Help Choosing a Dog Breed

Help me choose a new dog. I've been looking at different breeds and have come up empty. Here's my list of things to consider. Please ask if there is more that you think is relevant.

We have kids from infant to 7.
We have 1 middle-aged cat.
We have a suitable yard that I don't want destroyed.
I love the size and look of border collies.
I love the look of irish setters.
I love the look of bassets and beagles.
Central Iowa, but dog would sleep indoors.
Exercise is a daily walk.
Simply trained; no complex tricks, just sit, stay, heel, fetch.

Help us identify our dog.

What kind of breed is our dog? We are confident that he is of Japanese origin based on his face and coloration, and we want to be the best parents we can be. Elway is about 50 lbs, quiet as a church-mouse and looks very much like a Shiba Inu, but larger and without the upturned tail. Shibas are generally no more than 40 lbs at the very largest. Elway, contrary to the common temperament of Shibas, is quite friendly (even excitable) around humans and other dogs. He is high-energy, a bit destructive and loves to dig. We have heard that Shibas are supposed to be good guard dogs, but ours would likely annoy an intruder to death with neediness rather than scare him.

The wife thinks that he is part German Shepard due to the coloration on his back, but I'm not so sure. The doggie DNA tests are out of our price range and we would rather not invest in a book merely to identify him (if possible). Help?

Miss Jenny has a voice like a linebacker.

What is she? I am the soon-to-be momma of a lovely mutt. Here are some pictures of Miss Jenny. She is very obedient due to extensive training from my fiancé, although she is incredibly alpha around most other dogs. She tends to treat smaller dogs like non-threats (like my Mr. Playdeaux). Bigger dogs she'll bark at loudly and might do a demonstrative snap or two without actually biting. Her favorite game is to play "defense" against another dog chasing a ball. She never actually wants the ball; she just runs alongside barking her head off, then trots back happily to do it all over again.

Also, we have recently learned she's not so great around small kids. I am hoping if we better understand what kind of dog she is, we can tailor our training to be most effective in teaching her that kids are people, not small animals to chase. What is she?

Please help identify my mixed puppies breed...

Please help identify my mixed puppies breed... Pictures inside Yes, another id my pups breed questions :). After getting hounded by this question everytime I walk the girl, I have come to the green for help.

Here is Anza:
pic1
pic2
pic3
pic4

The first 2 are at about 12 weeks old, the second 2 are at about 16 weeks old.

We know that the mother of the pup was a lab. 100%? Not sure, but we did see the rest of the puppies in the litter. 3of the six looked like standard yellow lab. 1 was spotted (we adopted) 1 looked like a rotty/lab, and one had longer hair like a golden.

Right now, at 5 months, she weighs about 30 lbs. The humane society told us to expect an 80 lbs dog at full grown. How likely is this? I have heard that at 5 months, she is 75% of her adult weight?

dude, what's my dog?

help my friends figure out what breed(s) their found dog is. my friends found their pup on the side of a road in south carolina. at 5 months, she is about 25 pounds. she has rottweiler coloring, but pinscher features, and a hound's bark. she isn't much of a sniffer, more of a digger. she's still a puppy, so it's hard to know how hyper she is, but she seems more mellow than my bf's basset hound at that age. ears are floppy, tail is curly.

any thoughts?

Long blond hair and beautiful blue eyes; what's her breed(s)?

Doggy folk, your best guess about this breed/mix, please? Photos: 1, 2, 3. She is two years old, weighs around 27 pounds, and is about 17 inches tall. I don't know much more than that. I haven't met the young lady yet, so I can't tell you much about temperament, etc., except she's supposed to be very sweet, loves the loving, not barky. This is a rescue dog, so there's no info on the mother or father. Those arresting blue eyes make me naturally suspect Siberian Husky, perhaps, somewhere in there... but I have no idea.

Can I find out my dog's breed(s)?

I heard that you can send a sample of your dog's DNA out to be tested to determine breed. I have a pound mutt who I would love to know the mix before she passes. Anyone know if such a service exists?

Rabbit breed?

We adopted a rabbit, and are really taken with him. We're not sure of his specific breed, or a close guess as to his heritage, besides that based on the ears that he's a lop of some sort. And it's possible or most likely that he's a mutt, but we're just curious, what breed(s) of rabbit is he? If not apparent from the photos, he has floppy ears, completely black fur except for greyish fur on the back of his head, and on the sides of what look like big mutton chops. He has long hair, but it's especially long on the top of his head, and is highly susceptible to static charge. For a point of reference, we were told he is about a year old.

Dogs for a cat person?

What dog breeds are most suitable for a "cat person"? In particular, the attributes of cats that appeal to me are their small size, lack of strong smells, quietness, tendency to shed less, small appetite, cleanliness, and calm temperament.

By contrast, dogs strike me as large, smelly, loud, hairy, hungry, dirty, and jumpy.

So, what dog breeds are the most 'cat-like'?

A few additional details: we won't be getting dogs for a long while yet; we'll probably get two dogs but only one ('mine') has to be cat-like; we'll only get dogs if we're living somewhere with ample space for running around (>1 acre of open space).
