Thin brick over concrete in a California driveway apron?

I'm considering putting brick down in my driveway apron. It currently is covered by concrete. I live in Southern California. Is there any reason I shouldn't (professionally) install bricks over the concrete? Bonus question: what about installing thin bricks (1.5" thick)? We will be driving over the surface. [more inside]

Turn Galaxy S3 into a DumbPhone for my Daughter

I have a Galaxy S3 I'm upgrading this week, and want to be able to brick it so that my 10 year old daughter can use it for the basics (calls, texts, calculator, etc.) without all the extra Internet and games that will turn her into a zombie at school. I've seen the dumb phone app and similar, but they are all time limited. I want to brick the dang thing permanently. Any advice? Different OS? Ways to block she can't get around? A phone plan with no data? [more inside]

Insulating a double bricked house

Is it a bad idea to fill the air gap in between double brick walls? Our 100 year old house is in need of some insulation so we had a couple of companies give us a quote. One company recommended spraying Air Krete (a kind of foam insulation) in the gap between our double brick walls. The other company said this was a horrible idea and could damage our house! They said to rip out the plaster & lathe and install interior insulation. [more inside]

Anyone ever dealt with getting cracked brick house walls fixed?

My brick house has a number of cracks in its walls. We got the house inspected when we bought it, and the inspector said the cracks were worth taking care of, but weren't really serious. The cracks were repaired in the past, some of them repeatedly. Pics are here: [more inside]

cleaned brick planters with muriatic acid, got white film

I cleaned my brick planters with a strong solution of muriatic acid, parts worked will, but one major section turned white with a film. How do I remove the film? The advice I read is to use muriatic acid to remove the film, but that seems to be causing the film on this one section.

My particular taste and even more particular body type will probably eliminate a lot of options, but I hope you can point out the ones that are left. [more inside]

How much more secure are older low tech phones than the more modern ones

Are older phones or phones designed for poorer countries any less susceptible to spying than the latest Apple, Google or Android models? I've read about CEO's looking for the very old brick phones because since they don't have the sophisticated technology of the modern phones, they're harder to monitor or track. I understand the phones w/o apps are clearly more secure regarding third parties because they aren't sending personal data to companies. But what the government and everything else; voice, location via cell towers, SMS; the very basics.

What to do with thin brick construction debris.

I recently removed an interior wall covering of about a ton of thin ( and joist bending ) brick like this, or this, and now have sheets of plaster and/or broken brick and plaster. Is there any other use for it around a house or yard; I don't like throwing it away and I'd have to take it to a construction dumpster due to its weight. [more inside]

A skyscraper in Newark

I'd like to write a fictional short story about the construction of a skyscraper in Newark and an incident of corruption that threatens the structural integrity of the building (based loosely on the Citygroup Center incident. Note: I'm not saying this crisis was caused by corruption). I am seeking books, articles, photos and videos (especially), and general inspirational material on modern skyscraper construction and, particularly, any incidents similar to the Citygroup crisis. Additionally, anything worthwhile on the city of Newark (I've watched Brick City, which was the primary inspiration for the setting). Many thanks to all in advance!

Sealing Exposed Brick Wall

I have an exposed brick wall in my house (it was like that when I moved in). It's quite irregular, and a bit rough, so I'm not sure I really want to paint it. But I would like to prevent the dusting and flaking, without it looking too shiny. Has anyone out there done this? Is it a spray process, or applied with a brush? And some people warn the wall then can't 'breathe.' If anyone's done this I'd appreciate any tips.
