but am being driven round the bend trying to get the figures for this.
Where is the best place to stay in the Pacific Northwest for one month with easy access to (1) orca watching (2) day or overnight trips to Seattle, Vancouver, Victoria, Olympic Peninsula (3) nature. We want to spend the month of August 2014 to escape the heat of Austin. Cost is somewhat of an object but I will only camp in limited circumstances. Here are more details about what I am looking to find: [more inside]
I will be visiting Vancouver, BC for a week. Where should I eat that I might not find on TripAdvisor (or similar websites)? I won't have a car, and I will be staying here. I am open to all kinds of food (in fact, the more obscure the international cuisine, the better!).
In British Columbia - my mother has a tenant that regularly withholds rent for non-essential repairs (shower heads, faucets) and then charges us exuberant amounts of money for service. My mother asked me to speak with her and I did. The tenant wants to take us to court now and I want to be prepared. How do I do this? [more inside]

A friend has just moved from mainland China to Vancouver, BC. Her English is pretty good, but not perfect (she speaks Mandarin). Her only work experience is in teaching. I'm at the other end of the country, in Ontario, and want to do what I can to help her integrate and find work, but am hindered by my location and complete lack of immigration experience/knowledge. What helpful advice, tips, and resources can you share with her?

The lady & I want to watch some whales in Victoria BC around Memorial day. We'd like to avoid cookie-cutter-corporate hotels. We want a funky mid-price (think $100/night or so) place to stay. When we travel around Washington/Oregon, we like to stay at McMenamins. Is there anything close to that in Victoria?

I am currently a philosophy student at the University of British Columbia (Canada). I've applied to transfer to the Institute of Philosophy at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven for their strong involvement with continental philosophy, and because I want to live in Europe. Will getting a Belgian degree significantly complicate things for me if I choose the pursue a graduate degree in North America? Will it be detrimental to getting in to a good school?
I remember a couple years ago that the U.S. was trying to get Canada to follow the American drinking age limit of 21, especially in British Colombia. So, if you go up with an American ID, it must say 21 instead of 19. Does anyone know the status of this law change or if it was well-accepted by Canadian governments?
A friend of mine is planning a trip to B.C. in September. She and her husband will be doing the "circle tour" in British Columbia which has them travelling north from Vancouver to Powell River, taking the ferry to Comox and then heading south on Vancouver Island to Victoria (with a detour over to Ucluelet for whale watching). Her agenda in Vancouver (spending time with party hardy Grandma-in-law and her much younger boyfriend) and in Sechelt (kayaking) is pretty well arranged. However, she'd be most appreciative of any suggestions for what to see and do and eat between Sechelt and Victoria. They do not have time to do detours to the Gulf Islands due to time and relative-visiting contraints.
I just realized that I get downright passionate about telling people how to have the best outdoor/hiking experience in the south half of BC/Alberta. I'm thinking this means I'd be happiest were I to get back into hiking. But I feel I've done it all here... does anyone have recommendations for truly stunning 3-5 day backpacking excursions? They don't necessarily require mountains: I've done some coastal hiking, and it was wonderful, too. Where in the world should I go?
